10 Money Traps that Keep You POOR

And how to avoid them...
Money traps are "Traps set out by society that consume all of your money and leave you with no money." When you are not intentional with your spending and do not recognize these traps, your money will disappear and you will need to make more money.
In this video I talk about, "10 Money Traps that Keep You Poor."
1. Not Managing Money Intentionally
We spend so much time trying to make money and when we finally get the money we spend it without thinking about how we should spend it. If you do not manage your money and budget, then your money will leave a lot quicker. You can avoid this trap simply by taking the time to budget and be more intentional with your spending.
2. Having an Unnecessarily High Standard of Living
There is no standard "Standard of Living," it varies from person to person. It is important to have a high standard of living; however, some people have an unnecessarily high standard of living. When you have an extremely high standard of living you money leaves a lot quicker. You can avoid this trap by defining what is important to you and adjust your standard of living accordingly.
3. Expensive "Normal Behavior"
When something is "normal" it is not special because you are not getting anything extra out of it. Money can disappear quickly when someone has an expensive normal behaviors, for example, eating out multiple times a week. You can avoid this trap by confronting your behavior and not seek what is easy and convenient.
4. Finding Enjoyment in Expensive Ways
The way you find enjoyment is a big determiner of how much money you will be spending. Rather than getting enjoyment in expensive ways like shopping, get enjoyment in cheaper ways like being outside.
5. Living in Expensive Locations
It is not easy to change locations, but your location might be the biggest determiner of how much your lifestyle will cost. If you live in an expensive location it may be impossible to keep up. You can avoid this trap by living in a location that is more affordable.
6. Too Much Social Media
Social media isn't bad, but massive consumption is bad. A lot of social media thrives on selling or promoting products. When you consume too much social media you could spend a lot of money on buying products. You can avoid this trap by having self control in how much social media you consume.
7. Believing You're Not Enough
Society likes to tell you that you are not enough and you can become enough by buying different products. This is a money trap that consumes all of your money and leaves you with a bunch of possessions. You can avoid this trap by understanding you are enough and you do not need a nuch of material possessions to become enough.
8. Thinking You Get Rich From Money
You do not need to have a bunch of money to live a rich life. Society tells us that a rich life means living in a big house with a bunch of material possessions. This trap eats away your money and forces you to keep making money. You can avoid this trap by living a life of experiences with less.
9. Constantly Chasing Money
We live in a hustle culture where we value success and profit over freedom and time. Money can improve your life, but only up to a certain point. Spending all of your time trying to make money is a trap that makes you poor in time. You can avoid this trap by living a life less focused on money and more focused on time.
10. Thinking You'll Find Contentment Through Possessions
Consumption is like a drug where the more you consume, the more and more you will need to consume. You will never be truly content through consumption, so instead of chasing contentment through consumption, chase contentment within.

Thinking you have to own a home to build wealth...complete rubbish!! If you save the money that you have to spend when owning a home like property taxes, lawn service, maintenance, etc etc etc. I live in a beautiful apartment with a great pool and lovely grounds, when I need something repaired or replaced the maintenance man is at my door! This year I got a new microwave, dishwasher, and a/c unit!! I save the money that I would have to spend to maintain a house, $1,000 per month in an indexed fund and I should have nearly $100,000 save in 10 years!! No headaches, no hassles!!! Oh, and I have no car payment, I bought a used car paid it off in two years and said goodbye to high interest car loans lasting 5 years!!!!

@@luciagonzalez4899 mmm not really. You can be 60 years old and finish paying off your mortgage, while you can be 70 years old and still paying rent. Also when you finish off paying a mortgage you already have equity and the freedom to sell or downsize if you wish, let alone keeping some cash for savings. My cousin is 63 y.o., he just finished paying off his house last year. He had purchased his home in his early 30’s for $220K. Now he has it for sale for $700K and once he does, he’s moving to a small condo in another smaller city. He probably will pocket over $350K to $400K and will purchase his condo cash. So there you have it.

I'm now at age 72 and I began to avoid money traps 47 years ago at age 25. Yes, I had a large home, but only when I had 5 children and a wife. Now, my wife and I live in a comfortable smaller home I paid for with cash when I abandoned the big time. (And living in a quiet rural agricultural area near a small Florida town.). 😊

I am 68 and live in Southern California. for 13 years when I was married, I owned a house and was broke. I left the marriage and raised our twin daughters on my own. Owning may not be the American dream. In the end, the home was a money pit. Renting these past 21 years has allowed me to save and invest to the point where my retirement is secured. There are brief times when home ownership makes sense but most of the time you are overpaying with the belief that there will always be someone to pay more for the house than you did. Realtors never sit down with you and calculate the true cost of owning.

@@Magdalena287 My 2 bedroom apartment is 2550 a month. A 2 bedroom condo is my area is a million dollars. Add on the property taxes, condo association fees and insurance, you are looking at about a $7000 a month expense. Single family homes start at 3 million. By my math, renting has been cheaper.

