Perfume preference is very personal - and each person's chemistry changes it, so what you love on someone else may smell awful on you. I desperately wish I could find my favorite OLD scents ( BEFORE they were secretly "updated")
@oseasviewer7108
@oseasviewer7108 4 ай бұрын
Fragrance is no longer manufactured using natural components - the bulk of fragrances are wholly synthetic produced by a group called International Flavours and & Fragrances. (They produce all the smells one associates with cleaning products the fragrance in cosmetics, hygiene & personal care products and flavourings used in food manufacturing). They produce the so called raw materials that locations like Grasse in the south of France use to formulate the house brand perfume releases. A team of 'noses' as they are called will create the fragrance commissioned by a luxury brand. Because of cost there are a great deal of substitutions in the formulations therefore old favourites will inevitably change due to cost and focus on profit margin. More often than not the bottle is more expensive than the fragrance.

Locating old formulas will be difficult and also because time is never kind to natural ingredients. Instead seek out new experiences - recently I sampled a range from Salvatore Ferragamo called Storie de SETA of which there are 4 or 5 themes only 2 had any interest for me - on the skin it's quite light and soothing in its notes profile - worth testing on the skin. Try them on different days but don't commit to buy until the right assembly of notes are there for you.

@cloudyharbour7047
@cloudyharbour7047 Ай бұрын
Old is relative and at 48, I certainly would be offended if someone would label me as middle-aged or old because not only do i look much younger than what you would picture an average end 40ish woman but truth is, more and more women do look and and dress timeless. When you can pull that off, you should also go cor your own signature scent which smells best with your body chemistry. You will know what suits you with the one you are most complemented on. Many of the ones she mentioned are rather mainstream yet not "bad" smelling as there is much worse out there. This video doesn't make much sense but old lady style is a far reach. Old fashioned or timeless classy signature scent - you decide. Very weird judgy commentary

Hi Anna, thanks for your review. Just wanted to say that I noticed you often used phrases like 'eww this smells like an old lady.' which implies that to smell like an old lady is a bad thing - that an old lady might smell like lavender, old books and boiled eggs or something). Anyway, maybe the time has come to ditch that line. I'm an 'old lady' and I do not smell like cheese - I'm ekeing out my last few precious drops of Tiempe Passate (Antonia's Flowers), bought for about AU$200 or 300 when it first came out in the 90s!

Just one technical pointer: all of these fragrances were designed--actually, *engineered*--to be used on skin. And part of the excitement of perfume is that it may smell good on you, it may not. I passed a woman in a store wearing something lovely, and I asked her what she was wearing--Good Girl. That made me sad--I know for a fact it doesn't smell like that on me.

Right. Through lots and lots of sampling, I've learned a couple of "rules of thumb" about "parfums" in general: (1) To me, anything by Chanel will smell atrocious on me. (2) To me, anything by Yves Saint Laurent will smell intoxicating on me. I can't say how they smell to anybody else -- I think the only time anybody ever asked me what I was wearing because it smelled good, it was Armani Mania.

I worked for Hermès perfumes and I developped a great taste and love for this beautiful world and for the history of perfumerie. I'm now a collector and I love the rarest perfumes from any olfactive family. Hermès, Guerlain, Sisley and Armani Privé are great houses to start from. I'm kind of sad to see Chanel n°5 was number 1. As someone who has spray all types of perfumes on any person possible, it really depends on the skin. When I spray it on me no 5 has very strong aldehydes, but after a couple of hours, it smells like fresh roses and ppl compliment on me a lot. And it lasts 24 hours so it's worth every penny. Each skin marries each own perfume 🥰, when you love a perfume, the perfume loves you back. And it's a beautiful world to explore if you have an open mind and you let yourself be surprised.

Well, funny thing is that many of these parfumes are rated very high by reviewers, who actually understand the art of perfumery in the first place. It only proves one thing - young girls' noses aren't trained enough to appreciate the more sofisticated smells. I don't think I'm an "old lady" (agreeing with others you should really ditch that phrase), yet I respect many of these perfumes and have them in my collection for an occasional moment. (Poison Dior, Opium YSL, Chanel 5).And yes, I've trained my nose and have been studying perfumes for some time, now. My top #1 will always be Shalimar EDP.

