10 Minutes to Doom | Invader Zim | Part 37

Okay listen.. I know I have a lot of wips currently but when I saw a post on Tumblr, that there is a project going on of recreating one of the unfinished episodes of Invader Zim, I couldn't resist.

But yeah, this video was again a very big challenge. It may be only 15 seconds long but I put a lot of work into it and that's why I hadn't been really actively working on my other projects (currently it's still the Hate Me animatic) for the last weeks but I will now continue with it!

Thank you! Haha yeah I really love painting the backgrounds since I started with art. They're just so calming to do! But for this video I spent a long time on them. I think for 2 weeks I just worked on them so I'm really happy you like them! :D

@@nameless095 Mhm. I.. wrote a few things haha I hope they can help you in a way! I would try to include a set light source that you can see in the picture and not just an imaginary one (example for imaginary one: saying light is coming from the upper right corner without drawing the source). For example, in this video it's the giant lava lamps that tell you how the light and the shadows have to be placed. Shading edges. I especially recommend adding them on the floor between tiles. It immediately changes a picture. The main thing when you add a background is that you want to add depths to a picture (I'm talking about the way I draw my backgrounds and what I think they should add to picture. Of course, I know that there are also flat backgrounds with their own aesthetic but I for my art I want the ones that add more layers to a picture) Speaking of depths; perspective. It sounds really scary but perspective in backgrounds is not too difficult actually. I would recommend looking up what "vanishing point perspective" is and just get a basic feeling for it and then test it out and go wild. Get a feeling for what slight changes in the placement of the lines can do and how easy it is to generate different feelings (of depth or even emotions. An angled background generates uncertainty and losing of control. In this video I tried a lot of different angles of the vp perspective). And.. you don't need to construct the whole vp perspective every time. I always just sketch mine. No overthinking of things. Adding textures. This could be personal taste, but I love it when my brushes have a slight grainy texture. In my opinion it makes a picture a little more interesting instead of the no texture (but again, there are so many amazing artists that can do it without). I also think that some brushes can give the backgrounds some details that you wouldn't be able to achieve without. For example, my starry brush that adds little dots is one of my favorite brushes. Because of that one, I'm able to create night skies or some small, interesting lighting effects (Here in this video I used the starry brush on the lava lamps) But yeah for my backgrounds I have created a lot of brushes with different textures. I also highly recommend drawing the background before the actual shading of the character because then the picture seems more uniform and you already have your light source for your character and know the color palette that you should use on your character because of the atmosphere lighting of the background. Color theory is something that immediately makes a background more pleasant to look at and is a lot of fun once you understand the basics. I again recommend just looking up what colors work well together. Since I sat down and really studied it, I feel like my pictures feel more intentional. For example, my favorite combination is purple and yellow (complementary contrast). In this video I tried staying in the same color family and used a combination of light blue and dark blue and in general tried only using colder colors. There are many more interesting combinations so again, highly recommend getting a feeling for it. Details. Probably personal taste again, but I love when there is a lot going on, on a picture. But even if you don't want to go overboard, adding small things like, for example in this video I added the screws in the wall, which you think, when you draw them, that people won't notice. But without these little details a background could feel empty and the character could look a little lost if you remove too many details. And then there are details like the wallplates. Adding them gives the picture a different feeling. If I hadn't added them, the room would look cleaner. Making the picture feel calmer. But I didn't want that, firstly because in IZ the backgrounds are crazy detailed and secondly because Dib is not feeling calm and is in panic, so I tried including that into the background. Making it feel hectic and as if the order and control is missing. But yeah things like that are things that you don't need or force onto every background. It's just something I noticed and picked up over the years and maybe it can help you :3 I personally see backgrounds as more than just.. backgrounds. They tell a lot about what is going on in the picture and are the frame of what you want to tell with your main part.

And I know this is a lot and probably a little overwhelming, but the most important thing is to not be scared and try out everything you're interested in. And sure, some pictures will not work because the interesting color combination you thought of.. actually looks really bad. Or the light source you set makes a horrible shadow onto your characters. I can't tell you how many times I need to make slight color changes during the making of a background or accept that the picture turned out weird. But with every picture you're learning something to either use again in future pictures or to not use again :3

This is really good! It's different from what you normally make but DAYUM! The background is done really nice and looks hyperrealistc. The hair has those small details where you drew those hair lines (I think, it's called that) And the goggles on the science-guy looks sooo good! They look all reflective and shiny! And I looove the fact that when he said "it's me, Zim" his teeth became sharp and pointy and he stroke a amazing pose! His eyes looked crazy and it's really attention to detail
