Here is how I trained our dogs (and a few others) to be safe around chickens. Intro is a little harsh but want to make sure you know this is a more in-depth video, not a "quick-fix" solution. A few common MYTHS that I can't believe are still circulated, like "a dog can't be trained once it has killed a chicken" or "dogs must be started around chickens as a puppy" are downright silly to those of us who know better. Don't get caught up in other people's excuses -- do as much research on science-backed dog behavior as possible to pursue the dream dog and relationship you really desire. It's totally possible, and you can do it! (More resources below)

One thing to note is that it takes 2 years to train a Livestock Guardian Dog (LGD) from a puppy. Before then a dog is a juvenile and will potentially view chickens as a squeaky toy

I think I got lucky. I know nothing about dog training but my boxer/pit mix (Max) is the best dog ever made. This is going to be long, but somebody may benefit from it so... Day one I put the chicks in the floor in their brooder box in a spare bedroom with the door closed, then brought Max in and put him in a sit/stay. (The only commands he knew) We spent about 15 minutes several times a day with me picking up each chick, holding it completely covered in my hands and letting him sniff each one and hear the little noises. He got verbal praise the entire time he wasn't trying to eat them. The next day, I let him see their feet and beaks and sniff them all many, many times. He loved getting to sniff them and would sit at the door ready to go sniff babies. By then, the chicks were too big for me to completely cover in my hands so I held them up to the edge of the box and if Max growled or showed any signs of aggression, I would drop the chick back in the box and it was game over, we left the room. Then I would go in alone and make sure he could hear me loving on the chicks without him. It became something he looked forward to so he stopped being aggressive to get to play the game longer. It didn't take long for him to understand the rules. So then we moved the babies to our bedroom and he started sleeping in the same room with them. I would just pick them up and let him sniff and lick each one. (We started calling it the "Lick-a-chick" game). We played this game for hours. He would stop long enough to eat and go potty, then he was right back at it, barking and wanting me to show him a chick. He was obsessed and learning to love them. When the chicks started jumping up on the side of the brooder box, Max would sniff them and boop them back in the box with his nose. It was a game to not let the chicks escape. Then one morning I woke up to Max lying in bed wide awake with six chickens asleep on his back. They had flew out to be with their mama dog and his warmth. He was being so still like he didn't want to wake them up 🥰 They had been there a while because Max had chicken poop all over his back lol. Once the chicks were old enough to go outside, Max would be right there with them, scratching in the yard to help them find bugs. He had turned into the best chick mama anyone could ask for, and they taught him that sometimes treats hide under the dirt lol. After the chicks were full grown, we rescued a Beagle puppy. Oh no, a hunting dog! Max was super offended when the new puppy went outside and thought he was going to chase HIS chickens. Max taught the new puppy that chickens are to be protected and not chased in about 3 days (what took me 6 weeks to teach him). Max also potty trained the new puppy. Like I said...Best Dog Ever!

Great story! Years ago I taught my dog the same way when I got kittens. He picked up on it after a couple of weeks. I have a different dog now, he’s a hot mess, anxiety and jealous of me paying attention to another animal, so I’m wary if it’s going to go when I get chicks this spring. Fortunately the property is big enough the chickens can have their own double fenced area if he’s not willing to be nice to them.

Yes I have 4 dogs and one of them is really smart. He does the same thing, he corrects the other dogs when they do something wrong. He’s a 4 year old lab/pit mix named red. He’s second in command after me lol it’s so funny because he’s so quick to realize when something is about to go wrong. I’m a sucker for strays so he’s good to have around.

I think you missed a step. Especially for the first introduction. Let them run! Play fetch, go for a long walk. A tired dog is a good dog. Not getting enough energy out Makes cashing more exciting. We are training our dogs to cats right now.
@neiuke1149
@neiuke1149 Жыл бұрын
Not true. Running before training session is never a good idea. It makes dog’s adrenal glands produce hormones that cause fight or flight mechanism. If a dog has too much energy then a little brain work exercise would be nice, but just a little walk where he can sniff would serve the same purpose.

