I always either start the second row by putting the hook in the single stitch behind the two front stitches or putting the hook under the two front stitches for a smoother look to the next row depending on what I am making. I am 84 years old and have been crocheting since I was about 10 years old. I especially make doilies and have patterns that were my mother's and her mother's. I also knit and was taught that by my grandmother when I was pregnant with my first child so I could make my new baby sweaters. I am now knitting scrubbys with the scrubby yarn for my friends. To me, doing these things are very relaxing and enjoyable!

a great way to keep your project straight is to put a stitch marker in the first stitch of a row right after you start that row. When you get to the end of the row you will have the stitch marker from the prior row as your stopping spot. It also helps if the stitches are a bit tight to get your hook into that last stitch. Works as well if your are chaining up, when you chain your 3 chains put the stitch marker in that last chain.

I’ve been crocheting for about 6 years and I’ve never really understood which stitch I’m supposed to join in the round. Very helpful. My mother taught me to crochet as a teen, but never made anything more than a granny square. Then after several years I made beanies for my grandchildren and loved it!! They weren't perfect but I tried and gave up because my projects would lose their shape, twist, turn, etc. But the urge to start up again is always on my mind so I'm going to give it another shot after watching your tips! What a great video! I have been crocheting for about 8 years, and am self taught. I have always been confused when chaining and joining to make a circle. I definitely learned something new and will now have an easier time do that. Somehow I’ve made it work, but I have never really been happy with the results. Also the information on weaving in the ends was great. I have always felt people often gloss over that part, especially for someone who doesn’t know anyone in person that crochets to learn from.This is such a wonderful resource!

Those end. Yarns strands can really be ugly! Im 88 yrs tsught crohet by my gran kniiting by mum and crochet, and threading andxwatching others have picked up a lot of tips and many much better than was taught. Im enjoying it still id be completely lost if i didnt do either of them. I love doing both kniitng a csrdufan and a sweater, us a blanket on the go.when these are done not much on either left to do.then Im concentrating on making things for my first great grandchild due in April.. never get bored of making things. I predominantly make amigurumi, so the last tip is more "mileage may vary" for me. I often use bigger yarn and hooks than the original patterns call for, but that's because I WANT bigger end results. I will still follow the instructions rigorously! Awesome video!

Do a bunch of test squares and relax as you do them. It’s the same as when you learned to write as a kid, it’s starts out kind of messy and then gets better. I think I did about 20 test squares in all sorts of different stitches for practice. I unravelled the lot of them and reused the yarn so nothing was wasted. Enjoy the process, its fun.

Also, the section about weaving in ends is very important for a reason some don't know. If your pet swallows a piece of thread, it may cause a serious problem for them. My cat swallowed a thread about 2 inches long. My vet explained to me how serious that could be and may even result in surgery. That was an eye opener for me. I always thought the stomach acids would dissolve the thread. Not so. If the thread gets wrapped around the internal plumbing, surgery is called for. I have been much more careful since I learned that.

Your videos are invaluable to me!!! So much info to make my life easier. That said, Re using the right yarn and hook size fora pattern; I just LOVE mixing this up. I almost always use the wrong yarn for a pattern and it often means some ripping it out and it always means extra math and a lot of measuring as I go to find the right count 🤣. I almost always use the right hook size for the yarn, maybe one size up or down but crocheting with a hook that is too small is murder. Really I usually just make up my own pattens anyway. I’m just wondering, when you’re starting a row or round on a chain foundation, why you only grab the top (or single) loop of the chain stitch with your hook. That first row needs a little more stability. I always grab the top 2 loops. If anyone is wondering about the single loop left at the bottom, for an afghan, for example that is taken care of with the decorative border. I agree totally with your explanation of tension! Please everyone pay attention to this. 😊

I always pick up two, as well, it worries me when your cast on rows hang like garlands under my work, even if I’m going to put fringe on.

The problem with doing that is that then you only leave one thread as the base, which makes it more knobbly and it isn't a solid base for your piece, especially if you're going to add edging to your piece - then you're going to end up doing the edging with a single thread, which is less firm. If you pick up a single thread for the base and make sure not to stretch the chain, it leaves a row of chain stitches at the bottom of your piece, which is much prettier. That's why many people prefer to do their first row into the back bump of the foundation chain - the back bump is less weak than a side thread of the chain. Personally, I prefer to start with a single, half double or double crochet foundation chain, which is both stronger and helps you evaluate the true length of your piece much better from the word go.

She is teaching mostly beginner crocheheters and foundation sc or dc is not easy for a beginner. This is a very good tutorial for beginners and as for going under only one loop in the chain stitches, I also prefer the back bump, but the best teachers I've watched, when not using the back bump, all go under only one loop. In my opinion, I would say, do what works best for you, just be consistent. Thank you for this video. It was good to be reminded not to work into the loop before the joining when working in the round.

We also make hats for cancer patients that have lost their hair from chemo and radiation. We also donate variety of cards for the people to send a card to family and friends. We donate toiletries, socks dollar tree finds. I really feel blessed to help out this way. I am still in the early stage of learning to crochet. We also buy twin size blankets that have the blanket stitching on them. We crochet a border around them to personalize them. I had a navy blue blanket and used white yarn for first rows then I finished with red yarn. So pretty. As a beginner/intermediate crocheter, I learned so much from this video! When it comes to the piece you're working on getting wider at the top (or even narrower), you talked about adding/skipping stitches as being a culprit. One thing that I found with my own projects when I was first learning crochet is that I wasn't aware enough of keeping a consistent tension. So as my hands would tighten, my rows would shrink, whereas if I tried to ease the tension by loosening my fingers, my rows would inevitably start growing. You brought up the importance of maintaining consistent tension later in the vid, but I was so smitten by the pink hook you were using, I had to restart that section so that I could pay attention to what you were saying lol. I love the color and shape of it! If you ever happen to read this comment, I'd love it if you would respond and tell me what hook that is (24:30). Is it a Furl, or something similar? If it's a furl it's sadly out of my budget, but hey, a girl can dream! Thank you for a fantastic crochet tips video. I'm now a subscriber, and can't wait to watch more of your vids. Thanks again!

THANK YOU! I ALWAYS have trouble understanding where the 1st stitch & 2nd stitch are! You helped explain( visually & verbally) it so well! It’s hard to find any tutorials that u can see or understand, but your tutorial was perfect! If a new crocheted doesn’t understand this basic 1st step, it’s so hard to begin & it gets so frustrating... Also, sometimes I want to crochet into that little bump on the end( or beginning) of the chain... it kind of looks like a reg chain stitch, but I’ve learned to take my time & differentiate... Oh girl. You are really thorough and seemingly a sweet young lady. I just want to say, with all the respect that you sincerely deserve, that for me, as a beginner at crochet, that although the information that you have so kindly and thoughtfully presented here for us is undeniably of excellent quality and very practical, i would like suggest that you might break down into smaller pieces that are easier for a newbie (such as myself) to be able yo take in. Being so graciously offered such a vast wealth of skill and knowledge by someone as talented as yourself is more than a little overwhelming, although not unappreciated. I definately will be subscribing to your channelso that I can benefit from these videos that you take time out of your day to put together. I just very humbly request of you to consider some more short form videos. I hope im not coming off as overly demanding or ungrateful or hateful in any way, as neither of those things are my intentions. I have found the hook size indicated on a yarn skein very seldom works out. That is why doing the gauge the pattern gives is important.
