How much does a gauge swatch affect how much yarn is leftover for the actual project especially if you are blocking and washing/drying the swatch and can’t use that yarn for the project? Also, I have bought a lot of patterns and MANY designers do not use the CYC guidelines for sizing. Sometimes this is not revealed until after you purchase the pattern and find out the XXL it designed to fit a 40-42 bust and not the 48-50 you expected and therefore the size you thought you were buying is not included in the pattern since the pattern stops at XXL (40-42) and doesn’t have the size you need. So I take a lot of time reading the listing and emailing questions before I buy. I wish more designers included more information in the listing (including yarn size).

I always recommend having extra yarn if possible so you have enough for swatching as needed and also customization throughout the project. As far as the sizing, that should definitely be on the listing, but designing is very much a figure it out sort of thing, so some designers may just not know to list it there. If the information you need is not on the listing, just ask the designer for that info before you make the purchase. Most of us are happy to help. 😊

I would say usually there is a pattern, unless they are designing their own.

Sometimes when making items as a surprise gift we don’t have the convenience of trying on… I usually get flat measurements. Any other ideas? It seems a lot of your videos address trying on, but so often crocheters are giving souls and crochet items to gift them.

If you are making a garment for someone else, I'd definitely do my best to get their measurements, especially if you can't try it on them.