My mother always called Channel No.5 'Corral Number 5'. She utterly hated it and was not shy about announcing her disgust. I turned 20 yrs old in the 80s and Opium was pretty new, I think. It's easy to go overboard with that scent. It seems fairly heavy, even cloying. Shalimar was probably the most popular in the 80s. I never thought Opium smelled like an old lady - for me, that honor belongs to anything by Coty (Emeraude? Introduced in 1921 the same year as Channel No 5.) - but I'm 60, now, so... I find perfumes and their histories very interesting, and wearing historic scents helps the wearer invoke a certain identity for special occasions. My favorite is called 'Jicky' by Guerlain. It dates back to 1889 and was named for the perfumer's mistress. There are hints of musk in it, but I don't find it too heavy - as long as you use it judiciously. Ambergris is an oily/waxy material that comes from the digestive system of sperm whales. Super expensive and highly valued, like most animal-related ingredients - musk notably (especially if it required the death of the animal to obtain), it has been replaced by chemical alternatives. Jeepers, I need to shut up, now.

About 30 years ago a work colleague's boyfriend was a perfumist (he custom made perfumes) and had the gift of extra sensory smell. He could literally walk around a room of 100s of people and tell every person the perfume/after shave, shampoo/conditioner and skin moisturizer they were wearing purely by smell. Not only that he could advise the person what they "should" be wearing based on the emission of natural aroma from their body. He told me that every perfume smells differently on each individual because of how their own body behaves and that to truly appreciate a fragrance, you should spray some on your wrist then go about your normal day for 2-3 hours before you really sense it and then you will know how it really smells on your skin.

Flowers should have been killing us in the wild if aromachemicals were so dangerous. Fragrances have a purpose in nature, fruits smell appealing so we can eat them and propagate their seeds. I wear Beautiful by Estee Lauder, and don't care what anyone says. EVERYTIME I wear it, some man will always stop me and ask what it is. I am 60 and have long hair, and once a man stopped me to smell my hair. You can't make this stuff up. I just wear it on the skin and a tiny amount of the lotion on my hair. Several weeks ago my mother and I went to see a performance and couldn't find a seat. We exited by an usher, and one of them followed me and directed us up the elevator to two lovely seats. I believe this smells differently on everyone. I'm not beautiful, but my perfume is.

Smells are also strongly associated with memories. A good perfume can be hated simply because it’s associated with a bad memory - wether it’s an event or a person 😅 I think this factor adds an important amount of subjectivity to something already so personal. I hope ladies whose perfume ended up on the list don’t feel offended, this is all in good fun. There’s a perfume for everyone, and if we all loved the same one, we’d all smell the same thing and it would be incredibly boring!

I think this channel is a little girl's idea of "elegance "

Yes! I'm 72 years old and there's nothing "old lady" about me. I somehow knew my Chanel No.5 would be in there somewhere but the most hated? For each of the perfumes she's not stopping to think that perfumes are different on everyone. Chanel No. 5 does smell awful on some women. I also don't think that it can be worn by young women. Not age...chemistry!

This review is so interesting in that many of the perfumes you say are "hated by many women" are actually really loved by many women, men and many other reviewers within the perfume community. It's amazing how negative and/or allergic reactions, bad memories and stressful experiences can affect one's overall opinion of a certain fragrance.

I'm 55, and Chanel No 5 is one of my favourites. I didn't like it when I was young because I felt that it was a mature (50+) woman's perfume. These days I feel classy when I wear it. It also reminds me of my late mother as it was one of her favourite perfumes.

I don’t wear any perfume made in America. I lived in New York for a while and what I noticed was that perfume that was manufactured in France had a higher oil content and less alcohol and that the smell was subtly different. I don’t like American Chanel 5 but I adore the scent if it has been made in France. People will stop me on the street and comment about how much they’re enjoying my fragrance. Whenever I go back to Europe, I stock up on my favorites.

