NHL playoffs 2021 Montreal vs Tampa Bay (actually, all the teams Tampa Bay faced, not just Montreal). Due to a loophole, Tampa Bay was playing with a roster that was $17.3 million over the salary cap. They had players out "injured" and so those players were removed from their salary cap, then by magic or miracle, they were able to play in the playoffs right after those players would be allowed to play and not have their contracts added to the salary cap. So they were able to use a loophole to get an unfair advantage.
@bernardosanchez1821 Жыл бұрын
That’s exploiting a loophole which isn’t cheating, they didn’t break any rules
@natsune09 Жыл бұрын
@@bernardosanchez1821 It is cheating when they had them on the injured list even though they weren't injured to exploit that loop hole
@jonmendelson1104 Жыл бұрын
@@natsune09 Do you have evidence that they weren't injured? I agree that they should adjust the rules but why only mention the 2021 Bolts and not mention all of the other teams that have done similar things. There were 7 other teams over $85M in the 2021 playoffs and the Knights are about $10M over the cap this year. Personally the way I'd set the rule is the 20-man lineup for any playoff game can't go over the salary cap which still gives a bit of leeway but shuts things down a bit. In the case of the 2021 Bolts they were about $1.5M over if you look at things that way which is still too much but significantly less than the $17.3M overall difference. Note: I'm a Sharks fan and don't particularly like or dislike Tampa or Montreal and I hate Vegas.
@natsune09 Жыл бұрын
@@jonmendelson1104 I can't remember the article anymore, but the writer went indepth into how he knew they weren't injured. The majority of his argument was they were proceeding on track with their projected recovery, which would have seen them back on the ice and playing games before the cut off. This projected recovery was matching their actual recovery until they hit the point of them wearing the contact jerseys during practice. That is when the "actual" recovery paused, and stayed that way until the cut off was made, and they recovered as normal. So in short, there recovery proceeded as projected, with a sudden and long pause that conveniently made them pass that cutoff to not count towards the salary cap. I'm sure other teams tried if after them. If the NHL doesn't care, and careers and money are on the line, other teams are going to copy what works.
@jonmendelson1104 Жыл бұрын
@@natsune09 First off, it wasn't just teams copying them, it's been going on for a long time. In 2015 Patrick Kane broke his collarbone and came back from injury in time for the first game of the playoffs and went a point per game and the Hawks had utilized the cap savings from him being on LTIR to pick up other players. Secondly, the timeline for other players who had a similar hip surgery to Kucherov was 5 months and he had his surgery in December and the playoffs started May 15, so it was right in that range. It's possible he might've been healthy enough to play in the last 1 or 2 games of the season but it wasn't that much of a stretch. Third of all, the $17.3M is an extremely inflated number that's only technically accurate. There were a few players who were on LTIR the entire season and continued being on LTIR in the playoffs eating up a sizable chunk of that overage. They only had about $1.5M over the cap in their 20 man lineup at any point during the playoffs. As I said, my solution would be in any given game you can't have more than the salary cap in your lineup. It gives a bit of leeway for TDL deals while still providing some semblance of a cap.

How is the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2021, which is THE most obvious example of daylight manipulation not in this list? Nicholas Snailtifi crashed into the wall and triggered a Safety Car. However, seeing that Max Verstappen was on fresh Softs, race control allowed the cars between Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen to pass the Safety Car, which ultimately gave Verstappen the most undeserved victory, and a season finale to have 2021 forever be known as the worst year for F1 since 1994.

@jonmendelson1104 Жыл бұрын
It's worth noting that both drivers benefitted from questionable decisions throughout the season. Verstappen gained 5 points when they decided to do a second lap behind the safety car so the race at Spa would count for half points instead of nothing, Lewis took Verstappen out of a race earlier in the year and got a small penalty and still ended up winning the race then the very next race Bottas crashed into Verstappen but he managed to recover to a decent result. The decision in Abu Dhabi was also questionable but you can't just look at one questionable decision in a vacuum and come to the conclusion that they were biased against Lewis when he benefitted from some of the others.
