The fact that they got John Hurt to not only do that but make a crack on the same scene in Alien makes it one of the best comedic scenes ever.

Alien definitely deserves #1 because it has multiple reveals, facehugger; chestburster, and then xenomorph. Just think if there were one or two more intermediate stages. We would've been constantly on edge wondering what was coming next.
@GarrettPDGA
@GarrettPDGA 7 ай бұрын
And the first reveal of the chest burster was the first time the actors find out the antagonist of the movie. They also weren't prepared for the chest bursting scene, so their reactions are much more genuine, especially since the effects were so realistic for that time.
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle 3 ай бұрын
@@GarrettPDGA Particularly, as I've heard it, they weren't warned of the level of blood-spray that was going to happen. In particular, Veronica Cartwright (who played Lambert, the Nostromo's navigator) had no clue she was going to get a fountain of gore right in the face as she was leaning in right when the chestburster erupted out, so her raw panic and horror was genuine.

The part that really pissed me off about the pale man scene is that not only did she ignore the rules of not touching anything, she had this smug smile on her face as she was eating the berries, then shooing off the fairies who were trying to warn and save her just so they could get brutally eaten by the monster.
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle 3 ай бұрын
I wouldn't call it smug? It's clear that Ofelia's _enjoying_ what seems to be the first real treat she's had possibly in a very long time, given the rationing that's going on, and the fact that Captain Vidal doesn't seem like a man who would allow such indulgences. I also felt that it was pretty clear by how she seems so suddenly drawn to the table after completing her task, after initially walking right past it and _in spite of_ the Faun's warning, that there's something probably magical about the food that's tempting her, that it's possibly how the Pale Man gets its child victims to awaken it to feed. Food being cursed or enchanted is a not-uncommon trope in both faerie tales and myths, so it's entirely likely that there's more going on in the scene than just a child being willfully bratty and disobeying directions.

What makes the alien reveal so iconic is the fact the actors had no idea it was going to happen as they kept it a secret from them, so we are seeing genuine reactions of fear!

I actually liked the cgi monster at the end of smile. Im hoping years from now i can rewatch it and get a similar experience as i had theaters. With minor anxiety problems smile recreates worst momenta of disorder for majority of its run time. Expertly crafted. Im hoping the sequal can live up to the high bar. Most won't fully appreciate it for what it is.

Makes me kinda sad that "Mother" from Barbarian gets referred to as a creature/it 😢 Shes a scary antagonist, but shes still a human being who was horribly abused. Not a monster or anything supernatural/scifi. Her design is disturbing though