I have a dog who killed a chicken, I still have chickens and the same dog. Now this dog eventually learned that these chickens are Mine not hers, and eventually just pretty much started ignoring the chickens. But recently got a newer younger dog. And she is a handful. She isn't a very big dog just super hyper. And tried to show her how the older dog just ignores the chickens , but she is younger and very curious, so kept trying to get back to the chicken coop. Which eventually led the older dog back to the chickens. So now I have to retrain them both. 😪

Hello! I never imagined my lab mix would be good with the chickens. But. By golly, he’s not tormented them at all once we let them out of the run to free range. He almost continues to check his perimeters constantly. I think he has shepherd in him! And is chick protecting! I’m so Glad! I still supervise free range. But he seriously doesn’t pay almost any attention to them now that I’ve let them out. He used to run up and down the coop. Which had made me nervous. But I think he just thought he needed a new protective perimeter!

Thank you for this video. I want to get another dog to help protect our free range chickens. Our 80 pound Pitsky does a great job, very protective and patient with the chickens. When the chicks were pullets, they would climb all over her or she would let them lay on her. The chickens are 1 and 2yo now and I don't allow the chickens to peck her, she has never reacted when they do, she will get up and walk away or look at me to correct the chickens behavior. She knows it's her job to protect the chickens. Your instructions are very clear and I am confident I don't have to get a puppy, I can adopt an older dog and make this work.

Brilliant video. You covered many important aspects of conditioning that people ignore. Mainly, knowing when to stop. Small, training sessions that end with a good note is the cherry on top. Finish with an easy behaviour, like sit, reinforce, end of session. Doesn't take much time if you scatter 5-15 minute sessions throughout the day/week.

You nailed it! I'm not a dog trainer, but my daughter is, and she has taught me so much. I had house birds and we left their cages open during the day. If our Husky German Sheppard mix thought we didn't see them and they were on the floor he would knock us out to protect them. Now I have 2 Yorkies and want to get chickens. I know they can be trained. Love your videos, they're so real and so detailed.

I appreciate the time you took to post this great video. I grew up around chickens but unfortunately thier fate as far as thier environment was not so nice. We had to keep them in a pen with a large coupe attached. The condition of the pen was often muddy (Pacific Northwest weather) with no vegetation. Also most our dogs would attack them and the attempt to train them by my dad was horrifying, tying a dead chicken around the neck of the dog for days! Unfortunately this did not work. Keep in mind this was around the 1960's, way before KZbin. I personally am going to homestead on some property I own in Arizona so am going to raise chickens for eggs and propably meat so I'm very thankful for this video because I definetly am going to have at least one dog and I want a sweet and harmonious environment for everyone. Thanks!

This all looks like sound advice. Since you asked, the way I trained my dog to not go after my small household pet (my cat) was similar, in that it took time on a leash, building familiarity. The one addition was that I also used the "No" command. I think it's awesome that folks are training without that command now, and I admire that positive methodology very much, however back when I trained her, "no" was what was recommended. The moment that was very effective to use it was immediately upon her ears perking forward towards the animal. I would tell her "No" *right* as those ears went forward. It seemed I was catching and responding to her predatory interest before the predatory chase switch was fully turned on. Once in a predatory chase mode, nothing will stop an animal, but I found that you can divert them if you catch it right away. All this was on a leash of course. Realizing how effective this was, I would also use it on walks if she saw a squirrel, and it worked to nip the chase impulse in the bud.

This is very helpful. I have gone to training with all my dogs over the years. We are not at that point training the dogs. We are learning and are being trained to train dogs. We are responsible for sending the message. If they don’t understand, that’s on us. Luckily I am getting pretty good at this. I do use ‘no’ when necessary and I use it so seldom she pays attention immediately. No choke collars, no prong and no electrical shocks. Just communication and treats or after training, accolades. Zoe (my dog) deserves it. After all english is her second language. Thanks for new training ideas.