My 20's I spent $ to have what my friends had, My 30's I was spending $ to keep up with the neighbors, by the time I got to be 40 I realized I didn't like my neighbors nor the lifestyle and being broke, So.....I moved, I paid off my house in three years, drive a economical car that is paid for, and have enough money saved that I quit working at 50 1/2 ....oh and I have a child in school still. Very true, time is way more valuable then money. Waking up to this realization myself over the past couple of years and have made similar changes. I used to be the idiot who bought Starbucks every single morning on the way to work as a treat or incentive to bribe my brain to go to a job I didn’t like so I can afford things I wanted verses now I work part time from home for a fraction of what I used to make and still able to live on it making my own coffee at home got a smaller place and sold off some luxury items that were just sitting there and guess what I can go to the beach in the middle of the week I can read a book on a Monday morning by the pool and this is the kind of freedom and enjoyment that is worth more then a fancy car and a Rolex hands down absolutely no doubt about it.

Boy can I relate to #5...I just moved to Ohio from Seattle. I was paying $1,100 in rent (tiny studio apartment), gas was almost $7/gal, and food was outrageous. Beautiful area but I was priced out and it wasn't worth it at all.

I live in Los Angeles. "Keeping up with the Kardashians" is not a TV show, it is a commandment. One must spend like the Kardashians, homes, cars, travel, jewels, clothing, fine dining. So many people look like they must be on top of the world yet they are drowning in debt. Many got to walk away from their debt during the Great Recession only to make the same mistake all over again.

I realized in my early 50’s that I had enough money to cut the hours at work by half. I was working in commercial real estate, a very competitive business. I am now 59, I can choose a couple of good mandates to work on per year and I have a lot of free time. At the beginning of the pandemic, I bought an electric bike. I now use it on beautiful trails in the country side, I can easily do 40 miles a day. All free of charge except for the electricity consumption. If you want to manage your money the way you want and not be influenced by others, then you must carefully chose your friends carefully. You are not going to have that many friends because people will judge you according to the way you spend your money.

I got caught in some stupid things. My mother taught me a phrase that helps a lot when people call to sell: "What are you trying to sell?" Another thing are quotes. A cable service could cost $99.99 a month, but there are fees and taxes on top of that, so you could easily be spending $135 a month.

How do you deal with having friends who like spending a lot of money when hanging out? Wanting to hang out but not spend money on things I don't care about or that don't bring me happiness just because they want to without driving people away. Because the truth is, very few people understand.

Maybe invite them to your house for dinner, backyard bbq and while everybody's there for dinner say okay who's doing dinner next week? Or everybody chip in and bring a dish that type of thing.

You could just be honest with your friends as well and let them know that you don't have extra money to spend right now because you have it budgeted for something else.

maybe understand that it's within you - try to fight that unhealthy "desire to please" first and understand where it comes from - also, when you start to feel awkward or strange not spending instead of focusing on how you feel focus on how the other person feels: be a nice shopping partner: why don't you try the other size/color?, let me see your new xx, not very hungry today but what did you order, what do you like of its taste? - know that consumption is because they want that validation and they crave for the feeling of importance money gives them ..so just provide that validation cause is free to give. HOwever, truly rich people are not the ones that spend on things but the ones that already have so much money that they seek fulfillment in other things like philosophy, art, intellectual development so if you have the advantage of being in a high class environment those are the friends you should be looking to make instead of meeting the 'overspenders' ..just my 2cents :)

There was a time that i spend to much time on youtube. Mostly I watched American youtubers ( i’m from the Netherlands) and i was always fascinated about how it’s like to live in the states. And they things you guys have and we don’t. . So what i did was watching american youtube families. With their perfect house… perfect Tesla cars… perfect kids… amazing vacations like disneyworld… the latest gadgets.. all being very successful very happy and full of energy.. yes i knew they were promoting product ( like tesla). Or some other toys or gadgets.. maybe even dinsey who knows… but some how it gave me a negative feeling.. i became jealous. Thoughts like… why do i don’t own that electric car?… i wish i had that house that house in that neighborhood …… why i’m not happy like they are? Or successful.? Or those trips to disney.. i want to live in America! So what happened is… I started to dislike myself because I wasn’t so successful and having a good and interesting job like them… and feeling happy like they are … I disliked my car because I compared it with their cars . I didn’t appreciate my house anymore because it didn’t look as nice… i even fantasized about leaving the Netherlands for America because I didn’t wanted to be here anymore because america must be way better! ( never bin in The states)… i even looked for lease contract and loans to get myself an ev because they said get money from the bank and get yourself a Tesla! Or even a loan for going to Disneyworld to get their experience. Man it was like i felt depressed . Some how I stopped myself watching them. And slowly accepting where i am in life and trying to appreciate what i have… if i want something i save for it. Like a car… or a vacation to the states for first time. I give myself goals .

I never bin in the states but it looks like there is just more fun things to do in the US. Take roadtrips for example. All scenery of North America. In europe driving a car is terrible with all those rules overhere. And everything is cramped. But i think i have to experience America for myself. I am saving hard for it. How is it like to live on florida?

@@jdnrotterdam2150 Just remember that in America credit cards are easily available so many of these families live in debt. Most Americans are not wealthy but living on credit gives the average family access to more expensive lifestyles.

I’m someone who’s really into watching movies but I refuse to ever purchase another video streaming subscription. I’d rather purchase the movies or tv shows I actually enjoy watching than pay every month for hundreds of movies and tv shows I couldn’t care less about watching.
