Well... I have a kawa Vulcan 500 LTD from 2006 that was abandoned about 4 years in the sun. Bought it and started giving it love without changing ANY of the original parts, just consumables. It's in perfect condition.

The Bandit 1250s engine was not derived from the GSX-R series, that was the earlier oil cooled 1152 engine. The 1250s water cooled engine was an all-new engine designed to meet the then latest Euro emissions legislation.

I don't think so. The only way one of those is going "hundreds of thousands of miles" is if you put it on a plane and do twenty laps of the Earth.

Shaft drives, particularly those from BMW are not an aide to reliability. Quite the opposite.

Really?? I've had 2 BMW bikes over the last 30 yrs and they took me everywhere no problem.....

@@RobertSmith-rr4ztthat’s it dude, you having 2 bikes definitely shows the reliability of BMW. I’m shocked! 🙂

@@RobertSmith-rr4zt If you have a beemer and it's shaft makes it to 30k'ish, i forget the exact mileage, they will replace it FOC. Why would they do that? My GS1200 was good for a year then a money pit for the next two. Never again.
@RobertSmith-rr4ztАй бұрын
@shanestewart4905 well mate I bought an 09 k1300r and I wrung it's neck for a good 10 yrs and the only problem I had was that after a good few hrs of hard riding I had to let her cool down for a bit before starting again. Downgraded to a 9rt after that and thrashed merry hell out of her no problems whatsoever I've had too many bikes to count in my 50+ yrs of riding from tiny 2 stroke terrors to big v twins and all in between. I just loved my beemers because they were the most reliable is all I'm saying.
@shanestewart4905Ай бұрын
@@RobertSmith-rr4zt Fair enough. I loved my 1150 r until a twat totalled it this summer, the state of tune was spot on and not stressing anything too much.That was on 71k when wrote off. My s1000xr is the best bike ive ever owned but importantly, it has no shaft drive and the engine was designed to produce more power than the output it has. Those in the know think bmw stretched the original 1200gs's too far in weight loss and power output to maximise sales after the long way round success of the previous 1150's. I claim 40 years of riding and still think the japs do it best, which is why i love my XR, it's a copy of the classic inline 4 UJM.

@davidmeadows5665 I have a Yamaha 600 Diversion, it is indeed a very comfortable motorcycle but I could not say that it is a sports bike, you have to go up to 6500 rpm to wake up the 4 cylindres pour réveiller la bête

i had a bmw k 1100 for 19 years, drove up to 186.000 km and then threw it away, disgusted because the cylinder head gasket was leaking and a replacement of the gasket would have cost me about 3000 Swiss Francs here in Geneva at the local dealership. Already before, this bike cost me more in maintenance than any of my bmw cars in 40 years. For example, at 90.000 I had to replace the stainless steel exhaust pipe, STAINLESS STEEL, I thought this was meant to last for eternity but the replacement exhaust cost Swiss Francs 1800 (Dollar 2000). On the other hand, engine and gearbox troublefree although I had to add 1 liter of engine oil every 1000 km even when the bike was new. Had to change the disk of the clutch five times the first 100.000 km until I came across a very competent dealer in Hannover, Germany which overhauled the clutch from scratch. There had been internal oil leakage at a bearing from transmission shaft and small quantities oil leaked to the dry clutch disk which became slippery. After the repair of this manufacturing deficiency, no problem with the clutch any longer. Long story cut short: For Christ's sake, no BMW anymore,,,

@@peterschmid8553i also wanted to buy a Bmw K1300R, i liked the design. When i ask the owner about Service Book and if he still have the bills of what he have changed on the bike, The list was Hugeee, and he invested a lot of money in that bike, on parts witch were broken. So i decided not to buy it, it wasn’t reliable at All. After that i started to search more about this model and hell boy, no way K series is reliable! I also had a Gs1200 and i had problems with Abs, so i decided to sell it. Now i own a Versys 1000 and i can say i am happy with it, drove more times through Passes (Stelvio, Timmelsjoch, Gloßglockner and more..) Italy, Austria, Germany, Swiss…without problems and no oil consumption. 68.000km on dashboard..Now i am looking forward to buy the newer model…

I doubt there are statistics to back up what you are saying about these bikes. A lot more reliable bikes are all over the place. For instance the KZ-650 made the scene long before the 1100. It was extremely reliable. Your article should have a headline..."If you want expenses and a very expensive bike look these over." It is a sales pitch that is truly bothersome.