Although I'm a bit late to the party, I must say that Baccarat Rouge must NEVER be sprayed on paper. When I first smelt it on a piece of paper I was absolutely disgusted and couldn't understand how someone can like this abhorrent chemical weapon at such an ungodly price. But then I thought of returning to the shop in a month and then sprayed it directly on my skin. And God almighty! the scent started playing out gorgeously. This is a molecular perfume so it plays tricks when on skin. The smell is actually stronger at a distance rather than when you try smelling it directly from the skin. It absolutely needs to mix with your body chemistry to really shine. And it wraps you in a cozy warm and sweet bubble of luxury.

But my worst reaction has undoubtedly been with Obsession. Someone gifted it to my mom, she used just one splash and it gave me a horrible headache to the point I had to vomit. The whole room stunk, thankful my mom didn't like it either and she gave it away. Obesission is a chemical weapon.

The only way to choose a perfume is to spray it on your wrist and walk around for a while. The actual scent depends on your own particular chemistry. Back in the day, the original "Opium" was all the rage. Someone gave me a little bottle. When my husband came home he said I smelled like a funeral parlor. :) Out it went. On the other hand, I tried out the original Elizabeth Arden Red Door (the new one is awful). We'd go to dances or other events, and every man, bar none, who waltzed with me told me I smelled wonderful. It's all about how it smells on you.

There is nothing wrong with classic perfumes. As long as you like the smell that is what matters. Fragrance is not something I go for what's currently in most of the time. Just because it is "in" doesn't mean I like the scent. I wish many weren't discontinued because some I really liked were retired or limited edition and I missed out.

Most modern scents have benzene derivatives to fix the odour . Proper old scents had natural derivatives from the civet cat, musk , known as civetone. Ambergris allows the scent to last longer , in modern scents this has been replaced by a synthetic Ambroxide . Therefore natural scents are very costly . Fashion houses are not perfumiers .

1. spray on the paper from further away 2. spray once 3. wait 20 seconds 4. then smell otherwise you only get top notes and alcohol which is not how the perfume was made... the way you test them of course nothing's gonna smell good... also test 3 max with time in between cause how can you make out the smell properly if every smell just intertwines with one another

The problem with this test is that (1) we can’t sample it with you, we’re relying on words to convey olfactory sensation. (2) scent is very individualistic, a fragrance will smell very differently on each wearer. Also every nose detects it differently, kind of like seeing color, no two people see the same color. (3) perfumes have particulate matter carrying the scent. Those tiny particles get stuck in your nose. So every added scent gets mixed with those that came before, so it’s a compounded scent you’re smelling after multiple samples, and you aren’t actually smelling each fragrance independently. Hey but what do I know, I’m just a smelly old lady who makes her own fragrances using natural perfume oils from Roses, French Violets, Jasmine, Lilac, and several other natural high quality scents from the glorious and diverse plant world.

I wear several of these and Chanel #5 is a classic I've always loved (and worn). Lots of things change the smell of what's in the bottle: different body oil, body heat, what people eat comes out their pores (like garlic or -ick- beer), if a person smokes, if they're diseased, etc. In addition, many people lose some of their sense of smell as they age, and then there's Covid-19 that wreaked havoc on mine. The headaches come from (I believe) the floral based scents vs. vanilla based. The flowers are dried in a cool, dark, damp cellar and they get moldy. So, if you don't do well with mold, avoid flower based scents.

The reason the perfume that was picked as the worst has been so iconic and famous for so long is because a cheeky reporter once asked Marilyn Monroe what she wore to bed. She replied "Chanel No 5". Every female in the world wanted to wear that perfume after she said that. And every man bought it to give to their wives. Personally, I really like the smell. It can be a bit cloying but it is very distinctive and unique. And instantly recognisable. Plus, it's one of the longest lasting fragrances ever made. Dab it on your dress and your dress will retain the smell for two or three days. Would I still wear it today though? No. It's a holdover from a bygone era I'm afraid.
