I was just reminded that the Guinness Book of Records once gave the most expensive fruit as being a grape sold for GBP 700, in order to circumvent the Sunday trading law of the time by giving a statue of Apollo worth £700 free with it. I imagine that the seller's words were something like this: "I can't sell you this now, because it's a Sunday. But what I can do is sell you this grape for £700, and give you the statue as a freebie with it." I believe this in the early 1990s. So the fruits shown here must only have come about, or only become so expensive, since this time.

I'm already doing that actually. From apples to grapes all from seed. Apples are a bit complex when grown from seed and not grafted. I've actually been looking for someone who's actually purchased some of these fruits. Haven't found anyone yet but if anyone ever does, save the seeds from any of them. I'm willing to try growing them. I was just inches away from gaining seeds for those strawberries but the deal fell through. The strangest thing though, I live in Vermont with no greenhouse and yet I have New Zealand Cripps Pink Lady apple trees in their second winter and growing fast. I have a young sakura tree and even have both a seedling cara cara orange and am working on some Asian Pears. People are always amazed to see what all I have in my backyard.

absolutely w ight and i have a few things to say to fact verse as well Why do you say that one Sekai Ichi apple would cost 21 dollars when the price written on the tag clearly says 580 yen which is less than 5 dollars (not that it is cheap but come one for someone who calls its channel fact verse , how about you check your facts ) I lived in Japan for 25 years and tried most of those fruits but you are so wrong about the prices , the Dekopon is not that expensive , you can buy a bag of 5 for less than 2 dollars at almost any local supermarket,. And there you go again, you say that the Shikaku Suika or square watermelon costs 800 dollars when you clearly show a picture with a price tag of 199 dollars, why the hell do you even contradict yourself ? And in Japan they cost about 8000 yen which is less than 80 dollars so there again you are wrong and you condratict yourself one more time with the Taiyo no Tamago Mango , you say that it will cost 3 000 dollars and you show a picture of the very same Mango with a price tag of 10 000 yen which is less than a hundred dollars and this is exactly what they cost and the Ruby grapes (and just for the record i had some last week , sent from family in Japan , cost less than 10 000 yen so less than a hundred dollars . The Densuke watermelon clearly again on the pic has a pricetag of 300 000 yen which is ridiculously expensive but it is less than 2800 dollars not 6000 dollars as you say it . And you forgot the most expensive one which is a very rare Japanese mask melon which costs over 10 000 dollars . Unsubscribing, i do not like poor research work .

Taiyo no tamago= "Sun's egg", not "eggs in the sun". Furthermore, your pricings are way off for the Japanese fruits. I've eaten all of them. They're available in many places, and they never cost as much as you've stated. For one, just look at the listed prices in the pics you displayed. For example, you say just one seikai ichi apple is $21 dollars. The price shown for one is 580 yen, which is about $5 usd. The dekopon oranges, yeah no way. Never that much. More like $12-$20 for six. The strawberries, you got closer. They run (per your pic) around $68 for twelve. Now that's a specialty shop, so they're pricey. I can easily find them at a normal supermarket for about $40 for twelve. The mangoes clearly show 10,000 yen per (slightly higher than average again), which is about $100. The watermelons show usd price of $199.99 in your pic. We get them here in Japan for about the same price (depends). The grapes, rofl! Now friggin way! They are easy to find every season for about $50-$70 per bunch. The densuke watermelons, per your pic are $500-$3,000. I buy at least one every year as part of our summer party. I can get them almost everywhere for about $260 usd equivalent. So, where you shop obviously affects prices, but come on.

Jennifer Baulier When I last visited Japan, I walked by a store that was selling individually-wrapped cantaloupes, each on it's own pedestal shaped like a greek column with a price that was tens of US dollars. A quick search suggests they're more like $40 in some places, though even $100 in the worst case. Whereas in many places in the US an equivalent whole fruit would cost about $0.81, or at most a few dollars. Not so much fruit is grown local in Japan, methinks. Although they do grow some lettuce in a sterile computer manufacturing clean room, which they sell for use in hospitals where pure uncontaminated food is desired (at a hefty price, no doubt). Japan is a rich Island, so you would expect useful land prices to be very high, and so whatever the land is used for is likely very productive. In such conditions it wouldn't be that surprising if land-intensive or poorly-climate-suited plants were more efficiently purchased from afar at a premium. Really the price of cantaloupe in Japan reflects their local land prices and the price of transporting sufficiently-fresh-and-not-damaged fruit from distant countries.
@kioku1198 жыл бұрын
I've been to Japan too. Osaka specifically. I studied there for a bit. I don't remember general fruit prices in the super market being insane, and have also bought grapes from fruit stands and things. That said it was a while ago so I don't remember prices clearly and a small town in Osaka may be very different than a fancy store in Tokyo or something. I also don't think I've ever bought cantaloupe there specifically. In terms of fruit I mainly remember there being different varieties of grapes that I loved and miss, but I know I've bought some other fruit at times. I also remember a tiny orange fruit I forgot the name of.
@BobWidlefish8 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Baulier The other thing I noticed was a higher price for cow products, whether it's leather or beef or milk or ice cream or whatever. I suspect the price for different fruits varies by the specific fruit, it's local popularity, the proximity of the store you're buying from and the port receiving the fruit, and the distance from the port and the country of origin, and the taxes and tariffs imposed by Japan on that particular fruit (if any), etc. Tokyo is incredibly expensive in general due in large part to very highly concentrated productivity that incentivizes high real estate prices, skyscrapers, etc that add a sort of premium to virtually all purchases indirectly based on how expensive the land is underneath you. So for sure the prices I saw were higher than most places in the world. And it's really only representative of Tokyo itself, not really Japan. Although Tokyo has about 11% of the total national population and accounts for about 31% of the economic activity measured by GDP. So in a sense Tokyo isn't representative of Japan overall, even though it's such a distinctly Japanese place and it represents a large fraction of the economic activity of the country.

@Nashoryno ! It's the symbol for both, but the little blurb on the top of the price tag is in Japanese. The unit for the Chinese Yuan is also 元, not 円 as written on the bottom right. @Nayeem If there's some magical apple tariff that causes a 400% increase in price, I'm pretty sure that would've been worth mentioning in the video. He didn't because there are none and he's talking out of his ass, and so are you, by the looks of it.

$800 FOR A WATERMELON SHAPED LIKE A SQUARE?
@morganolfursson25608 жыл бұрын
why do you say that one Sekai Ichi apple would cost 21 dollars when the price written on the tag clearly says 580 yen which is less than 5 dollars (not that it is cheap but come one for someone who calls its channel fact verse , how about you check your facts ) I lived in Japan for 25 years and tried most of those fruits but you are so wrong about the prices , the Dekopon is not that expensive , you can buy a bag of 5 for less than 2 dollars at almost any local supermarket,.

If your climate is similar to those where you bought it, then you probably could. But it's it's not, then you won't have a very good harvest.
@Miguel-hr5gl6 жыл бұрын
There is a very large chance the seed will not bear the same exact fruit. Kinda like us, seeds can produce a random plant and even then, climate, soil quality, watering, etc also have to be taken in consideration when it comes to the plant that produced the fruit.
