Really shocked Bo Jackson isn't on this list. He was both power and speed in One package. We sadly will never know how good he might have been if he only played One sport but unlike almost anyone else he actually was really good at baseball and great as a running back. In the days when running the ball was the priority of offenses ,he played FB like he was a middle LB .! Earl Campbell is without a doubt the toughest running back ever. The highest character of any mentioned in this video. As a rookie he took the Oilers from last to first place in their division with no other roster changes. A real american hero and an official Texas Legend. What A MAN!

Probably my favorite single running play of all time.... maybe against the cowboys? It's a ho hum run of the mill godzilla destroying highrises esque run for a modest gain until he decides to absolutely murder some poor db with the most irreverent truck/spear I've ever seen. I don't know that poor fellas name but if you told me he died shortly thereafter I wouldn't be shocked. Human being shouldn't be able to generate the kind of power that man could. He is paying for it dearly these days. When knees go bad life tends to follow suit. Agreed. I am a Texas also so perhaps a little biased. But many former LB's said they feared tackling him more than anyone else. He batterd defenses. He did this without a great OL and the Oilers were not a great passing team. They were probably average in that department. They had a good QB and one good receiver as I recall. But Campbell was their offense. They came within one controversial call to making the Superbowl one year.

The terms weren't used loosely back then, they are used incorrectly now. Like to the point that its essentially useless to even try to correct or educate anyone (what's the point anyway?). Back then though the designations you were given (QB, HB, FB) directly correlated to the position you lined up at before the snap. The quarterback was in front of the half back and the half back was in front of the full back. They didnt use the terms loosely at all. At some point the fullback designation starting being used for the half back who traditionally was involved heavily in pass pro and used as a lead blocker/primary runner in short yardage situations. I dont like when people call todays running backs HBs but honestly it's such a small gripe that I cant even believe I've spent this much time typing this out. Figured it beats staring at the bathroom wall while taking a poop.... which could honestly use a couple coats of fresh paint now that I'm looking at it.

@@lushiiiiii Barry was the most agile RB ever. Nobody will ever have his moves. But though he had power for sure, that wasn't what made him great. He's not one of the greatest power backs, though he IS the greatest evasive back. Probably the most fun to watch running back of all time. Earl Campbell is the greatest power back IMO, but also was extremely fast in the open field and possibly the most beautiful runner with regard to body mechanics and balance of all running backs. There's an Earl Campbell Top Ten highlight video here on YT. I think it's #4 where he's hit multiple times and finally the ninth guy takes him down - his most amazing power run IMO. And #1 shows his famous run where he batters his way getting mauled to the point where his jersey is torn off. Not just some of his jersey, but his whole jersey is shredded off and he's wearing just shoulder pads as he walks to the sidelines to get a new jersey. Different than Barry Sanders. Both the very best at their style of play.

No way. Brown is so overrated as a power back. He had genius level skills in traffic. Similar to Warrick Dunn. The way he leveraged his body with angles and twists. But the commentator is drunk. Brown evaded most defenders, and most of the rest seemed to not know how to tackle. Today brown might be cut. And Earl Campbell was one of the best Tailbacks in history. He ran a 9.6. Had great vision and elusive skills. He would be all pro at 200 lbs

My main gripe with not handing the ball off to Lynch is, I get it you don't want to be too predictable, and even the best back still get tackled... but how could you not at the very least run a play action, just to get the defense to jump a little and give your receivers a slightly better chance at being open for a TD. Yes they should have handed the ball off, and everyone was expecting it, and yet you can't even fake it which would have helped.

His numbers were better in the USFL, sure, but he wasn't playing the same talent. He was just as great in the NFL, rushing and receiving, his first stint with the cowboys in particular. If he wasn't that great than the cowboys would have never been able to pull of the greatest trade of all-time that lead to their 90's dynasty. No matter how you slice it, he should be on the list.

Jim Brown was great for his time but he played when defensive linemen were much smaller. At 230 lbs. and 6’ 2” he was as big as most of them. So unlike many of the other power backs whose opposing linemen average 280 and up just maybe he shouldn’t be number one on this list.

Wrong. He played as late as 1965. You people act like he played 300 years ago. He was not as big as most of the DL. In fact there were 300 lbs DL before he even played. As I have said a zillian times on these forums he was both bigger and faster than W. Payton & E. Smith. A. Peterson was under 230 lbs, E. Campbell was at 230 & Csonka was about 235. Now explain to me how JB would not have been superior to all those guys when they played.

Many props!! Great list. There are some coaches who totally think outside the box. Bum Phillips once tried to get Riggins as Campbell's blocking/ number two back. Also, if I remember correctly, it wasn't so much his record, it was that Brown thought Harris was soft.

Not sure why AP isn't on the lost. Dude was the most versatile runner I have ever seen. Agility with the best of them, breakaway speed like nobody else in the league at the time besides maybe CJ2K, and literally steam rolled guys like Jerome Bettis. I don't think a single defensive coordinator for an 8 year stretch went into Minnesota with any sleep from 2007-2015.

I recall seeing Jack Tatum hit Earl Campbell at full tilt. All the hit did was straighten Campbell up. Campbell stuck out an arm, grabbed Tatum, and threw him out of bounds. Continued with his run. I think Marion Motley deserves a place on this list.
