Good to have you back, mate. Just when I re-installed FS9 after some flying downtime :) Excellent vids (both this one and the approach plate). In another post, you mentioned you'll soon be teaching aviation. Judging by these videos, you'll be a natural: clear, concise explanations that are interesting and very easy to follow. KUTGW.

@FSX404 I could not agree more with increasing your knowledge of aviation because a good pilot is always learning. I'm a PPL with an IFR rating and I'm going to be going for my CFI soon so I'm right there with you. It's obvious you enjoy teaching as much as I do. I love sharing the knowledge of aviation because the information you provide could potentially save a life. I'm going to spread the word of your videos to all my friends at the FBO. We'll get you more views!

You have a good point, also, this series is really helpful, I'm now understanding how to read charts more, becuase before this, almost all of my approaches were RNP so I definatly have to say thanks for the tutorials, and plus it's cool to see full approaches flown manually, becuase in most videos I've seen people use AP all the way until they're lined up with the runway and on the glidslope so thank you and keep making vids like this PLZ;)

Awesome landing sir!! Let the naysayers and other non pilot so called "experts" judge you otherwise but you have gained a follower in me solely on the basis of this video alone! I am not a real world pilot (but would love to earn a PPL someday when I can afford it) but i also fly FSX a lot (almost all my spare time) and practice hand flying A LOT. Excellent job getting that big bird down in such treacherous weather in such a tricky place!! You sir are a legend!!

I find that simply flying the approach in VNAV simplifies the approach. Just follow the VNAV advisories. I set the altitude winow to the last fix, clock on the data window so I can monitor the fix altitudes. VNAV was a little high on the first 2 fixes but nailed the rest. This elimintes having to reset the altitude window at each fix. Not sure why you think we need an additional 200 feet. I have found altitude control not the difficult. Gret video, lots of work. Thanks Brad CFI CFII

@FSX404 Correct it does depend on the airline SOP.Aircraft also have to be equipped with autoland to preform autoland. As far as using the autopiot any plane operating above 29 000Ft has to have a functioning AP and on all the time (RVSM requirement). Autopilot is usually engaged 300FT after takeoff as the FMC programed correctly will fly the aircraft according to the route / follow your SID/STAR etc..

@pilotalex You can engage it at 300 or 400 feet, but I don't think pilots engage it that low. If I can remember correctly one of my buddies who flies a 747 for an Asian airline said he does it at around 1500 - 2000 feet. The rest of them who fly US carriers will fly it manually to 10,000 if the weather is VFR. Same during approaches. SID's are there mostly in case of loss of comm, the ATC will usually start routing the planes to their routes immediately after takeoff, traffic permitting.

@FF35Pilot Whatever you feel like it, I really change it as I fly, maybe not for these videos because I'm recording but for myself, I'll play around with it. I should really get an IR tracker, it would help for approaches like these

Hey, when you landed, did you just use reverse thrust or did you also apply brakes? I have done this approach over 20 times and I have always used both reverse thrust and brakes, but just to slow down before entering the taxiway have I used brakes.

Great tutorials and a lot of effort in the videos. I've used these to prepare for my sessions in a B737 simulator here in Hong Kong, You seemed to land long though. Compared to cockpit cam videos on KZbin, they smack the plane down at or even before the piano keys! And they are still winding out the turn as they touch down. With your +200ft philosophy, you end up high and have to dive down at the end and get "sink rate" warnings - quite different to the real life vids.

I would like to ask you 2 things! 1st: You land the plane all the way down manually or do you use the autopilot and the last moment you get it manually? What is the general rule for approaches and landings? 2nd: If you can't land due to poor visibility, you declare a missed approach and you make a turn to give another try. If this happen again, what do you do? Do you choose another airport or do you try to land the same runway from the opposite direction? What about the fuel? Thanks a lot!
@alex74jenx13 жыл бұрын
I have noticed that you increase engine power quite much during the last turn. Is this done in order to maintain your altitude? I presume you will loose altitude when turning.
@da75767pilot12 жыл бұрын
Just a quick question. Why didn't you use AP with LNAV and level change for altitude with that kind of turbulence? Or do you like to fly manual approaches(of course landing manual by turning of AP) even with allot of turbulence?Or did it just look like allot of turbulence
@GustavoSilva10113 жыл бұрын

@Pegasus1507198915, As far as not land due to weather, a pilot can try to land at the same airport as many times as he/she wants, but if you don't make it after the second time, you probably shouldn't land there at that time. As far as fuel, I know that even smaller planes like Cessnas and Pipers have minimum fuel requirements which are: 1. Enough for your trip 2. Plus to your alternate airport 3. Plus 45 minutes additional flight time I'm not sure what it is in the airlines.

