Its the (not so) subtle comedy of it. Of them being not that good, and doing this somewhat ridiculous performance. Contestants have to agree to whatever lie they want to tell and that includes their family going along. Its really weird. But you notice how the people they recruit from other shows or youtube video stars they have a harder time with the back story and try and lead them to tell one on the auditions? Harder for them to make a back story when anyone can look up the star themselves.
