sadly the fact is that even fewer know what he actually did. most of the deaths were the result of the labor punishments (cutting off hands), which he banned. his lack of enforcement meant the band didn't do anything. you can blame him for it. another large part of the deaths were due to sleeping disease (also a result of his exploitational reign). He funded the best tropical medicine research university in the world to find a cure for it. yes, half of the population of Congo freestate got killed during his private ownership, but he didn't "butcher" them. his was a different category of deadly reign than the guy who murdered innocent citizens because he was bored. he deserves his place on this list, but he never actually condoned the genocide that happened in his name.

Yes, realpolitik was and is a sad reality in international relations. Countries have always sided with and supported the worst regimes because it was convenient to do so. In 1979 the US was still bitter about losing in Vietnam, so they saw the Khmer Rouge as a useful tool against the Vietnamese. As Henry Kissinger once said, "The Khmer Rouge are murderous thugs, but we won't let that stand in our way."
@alirezaeftekhary99802 жыл бұрын
this happens a lot, saddam Hossein is knows as one of the greatest evils now but when he attacked iran for 8 years we were fighting his regime he was fully endorsed by west even receiving so much supplies and supports but when he attacked a US ally (kuwait) he became the world greatest evil the world sees evil very subjectively
@keeftaylor8342 жыл бұрын
Your country never fought "the Pol Pot" Khmer Rouge because of humanitarian issues, your country fought over long disputed border issues. A quarter of the Cambodian population died under Khmer Rouge rule, and no one knows the approximate number: it ranges anywhere from 1.5 to 3 million. It's a huge discrepancy, and there's a reason for that. Under the Khmer Rouge rule, families were split apart, and those who initially survived and were put into work camps. During the Vietnamese invasion, the Khmer Rouge broke down and many people were able to flee to Thailand. Others decided to stay, and became victims of Vietnamese-occupied forced starvation. I think the Khmer Rouge Regime is responsible for at least 1.7 million deaths, with the Vietnamese responsible for an additional 1 million. By the way, how are the ethnic "Montagnards" doing in your country? I mean the ancestral inhabitants of many portions of Vietnam? You know, the people your country hunted down and killed by the tens of thousands of? The people still being persecuted by your government simply because of their ethnicity and their wartime alliance to the US?
@AndrewTranBaseball2 жыл бұрын
@@keeftaylor834 Again, you may not know or may not care but we did not invade Cambodia. Invasion is like when the US invaded Iraq or Afghanistan. We just had peace after 30 years of wars with the West. Do you think that we actually wanted another unnecessary war? You can stay there and talk about our country without even stepping foot on it. Be my guest and visit Vietnam, my friend. We don’t want war. We want peace but sure, we will put up a good fight against whoever want to invade us. How ironic (again) for an American (the country who invaded many countries) to talk about peace and democracy. If you want to know, see it for yourself. Oh by the way, did you forget that US-China alliance used Pol Pot and actually the figures behind to support it to mess with my country. I could proudly say that I don’t have to carry any firearms or feel scared of being shot at in public in my country. Different country has different political stances, different ideologies, agendas and problems, if you want to know and experience, come and visit my country. My grandpa fought in 2 wars, come and ask him, ask my grandma how it was to live under the Christmas bombing. Sure there are problems in my country, there is no country with no problems. Even the US. But at least, we are not aggressor here, not in the past, the present and the future. We fight when we need to fight. Good day my friend!

It's not that all of the worst people I history are from the last 100 years, it's that we far better understand how terrible these people were. Trying to find the same level of detail in the atrocities for someone like Caligula as hitler is obviously not going to be easy. Not to mention if we try to "rank" them based on the total loss of life, obviously this would bias towards more modern times when the population is much higher. What is most terrifying is the fact that out of everyone on this list 7 out of 10 are in the last 150 years. Out of all history 7 out of 10 most horrific people were in such recent times. Although this could just be because of inaccurate records from older civilizations not being good enough to put someone on this list such as some of the atrocities that pharohs committed in treatment of their slaves and other such situations as it was much easier to hide such atrocities then as we are in an age of information that is able to spread quickly and much farther than before. After all I am sure with the way slaves and other races were often treated by civilizations they probably didn't even think it worth mentioning in records when executing or murdering thousands of them.

The sad thing is after going through all the comments there's so many evil men in history. Between the video and the comments there's probably about 30 people, and I still saw people that were missed. Suharto, Papa Doc, Ceausescu, William McKinley just to name a few. Again all more recent. What I find sad about Hitler is that he had a chance to take another path. I'm sure many saw his painting and still refuse to believe that the most evil, most known dictator of all time... was an artist. Heck he wanted to become an artist, but his dad forbad it.
@goldenagenut2 жыл бұрын
Lol Hitler's paintings showed excellent technique, he never could master the human figure which is a big handicap, steered towards architecture, outdoor scenes that were as good as many of the successful artists of the time and much better than 99.9% of what you see from people nowadays, wasting art supplies and referring to the dubious finished products as 'paintings'. If he'd been accepted into art school and experienced some success he might have been too distracted and busy to pursue his er, rather unfortunate political passions ( how's that for understating it? lol). The guy was a talented artist, especially by today's standards ( ...today's standards 🤣 - ' I fed my dog a tub of lard and some blue paint and spread canvases all over the floor - what do you think? I'll start the bidding at 500K, they'll eat it up.' ). On talent alone I'll take a Hitler piece over a Twombley, Pollock or Banksy any day of the week.

I think Stalin and Hitler should switch. They're basically the same guy almost, but Stalin has successfully killed 1.66x more people. And I may be a little personal here, but I also think Nero was a worse Roman Emperor than Caliguwa due to his borderline Christophobia. Would have also liked to see Kim Jong-Il to be a big higher on the list. Some honorable mentions also could include Osama Bin Laden and Joseph Kony as honorable mentions. I am glad to see Genghis Kahn on the list, I had some friends who literally thought he was a good guy and brought up false equivalencies whenever argued against.

Genghis kahn wasn't a bad guy. back then every tribe wanted power if you weren't stronger than another tribe you would be invaded. when his dad died (because of betrayal by two tribes who he called allies who wanted his power) he was left by his tribe to die in the harsh winter with his mother and baby brothers. he survived and was living his life peacefully when he was invaded again by the same people who left him to die. he was captured and sentenced to death for no express purpose. He escaped and began to join the tribes together to get revenge for his father's death. He got revenge and then went about conquering his enemy's. he was not a bad person he abolished slavery and gave his subjects religious freedom he would leave colonies alone if they surrendered and paid him or joined his army. he was a kind conqueror in comparison to literally any other of that time and this time as well. He killed so many because its kill or be killed. So to say he's evil because he was good at fighting is just blatantly wrong.