@gustavo87467357 Thanks G, but remember that you have to do whatever it takes to keep that plane flying, if you have to go around then you go around. There is a difference between how you fly and how you instruct, that is why pilots need a lot of hours of PIC time to get that experience before they can get their commercial license. Experience is important for all those little nuances an instructor can not teach someone.

I was driving a truck on a busy highway in Tegucigalpa. A traffic cop stepped in front of me and stopped traffic. Thirty seconds later a full-sized commercial airliner crossed the highway at about 12 feet above the ground to land on a runway behind a chain link fence on my left. Then the cop let traffic resume. Another day in Honduras in 1998. The runway was lengthened before this video.

@Pegasus1507198915 I never use autopilot, especially in the flight sim. General rule about AP's in airliners depend on the airline. Some say it must be on at all times above 3000 feet. Others let their pilots fly up to 10,000, some even 18,000. Otherwise it's up to the pilot when to turn it off. If a pilot wants and the airport offers it, you can autoland the plane. My advice: forget the AP in the sim, just have fun, no one is perfect and you cant get better if you use the AP all the time.
@aviationrocks9 жыл бұрын
VOR [situated on the side of the airport unlike ILS that directs you on the centre-line] only is the tricky part as well as the mountainous terrain.
@bombardierdude1513 жыл бұрын
WHEN WILL YOU MAKE ONE FOR LUKLA?????!!!!!!!!!
@GustavoSilva10113 жыл бұрын
@zeblna2me well, in normal runways it's not bad to have some additional knots during final, but that's a particular case, as it is so short and margin closed, if you fly faster it doesnt leave you a margin to correct it and you maybe not make it, that's what happens in some runway overshoots, a good margin closed example is the SBRJ airport, in the computer you do have time to correct it but in a full scale simulator it becomes impossible, that's why i recommend speed accuracy, safety on top :D

@BorisKnoT whats the program called?
@FSX40412 жыл бұрын
+200 feet is because of the manual flight. You know how hard it is to control the altitude even in Cessna simulators, so instead of +/- 100 feet in real life, you go to +/-200 feet on the simulator. Then because it is a mountainous area "difficult approach with terrain" I said just stay 200 above (in the sim). Of course if you have it on autopilot and VNAV, then you let it be exact. But the AP is for real life, otherwise what's the point of using the sim.
@eddievhfan198411 жыл бұрын
Well, you'd have to go to VNAV for the visual descent part, anyways. But I felt you should've had at least the flight director on w/ LNAV, because that RNP approach requires you to be within .12nm of your approach track (or rather, that's how accurate your navigation equipment needs to be). Hand-flying at those tolerances is kinda difficult, especially in a high-turbulence area like that airport. In short, I'll save the stick for the visual. O_O;

I thought you couldn't make it as you landed just beyond the 2nd taxiway. Nonetheless good approach and landing.

@Retro3433 Thanks, I'm amazed that I even have 1600+ subscribers. I have never once asked anyone to subscribe or even rate my videos. I figured that if people liked what they saw, they'd subscribe. Not only in increasing my knowledge of aviation and simulated experience, but also in trying to learn how to teach aviation. Something I will be doing for real very shortly.
@GustavoSilva10113 жыл бұрын
@emelianenkoo it's all about human factor, in the computer you have all the instruments right in front of you and at a FFS you need to look at different things and move your head to look at the things, and you loose time when looking at things, miliseconds, but the difference between a safe touchdown and a crash is at a fraction of a second

There are some glitches and a bad landing, yes, but a 90 degrees turn and landing it's insane in a desktop f-sim with only one monitor. To reduce the workload, I prefer to keep the speed managed all the way down the RNAV track (A/THR engaged). It is your option to use the AP either, but keeping the track is easy, and as for descent you may step descent, instead of chasing the trend bar, which can be tricky. As well, you may prefer to have ac fully configured in advance, so for the final turn to focus only on hitting the runway in the right spot. Better start turning earlier and not overshooting. And that's quite easy. Which is not easy is to stay on the proper descent path without having the runway and PAPI bars in sight until the last moment. Usually, in this minimal FS configuration, each landing at Toncontin, Kai Tak, Madeira, Innsbruck 08 etc. ends in a final desperate dive into the piano-keys followed by an even more desperate try to arrest the descent and avoid a crash :-))) (For those committed just to land fast at MHTG, I recommend the VOR 02 procedure - nice and easy)

You did that steep final turn a bit (maybe 2-3 seconds!) too late, and once you did it you came too high, so you had to spend half of that pretty short runway loosing height and flaring, flaaaring - but it's not Heathrow! it's like Paro, you must make quick positive touchdown and use the rest of the runway for safe deceleration.