Hopefully I can make this story short. But I have a boston terrier, lab mix and Alaskan Malamute. I just got my chicks about a week ago. My dogs haven't really paid much attention. A sniff at the chicks box now and then. I did start opening the door into my washroom, which seconds as my seedling room and chick room. I figured my dogs would get use to the chirps and so a little easier maybe to incorporate the chicks into our family.Then I watched your video, well my dogs get extra excited when they get on a leash, that means bye bye time. So the first thing I did wrong. I work from home and I heard the chicks just chirping up a storm. Then silence. My first thought was my malamute got into them and.....so I run to the chick box and Wilma has herself perched on the top of the box. I put her gently back in and I look for Betty. Not there. I look for dogs. The two biggest asleep while guarding the front door. As I turn towards my living room there's the small dog following Betty as she saunters into the living room. After being thankful none of the dogs really cared and paid attention to the chirping I started singing Do wa diddy diddy dum diddy do, there she was just a walk-in down the street. LOL Thankfully the great chick escape ended happily. So I continue to take care of the chicks with the dogs around and the more I do it the less my dogs care. However, I am watching this again so I can learn when the chickens are big enough to go to the back yard. Thanks for great info!

I like the 'gentle leader' which mounds of research have been done (wolves controlling their young by putting their mouth over their pupps nose). Its VERY loose, meaning it can eat, drink and play with toys using it. It literally is a pinch of the owners hold at their end and the dog walks without pulling. This is a stepping stone. Eventually a normal leash as you described does work. Secondly, I'm working with DogBoneHunter (see his videos) who trains hunting dogs without aggressive tools. However, I'm trying to figure out if desensitizing my dog to chickens, would ruin her for pheasant hunting. I may need to keep them separate, but still looking into this.

Wonderful video and tips. I agree with everything. However I have a big question. We have a German Shepherd and after many training sessions she learned really well how to behave with chickens. She wasn't attacking them anymore at all. The question is simple: what about the dog eating the chicken poop? I wonder what is your experience about it because in our case it became a big deterrent from leting our dog share the yard with the chickens and even let the chicken free range more often without having to clean after them.

So every morning I go out with my son, dog and baby to let the girls out of the coop into the run (dog doesn’t go into the run) but she does get excited by them and will run around the outside, ears perked. It seems I’ll have to stop that routine because at this point it’s an excitement for her and I need to reverse that. So for now it’ll be leash time only and she’ll be distant from the coop and I’ll slowly work on these. Thank you!!

Still working on my two labs, but I think we are really doing good. We use a wire fence for a run for the chickens and the dogs have the rest of the yard. They will come up to the fence to sniff at the birds who usually just walk away from the dogs. The plan is to get to a place where the dogs are as relaxed as your dogs are and free range the birds. So far no mishaps with the birds that like to fly over the wire to free range on their own. It is a slow process but I know that we will get there.

My adopted/rescue dog is a pug foxterrior mix. We are moving onto 10 acres and he is a mess on a leash, he’s reactive to other animals but not in a “mean way” he barks and it does sound aggressive. But when he is with other animals he just sniffs and puffs his chubby chest out. I’m not gonna lie, I am nervous about him being around our chicks and ducklings. But I also think the freedom to play and roam he will get in the country will wear him out (he’s got the body of a pug with the energy and coloring of a fox terrier) he’s a wreck on the leash though…. We walk every single day, nothing ever works to train him with leash walking. Guess I should just keep working on it but after 4 years I’ve generally just accepted that he is the way he is

So we have chicks in a brooder in the garage. The dog also has a giant crate in the garage... hes just figured out the chicks are in there and is very interested in them... would it be helpful to have him in his crate at night next to their brooder so he can see them and get used to their sounds?

