The Donnas had a couple more hits in Australia and I'm pretty sure they were a really big deal in Japan for a while. Their drummer had to retire due to a back injury. They tried to continue with a new drummer but I think it probably just wasn't the same for the rest of them. They'd been playing together with that original line up since high school so it would have been strange replacing a core member of the band.

Drowning Pool contributed “Break You” to the Scorpion King soundtrack, which is a good song with a lot more lyrical and vocal content... honestly, they probably would’ve been a fairly successful band if the original vocalist hadn’t passed away so suddenly, Sinner was a fairly solid album for its time and place

Not a knock at you at all, just a thought I had at the mention of The Donnas: it seems like every once in a while, another girl group will come around that rock critics will say "finally proves" that "girls can rock too". The Runaways, Heart, and The Donnas. Here's a crazy idea: girls have always been able to rock just as much as the guys, and it's all y'alls misogyny that prevents you from seeing an all-girl band as legit. Like, I have seen way too many dude rock fans brag about how they don't listen to any girl band, including a band with a girl frontwoman and all dudes behind her.

When comparing rock one hit wonders of the 90's to those of the 2000's, one can't help but notice a huge difference, which is indicative of the general shift that was happening in mainstream rock around that time. While 90's rock one hit wonders are all over the place and often come from weird or even kinda fringe bands, 2000's rock one hit wonders are more often than not associated with a certain format and sound way more formulaic and disposable, with only a few quirkier tunes here and there.

NOFX 's vocal sound is remarkably pervasive in late 90's pop /punk formula. They deserve their own subgenre due to the number of bands that were/are derivative of their distinctive tone. I just called it "whine rock" however that was before Emo was a thing. Punk in Drublic is still one of my favorite albums!

13:00 With those two fronting Metro Station AND being older brothers of two Hannah Montana leading actors (Trace Cyrus being the older brother of Miley Cyrus, and Mason Musso being the older brother of Mitchel Musso; Emily Osment is likewise a younger sibling, with older brother actor Haley Joel Osment), sometimes I wonder if Metro Station didn't have something to do with the Hannah Montana TV show. As I just found out, it was thanks to that show that the band actually even formed. Interesante.

To be fair, I think Drowning Pool would have had more hits had their original lead singer not died when they had barely hit their stride. Its pretty rare for a band to recover from that. Not many AC/DC's or Journey's out there.

All I can think of when I hear "California" is that the lyrics come from "California, Here I Come" by Al Jolson. Almost 100 years old now so I'd guess most people don't remember this song, but "California" always sounded like a modern (at the time) interpretation of that old song.

One of the cooler and often forgotten one hit wonder suggestions of the 2000's (at least to me) is "Beat the World" by Pressure 4-5. The whole album "Burning the Process" (signed to Dreamworks of all labels) was an excellent attempt to replicate that 90's helmet sound and expand upon it. "Beat the World" is an even better standout that actually charted at #39 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts. They unfortunately broke up 2 years after that record, mostly due to 9/11 slowing their momentum while touring and the label financially screwing them over. seriously, if you get the chance, check out both the album at this particular single. I think you'll be pretty surprised!

Oh god, "Bodies" instantly made me think of an E3 pretty much fresh out of AIT who was renting the house behind me. He would blare that song. He'd also wolf whistle at me and climbed my fence drunk. Found him passed out in the backyard, good times.
