Flight of the Navigator, The NeverEnding Story, The Last Starfighter, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Howard the Duck, Explorers, The Monster Squad, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal were all my favorite 80's movies as child growing up and still to this day at 41 I re-watch them and have seen them at least more than 20 times each and I never tire of them, they're always uplifting and bring a smile to my face, I just love that era so much, the 80's RULES.

@grigorione7824 It probably sucks to be Daryl, the only kid to never age. He likely experienced repeated loss of close friends, as his peers kept growing up and moving on with their life. He'd eventually give up trying to live a social life and donate himself to science. Perhaps involved with deep space or ocean exploration. Maybe he's at the bottom of the ocean searching for the blue fairy. ;)

I remember MGM Studios in Florida (part of the Disney theme parks in FL) had a "ride" (or attraction to be precise) about sound effects. The main part of the attraction were these sound booths where you'd get to wear some REAL sound cancelling headphones (the wired type, of course) where you get to listen to this short situation filled with panning effects. After leaving the booths part, there was this one where you could experiment with some sound effects props for a film playing on loop. And the film was "Flight of the Navigator". I went to this park and attraction twice: in 1991 and 1994 and no one else seemed to know what film that was on both occasions. Such an underrated film.

5:54 - It was Veronica Cartwright not Nancy Cartwright who played David's mother (Had me wondering for a second how Bart SImpsons voice actor suddenly looked a lot older back then and a bit different than how she looks now). I was just watching your original video on Flight of the Navigator last night. It is one of my favourite childhood movies. I still remember the first time I saw it It was August 1994 and I was 6 years old and we had just moved house recently and I turned on the TV one evening and it was on and I remember liking it a lot, especially how the ship looked with the shiny metallic look, some of the music such as the theme and finale music which I loved, especially with the cymbal crash, not keen on the main title or credits music though. I never knew part of the movie was filmed in Norway, nor those back of the head shots of David wasn't him. Thank goodness they never went with that sex worm and made it have a cold instead, that would have been a bit too weird. It is a terrible shame what happened to the spaceship prop. I have wondered how good the ship and its interior might look if they were remade today but just remastered in higher quality without changing the look/feel.

I once read on some webpage in the 90”s, that no longer exists, about the deleted scene of David meeting the younger Carolyn. From what I can remember, David is on the boat with his family when he sees Jennifer on another boat. He raised his arm to wave to her, and is about to say hello to her, but becomes saddened when he sees another guy with his arm around her. But then he becomes puzzled because he never seen that guy before. His dad then says, “That’s what happens when you wait too long. All of the sudden they hear a little girl in another boat calling his brother Jeff. David turns around and sees Jeff ignoring her. David recognizes her as Jeff’s future girlfriend, in another deleted scene, and tells his brother “Whatever her name is” is calling him. Jeff looks surprised and asks how he knew that ugly girl’s name. Before David said anything a girl’s head pops up in that boat and David recognizes it’s Carolyn. He says hi Carolyn, which startles her. Then it is learned Carolyn is the future girlfriend’s cousin, and the boy who had his arm around Jennifer is Carolyn’s brother. It ends with the parents asking how he knew those two girls, but is interrupted by the fireworks.

Thank you Minty for posting an update on this classic. I actually showed this movie to my wife a couple months ago and she never saw it. She couldn't even believe it was a Disney movie too. But she definitely enjoyed it and so did I (again). Personally as a kid when this first came out I never knew it came out in theaters. But then again Transformers: the movie was only thing going on in my mind so I guess anything else took a back seat. When we had the Disney Channel back then, they were promoting this movie hard. Like as in "coming soon a special presentation." I remember the commercials pretty well about it too. So it may have very well been broadcasted on ABC when it first air as part of the Disney hour. But then maybe it was just broadcasted only on the Disney channel for about a week. Which I recall they always did that with new movies. All I know is I loved it the moment I watched. It didn't seem like a kid friendly type movie for a 6 year old me, but I stayed glued to the tv watching it from start to finish. Indeed it had that sense of darkness but that storyboard made it felt both surreal and enjoyable to follow. The music for the movie is something I never forgot. I was happy to recently find that "robot romp" theme. Because that ending credits scene was epic and left a etching memory in my mind. Now we need to watch that documentary. Man that's so sad how a child star can fall from grace like that but so happy he is back on his feet. Life lessons come full circle.

I loved this movie as a kid, went to see it twice when I was living in California. They should do a sequel where David as an adult has to go back to 1978 with the ship because something was lost when it crashed into those wires. Also, David’s first adventure is considered by most a crazy dream he had and nobody believes he flew in an alien ship. His wife doesn’t even believe him, he’s even made fun of by the people he knows. That all changes by the end of the movie, because after they find that lost thing after he went back in time and are chased by the government he finally returns back to his own time and like The Last Starfighter, he arrives in front of his wife and the people that made fun of him. He’s been missing for days and they have been looking for him Once they see him exit the ship, he’s finally believed. His wife doesn’t think he’s crazy anymore, and she gives him a big hug. The ship takes off as the military shows up in helicopters. Sorry, just thought of this out of the blue. What would make it even more special is if Sarah Jessica Parker returned.

Great segment, as always. Can't wait on your D.A.R.Y.L. episode.

When I was a kid I would have dreams of flying across land the way the ship would. The dreams have always stuck with me and even caused me as an adult to always reference the movie from those feelings. Pretty sweet

I still watch this movie on the regular. Love it in fact. The electroinc score is awesome. Alan Silvestri did the main theme.

Classic movie from my childhood! This made me want to revisit it after almost 25 years! Also, 5:55 Veronica, not Nancy, Cartwright.

Thank you so much for this Minty. I'm actually crying. I struggle with mental health problems and your number 1 fact has made me feel that bit more positive. Thanks again. You rock!

After watching this I sat down with my 8 and 9 year olds and watched it with them for the first time (they’re first time) and they absolutely loved it. My daughter commented on how much she loved the score!