We are in a very difficult place emotionally right now. When we acquired our male Border collie at age 2 1/2 months(5 weeks ago) we already had 6 chickens. They are pets! They are not for meat and eggs. One of our chickens is a miracle who could not walk or even hold her head up for a couple of weeks and was separated in her own cage where we once kept some Doves. Miraculously this hen got better and started to walk again and with great care was allowed to forage and be with the other chickens. Petunia is an inspiration to us. We have a half acre back yard that is fenced in with many trees and a garden area. The dog chases the chickens and we have been very determined to condemn his chasing them and he has stopped doing it as often and with as much intensity but out of the blue he starts to savage Petunia as the smallest one. Yesterday he almost killed Petunia by biting her neck and my wife ran him off just in time. I feel betrayed. We used these techniques already. We would hold and coddle the chickens right in front of him to teach him they are beloved pets and part of our family. This is a dog that is spoiled. He gets all the attention and love in the world. He does not like dry puppy or dog food so we give him special food and meat and treats. This is not a dog that is alone with the chickens for 24 hours at a time. In nice weather(Tennessee) somebody goes in the back frequently and watches him. I wish we did not get this dog now. We have 2 cats that loved being in the back that now have to stay on the front porch. We were just talking yesterday about what a joy this dog was to us and he tries to kill our beloved chicken. Now he has to be in a 4X12 kennel during the day and I have no warmth for him at all.

I'm a former PD dog handler/trainer so when your cuddling your chicken in front of your spoiled dog your not teaching him/her to like your chickens your making your spoiled dog jealous. Your taking away his/her cuddling time with you and giving it to the chicken instead. You have 3 animals that you can teach to get along with the chickens but it will take time. Don't give up. The very first thing you need to do is un-spoil your dog. Work on his obedience training first. Does he get along with your cats? If you need help find a local obedience training club or enlist a professional trainer. German Shepherds are one of the smartest dog breeds so you have a head start right there. Do your dog some justice and get to his training and stop spoiling him.

We have a border collie who is about 15 months old now. She has improved a lot over the last few months but she was a nightmare as a puppy, so naughty that you couldn't take your eyes off her for a minute. Your puppy is extremely young and I think you are expecting too much from him, maybe he is not the right breed for you. Border collies get bored very easily and become naughty. They also have a very strong chase instinct which is why they make such good shepherding dogs when they are trained. Good luck.

I have two Blue Healers (brothers) one is deaf. And a long hair miniature Dachshund all are 9 years old. First time chicken owner. Obviously I will start with chicks and you are talking about fully grown chickens. So letting the chicks grow up with the dogs from the day I bring them home which will be within the next two weeks. Is this a good idea. Thank you. I really love you videos they are awesome.

What about if I’m starting with an 8 week old puppy? Can I just put the pup right near the chicken since it’s so little? And walk it around them daily?

Thank you for this and good training. Is the black and white dog a Border Collie? His color and tail make me think so. But his build and fur and movement and behavior makes me think Australian Shepherd. Australian shepherd is the breed I have had for many years now and I am quite familiar with them. I am a new chicken owner and my current dog is waaayyy to excited about them. Which I have been expecting.

Hi I just came across this video as I have a terrible time calling off my dog from the chickens. But I now understand that he has no pre requisites as you mentioned except he has no aggression but other than all of it applies to him. I know you’ve given a bunch of dog behavior books but can you help me with how to build a solid relationship with a dog so he respects and trusts you the most? What book or what steps do you think I need to take. I’ve done a lot of training and with multiple dog trainers I have realized the tests make him more hyper and without relationship none of the obedience training works. Thank you in advance

My dog doesn’t do anything to the hens while we are around, we can be for hours in the garden or cookout or just enjoying outside, she’s calm, she’s laying down or just walking by hens. When left alone for couple hours, she kills one.

Great advice from a wise young woman. I would add that a great first step in establishing a respectful relationship with your dog is Canine Good Citizenship training (focuses on the basics of behavior). Especially for the inexperienced dog-owner, I would suggest seeking out a licensed, AKC Canine Good Citizenship trainer and work towards certification, as it will teach the human how to read dog behavior and how to develop a calm and respectful bond with their furry friend. Positive reinforcement training is the key to a long, healthy life together.
