I like (not love 🤷) it myself, but I doubt anyone failed to understand the satire. It is neither subtle nor smart. Roger Ebert said that the filmmakers appeared to have thought they were too good for the material. That seems about right. It's dumb in a way that feels contemptuous instead of loving.

I also like MA, but it is as flawed as most people think. It LOOKS much better than it "watches". Lots of the humor barely lands and, despite what defenders of the film claim, Jack Nicholson (who I love) doesn't work very well in either role. I don't buy him as a President, and he's trying more than he's succeeding in his other role.

I always loved this movie. Still one of my absolute favorite movies, and fostered my obsession with all things Mars Attacks! related. I guess I can understand why it didn't do so well with general audiences, but I loved it for what it was. An alien invasion B movie with an A list cast. Everything about it is supposed to be absurd and kinda nonsensical. Sure, the cards paint a different picture, and it would have been a very different movie if it tried to follow the story shown in the cards (which there really isn't much of a story. Aliens show up, kill a bunch of people, cause general havoc, the military goes to Mars and kills the aliens). Instead, the movie is like...the aliens have an invasion plan, and end up getting beaten by human incompetence and dumb luck.
