I'm a 2D artist that hasn't made art in 20 years. I'm making a bust of a relative whose passed away and I have one photo. I have two tools, a scrapper and a hook. I made a good human head, but it won't look like the man. Very complicated face, not like my own. My method is flawed and this will get me back on track. Starting with buying calipers. I got used to my base face and just kept working, building on bad blocking, adding, subtracting adding it back. I need to get back to accurate, I need to go backward and fix proportion so I'm trying you out. So far, you've said all the things I expect, but this provides and organized way to work it out that I couldn't grasp. Good stuff. Also, excellent lighting.

How light is falling on your subject is important, as well as having even lighting so harsh shadows are not created . This can be misleading to your eye as a sculptor , also proper posture of your model , some people will tend to pull their head back into their neck , this is bad. For personality portraits you often need to use photos of the actor , usually a front view, side view, back view, 3/4 views form either side are good, keep it simple . For beginners too many photos are good to have but it can also be misleading . As you get more experienced those extra photos will prove helpful, also there is a secret to getting a better likeness ,it is the correlation between the eyes, nose , and mouth…..getting those distances correct . This will help you lock in the likeness . Hope this helps everyone, it has helped me .
