The problem with Mitty being added to Witcher 3 was that he would show up almost immediately after the update was installed if you had a large enough wallet. This was regardless of if you were at Chapter 2 or Endgame. I remember being accosted by this guy after booting up my 90% complete save, having accumulated my vast wealth legitimately, wondering what the deal was.

I've no qualms about admitting that I've cheated in single player games. After I've beaten the hell out of a single player game, sometimes it's fun to be a total god from start to finish. However, I'm a child of the 80's. Born in 1980, gaming since I was 4 when my dad shoved a Colecovision controller in my hands to cure my boredom with Donkey Kong. When multiplayer became a thing with LAN parties, cheaters were treated like lepers. I hold the same values today. My skill is enough. If I'm not as good as other people, I don't resort to cheats. I do my best, have fun, and try to get better. Digital Morals is what I call it. So many need to learn how it works.

Descent and Descent 2 had a similar setup to Heretic/Doom. The original Descent used "gabbagabbahey" (a Ramones song lyric snippet) as an unlock code for access to the cheat code repertoire, after which you could enter codes for things like full shields/armor and all weapons. However, if you type that same code into Descent 2, your HP/shields drop to _one_ point as a voice declares "cheater!" (And for that extra knife twist, the B key dropped proximity mines by default and that function still worked while typing in cheat codes, so you might off yourself with a mine or three trying to cheat.)

The whole system made for cheat codes in Theme Hospital was amazing. You would put numerical codes into the fax machine where you receive notifications and when they activated the announcement system would blare out "Hospital administrator is cheating".

I kinda wish there would be an adaptive anti cheat in an online setting. Like the countermeasure to a particular cheat is most appropriate. Say the cheater uses god mode, well they'll become immobile and weaponless because of it. Say they use teleportation, then let them become blind in game and on the map. Say they use wallhacks to see other players through walls, they'll get constant popup ads (maybe some nfsw) while the cheat is active... you get the idea.

First on off the bat... And I fell for this one! I didn't care as many did about a "Nude Lara" as I was WAY TOO OLD... I was already married and a father, to me it would have been a bit of fun... Something to laugh at as the Pixels and Polygons looked horrendous! (I didn't play any Tomb Raider games until I had a PC and by then the games were about 10 years old!) But STUPIDLY I fell for it!

I'm guessing the autofire on my old ps1 controller was too slow to trigger the anti cheat function, because I had no problems with it.

MGS Auto-Fire didn't always fail. There were some controllers that still worked.

Yeah, I spent most of my life thinking it was a lie. Some people dove into the code and found the trigger was if the input was fast and regular enough that it deemed a human couldn't do it. Apparently my MadCatz turbo controller was bad enough that it didn't trigger the detection.

Crusader: No Regret pulled the exact same trick Heretic did. If you tried inputting the cheat code from the first game (Crusader: No Remorse), you got immediately teleported to a the middle of an arena surrounded by copies of the final boss, with a popup informing you, "Of course we changed the cheats... duh!" You were almost certainly dead before you had time act but even if you somehow managed to beat the odds and kill them all, it up and killed you, anyway.

The metal gear problem was solved by using a Bic lighter. Just run the corner of the lighter across the button as fast as you can. Definitely an old school hack 😂

The nude cheat for Tomb Raider is essentially light hearted entrapment lol. Sneakily direct/guide everyone towards using the cheat then punish them for it. Government tactics.

I remember playing Metal Gear Solid and Ocelot telling me no to use auto-fire... so I did. I had no issues using it to clear the torture section. I guess some of the controllers were Hideo Kojima proof. Though, I'm pretty sure the answer is nanomachines.

The beginning sequence of the cheat codes are different (i.e. step left vs step forward). They do end the same with Lara jumping backwards.

The so called "NUDE CHEAT" from Tomb Raider 2 was the "Level Skip" or "WEAPONS / AMMO" Cheat of Tomb Raider 1....so basically everyone who bought Tomb Raider 2 tried to find out, if the same cheats work again and TADAAAAAAAAAA Lara would explode instead. The story about this being a nude cheat is plain and simply WRONG ! Tomb Raider 1 was my first computer game when I was 10 years old and I know how much I loved the game and spent time just running around and trying to find some places I haven't found yet within a level. Of course you always knew someone who had cheats for the game and so you got to know the one step to the front, one step to the back, turn around 3 times clock or counter clock wise and jump to the front / back and tadaaaaaaaaaaaa.... So when Tomb Raider 2 was released, the first thing I tried IMMEDIATELY after installing the game and starting the first level, was trying to use the same cheat and it ended in Lara exploding. It had NOTHING to do with any nude cheat rumor....

If the cheating is in a single-player game, I don't mind the slap on the wrist being light or funny. But if it's a multi-player game, give them the most embarrassing, public, shameful sendoff possible and make it permenant. Maybe it was just their smurf/puppet account, doesn't matter. They'll stop cheating if even the account meant to do the cheating and transfer the goods to the main profile keeps getting banned before they can complete their task. I don't even play multi-player games, but I still hate knowing others are having their fun ruined and their money thrown down the gutter because of sewage waste cheaters.

Keywords was "auto fire controllers that were firing about a certain input per second rate". So it was entirely true, your controller simply didn't auto fire quickly enough to get caught by the system.

Makes me curious though: Say you do the "run around in circles" situation but on purpose, and you've loaded up your game with hacks to make your team invincible... Can the guy ACTUALLY be defeated? I mean, the damage output and lack of player input is clearly how he wins, he kicks out 6000 points in one hit and you're not present to run away, but is he actually killable or did they make him invincible?

Exploits are not cheats. They are holes in the programming by fault of the developers. Using them is not immoral nor should be shamed. Using them is akin to learning a valid strategy. Cheats in single player are NOT heinous. Cheats in multiplayer, are. The simple fact this fact goes above so many peoples heads is hilariously aggravating. I don't question why you enjoy playing a game with god mode on, or having access to all the items on your own. You play, your way. I play mine. If you use cheats in multiplayer then you deserve to be punished, heavily. Exploits are NOT part if this portion. It is simply a method that players have found that works in their favor. A different way to play, overlooked by the Devs. Instead of punishing exploits, instead everyone else who didn't use them, either from ignorance or being incapable. Should be given a bonus of some kind to be on the same playing field as those that DO use exploits in multiplayer. Especially if the intention is to fix the exploit.
