In Manitoba Canada, the superstores have a system called Loop, where all food, produce, baked goods, poultry etc that gets discarded because expiration dates, and produce starting to go bad, farmers can pick up loads for free for their animals, so it’s doesn’t go to waste. For the dust bath, there is a dirt called Diatomaceous Earth. It is a fine powder and natural insect killer. Add it to the area your chickens are bathing in, and they will be insect free.

My wife and I live in a rural area in Central Oregon. Last summer, we discussed and decided to raise chickens. Our property is only one acre. I agree so much about the automatic chicken door. Are used to think that was just a luxury. Until I got one. OMG! It is so much easier now. I just set the timer so that it closes after dark. 99% of the time all the chickens get in, sometimes it takes the young ones a little bit to figure it out but once they do it's great. Now I don't have to get up at 4 o'clock in the morning just to let them out of the coop during the summer.

Chick math got us already - when we went to pick up the chicks we had ordered, we accidentally wound up going home with two more than we had planned. I am not going to be able to do true free range, but am hoping to build a couple spaces to run them in for more exercise besides the main run and coop. Wound up with some black australorps, barred rocks, wyandottes (blue laced gold), and Starlight green eggers as the last minute wild card.

Some people grow Winecap (King Stropharia)mushrooms in such a way that the underground part of the fungus lives under the chicken run, but don't be surprised if it spreads widely on your property. Although they are a good companion for almost anything growing in a garden. Winecap mushies are very helpful in that they actually live on woodchip or straw mulch and they don't care what kind of wood. They are edible and many say they taste similar to portabella. Lots of videos on this, Paul Stamets is a great source for mushroom info.

We started giving ours black soldier fly larvae in yogurt at maybe 4 weeks.
@marscrow Жыл бұрын
Black soldier fly treats are high in calcium and since the chicks don't start laying eggs until 4 or 5 months old, there's no way for the extra calcium to be released from their bodies. It's possible that it could kill them, depending on how much you treat them. A lower calcium treat, but high in protein, would be meal worm treats. Safer for chicks and since they haven't had soldier flies they'll love them. Remember to give them chick grit so they can digest the meal worms. You can just leave a small bowl of grit in their area. Good luck.

Those treats look like Black Soldier Fly larvae. Ugh. Those like to breed in my kitchen compost bin. Thousands of ugly grubs every summer. I got tired of picking them out of my compost (because I hate them so much) that I got five hungry retired-from-an-organic-egg-farm hens to eat them. (I'd had chickens before moving to suburbia). I tossed out a shovel full of compost every day until the grubs were all eaten, then round up the compost scattered on the ground and let it finish composting. More grubs would appear and the ladies would feast again. The retired ladies set about laying again! Then I had to make a decision whether or not I wanted to eat eggs made with those awful grubs. . . . The neighbor got them. He didn't mind at all. Said they were the tastiest eggs he'd eaten since his grandmother raised chickens on their farm in Minnesota. See what a bag of treats in your video can do? Thanks for the memory. And, oh yes, my ladies love to dust bath under my house eaves. There's several spots reserved for them. As for poop - yes, they leave it everywhere, including at my back patio door. (Nice gift, thank you ladies). I use gloves and snatch up individual poops and put them in my compost bins. I'm probably the only person in the country who does this, but I can't stop myself. Don't want to waste such a precious asset.
