Im a manager in a grocery store in Missouri and a few years ago a cardinal flew in the receiving bay during winter and refused to leave. Many employees took to him and we called him Marty. I would feed him berries and seed every morning by the open bay and he eventually trusted me enough to land on me to feed. I loved his songs and smiled when he would see me and fly up to greet me. In the following spring I knew he had to go back out side to his people. I sat out on the back docks and whistled for him and shook his food cup. He flew to me and ate. Eventually after a few days of this I think he got the hint, he flew off into the trees and I never saw him again. I hope he did ok out there, I still think of him every time I'm around the back dock.

@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane
@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane 3 жыл бұрын
@@communistvulture6516 If those "poor little sparrows" happen to be house sparrows, I don't blame him! We had them show up on our property last year and they harassed all the birds, including the cardinals. They are very aggressive. If they weren't house sparrows, well... cut him some slack; maybe he was just claiming his territory. There's a lot more sparrows compared to cardinals and the cardinals have to work hard for a place to live and find food.

There is nothing better during a drab, grey winter day than to see a bright red cardinal in a snow-covered pine tree! We had 3 pair around this past winter, but there appears to be only 2 pair around still. I think they dispersed off into their own territories, but the two pair still come back to our feeders. It's true, we see them mostly early in the morning and at dusk. It always sounds like they're singing "purdy, purdy, purdy" to me! We had the wonderful experience of seeing them nest in a blue spruce tree right outside our front window several years ago. They had two babies, and when they left the nest the parents took them in two separate directions, I assume to up their chances of survival. One year, the male stood on our window air conditioner and pecked at his reflection in the window. We have since gotten central air and had to take the blue spruce down due to disease, but they moved to a group of pines a little further from our house so I'm hoping to see lots of babies this year! They are very "parental" birds, so I'm not surprised to hear they feed other bird's babies, but I did not know they were related to rose breasted grosbeaks!

During the coldest months of winter here cardinals stop being territorial and get along. It's not uncommon to have a dozen at my feeders when there is snow on the ground.
@Dragrath1
@Dragrath1 3 жыл бұрын
Yep also where I live they tend to be accompanied by white throated sparrows in the late evening twilight flocks. Both species seem to get along fairly well so long as any given bird sticks to their designated foraging zones. if a bird wanders to far into the neighboring birds foraging zone a fuss off ensues and both white throats and northern cardinals are feisty little birds. In the fall when the leaves are still scattered on the ground both species are very hard to tell apart from the leaves even with binoculars in the twilight. When there is snow or the ground is frozen they both concentrate together much closer with smaller foraging spots tolerating many more birds.

The beauty of the female cardinal is often overlooked. I had a window feeder over a couple of winters, and seeing the female up close, especially with the sun on her is quite impressive. The subtly of the coppers and russets is as inspiring as the male's vibrancy. "Drab" Harrumph!

I sat outside of my doctor's office this morning waiting to be seen and listen to the Cardinals, Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wren and Pine Warblers. Thank you so much Leslie for this information on the red cardinal. We have one that likes our porch. We didn't see him much in the winter. Now he has come back. He lives our porch. I think he is waiting for us to take down our coverings on our swing and chairs. He likes to sit on a corner of our awing and sits there in the evening. He actually will sit on top of my chair last year and when I come out and sit on my chair and drink coffee he goes to that corner of the awing. He is so cute and sings so beautiful! He has come back. We have a big picture window and he lands on the edge and looks in. He seems to like it by us. We don't bother him. I wonder if he is looking for a mate or if he is looking for food. We just let him be so we will see what he is going to do now that we are going to take the covers off the swing and bring out the chairs

Something that I find funny with Cardinals is the "Singing Battles" that they engage in during the summer to claim their territory. If one bird sings "Choo, Choo, Choo" at the end of his song, the other will do the same. If the first one does 6 "Choos" the other one will show that he can do 6 "Choos" too, and back and forth it goes. They are also not very discerning about who they're singing against. I don't do a very good Cardinal imitation, but it's good enough to get them to sing with me. They get especially worked up if I do it near "their feeders." I've had them fly around the yard singing back at me from different perches and looking really agitated trying to find the Cardinal that's in THEIR territory.

If you love the fact that they will attack their reflection. You also will find this cute as well. I have a pair of Cardinals in my yard. One day I decided to play the recording of their call from Marlin. The male and female Cardinal came rushing over to the area. Ready for a fight and to see who was in their turf. They were course confused to see a human in the area where the call was coming from. Periodically I will play the call; and they will come to see what is going on. Minus the gusto. This is also worked with 3 other birds in my yard (blue Jays, Carolina wrens, & white breasted nuthatch). Thank you for the videos, keep them coming.

a few years ago a cardinal came to the ledge on my apartment window, right below our hanging feeder. he wasn't interested in the feeder that day, and instead started pecking at the window. it was hilarious. he did it again a few days later and occasionally stopped by for the feeder as well. super cute. we would often see him with a female mate hanging out in the same tree right by our apartment window.

I have had an adult male cardinal attacking my truck window and side-mirrors regularly for the past few months. It reached the point where my white truck was covered in droplets of the cardinal's blood from his vicious fight against my car. After that i've started covering the mirrors and windows so he doesn't see another bird in his territory.

I used to work where a cardinal - called him Reginald - lived in the tree outside where I could watch. He would go crazy over my car mirrors, and I never knew what he was doing! He would fly into the car if the windows were down, smack into the windows, and slide down the front window. He was a delight to watch, though. His feathers were always in rough shape, and I only saw him get a mate once in three years.

I love these birds! Good looking with a beautiful song. We have a few here, frequenting our feeders, near Tucson, Arizona. Most are females, but lately the boys in red are proudly on the hunt.

I love cardinals so much! I miss them since we don't have them here, but I remember seeing so many in the winter growing up in the NE. My favorite fact you shared was definitely about the male birds feeding fledglings of other birds, and the fish!! LOL So cute! Thank you for another fun and informative video.

I thought the males were more brightly colored because they could draw predators away from the nest and leave the female to warm the eggs or tend the young. The cooperation between different species is always touching. In 'The Human Nature of Birds' a women described seeing a bird helping a squirrel feed her large brood! Great video, thank you.

Mr And Mrs Cardinal are really the first and last to visit us daily. Now, I know why. My favorite vistors with wings. BTW......I get high quality Walnuts locally for our Chipmunk and Squirells but the Cardinals absolutely love these Walnuts too....I always make sure my Cardinals get a bunch daily too!

We have so much enjoyed watching the cardinals feeding in our backyard. They have feed through the winter and now spring. We so enjoy watching them instead of Fox News in the Am and at just before sundown. No territorial issues as yet. But it is Easter Morning and we have sleet and 6 feeders with 6 male and female cardinals feeding.

i always put a little seed out in the late evening because the cardinals are there where the daily birds cleaned up the moring, and late afternoon feeder fills.

I’ve got a pair of cardinals that visits my feeder in the mornings and evenings. The male always calls high up on a maple early in the morning. Such a striking bird!

I enjoyed learning about the carotenoids giving the cardinal it distinctive coloring. Here’s a funny, cardinal related bit of information ...I practiced the cardinal song (and robin) until I had a pretty good imitation. When I studied birds with my kindergarteners I would perform the whistle for them...😜. Have to say it was a crowd pleaser.
