You are correct. For the people that live in their small community, The Whitaker family is no secret and they are not hiding from anyone. They have lived their lives in one little neck of the holler road and that's what they like (has always been this way). They are not under armed guard or anything like it. The surrounding neighbors and the local Sheriff's Department do provide assistance whenever needed. The Whitaker's are illiterate, some are physically deformed, most all of them are mentally deficit and they can be easily taunted, tormented and taken advantage of because they do not understand anything out of the holler road (and not much there). My sister and first cousin, while not married, were nevertheless living as such. While they had no children, they did research the possibilities and found out that the offspring of such unions aren't necessarily at a risk. They both have college degrees and aren't a couple of ignorant rubes. As a matter of fact, when I was in my teens, his sister and I were quite fond of each other, and would have liked to been more intimate. As things went, we never got past the kissing and petting stage, but circumstances didn't lend themselves to a more intimate relationship.
