I would have to go with Icheb. Not only was he betrayed by his parents in an attempt to infect the Borg, but he was betrayed by his parents in an attempt to infect the Borg TWICE. Thankfully Voyager was able to rescue him...only for one of the most gruesome on-screen deaths in little more than a cameo used to advance Seven's story.

He accepted his fate for both Spock and the Romulan war. He knew he wasn't suppose to be in command during the conflict with Spock being critically injured, future Pike also stated no matter what the outcome was, someone else would pay the price implying that there would be others beside Spock who would be in danger.

If one thinks about it, Picard has suffered A LOT. He was born with Shalafts syndrome that made him have superhuman hearing which caused him agony, his mom went cray cray and killed herself, he was estranged from his father and brother, he got stabbed in the frickin' heart, lost his best friend Jack, was secretly in love with his BFF's wife, he was assimilated by the Borg and was gifted with Irumodic syndrome, an entire lifetime's worth of memories were uploaded to his brain and all he got from it was flute-playing skills, he lost two daughter figures in Sito Jaxa and Ro Laren, was tortured by the Cardassians, was cloned by Romulans, his only biological family died in a fire, he himself died from Irumodic syndrome and resurrected as a golem, learned he had a son who turned out to be the new Borg collective/locus, and a few more that I may have missed. O'Brien's suffering pales in comparison's to Picard.

Garek became Ambassador to the Federation and eventually President of Cardassia, he found a nice partner to share his days and likely nights with, so I don't think he belongs on the list. its fairly common knowledge that actors get recast in different roles within the Star Trek franchise. Vaughn Strong for example played 12 characters, between 28 episodes, over 4 star trek series. in one episode he plays Admiral Forrest and a Suliban in the same episode. or Jeffrey Combs who played more than one ferengi among several other reoccuring characters. Tim Russ is another example.

He was my first thought! Before we ever see him he was a frontline soldier fighting the Cardassians. That's a fairly rare perspective in Star Trek/Starfleet. Also, his wife was messed with multiple times, nearly lost a pregnancy, the POW issues, lotta stuff.
@Yasuda9000 Жыл бұрын
Miles O'Brian was in prison for 20 years in his mind, not for real. He was only in this "prison sentence" for an hour or a few hours (I forgot which), but it still messed him up during that time.
@JaysonStork Жыл бұрын
The torture of Miles for so many years definitely needed to be included. His experience is similar to Picard's lost life/wife/children as far as real time/experienced time, but the idea that O'Brian was in anguish for so long places it as number one in my "history of trek trauma"
@_Omega_Weapon Жыл бұрын

Worf was also put through it over the run of TNG and DS9. Murdered parents, raised on Earth by humans, surprise brother, surprise son, family accused of dishonor, discommendation, his mate murdered, totally unacknowledged by his homeworld, paralyzed and wanted to end it, seeing future Alexander die, spouse murdered again. I could go on with specifics.

Matt Decker. From what Kirk says they were probably friends and very posdibly Decker had been a mentor to Kirk after Captain Garrovic death. As Kirk said he was the best of us. Decker trying to save his crew from a dying ship only to have the doomsday device eat the planet while Decker listens to their cries. Days 12:44 later he is found by Kirk a shattered wreck . In his log entry you hear the commander he had been.

The whole Q Continuum are pretty tragic. Sure, being immortal and having godlike powers sounds fun but it also means that they'll have to watch all mortals age and die. They've probably seen the end of countless civilizations. And once they've been around for a few billion years, they've done just about everything that could be done and have to exist in a state of boredom and tedium for the rest of eternity.
@Progger11 Жыл бұрын
*potential spoilers* The Q members do seem to be "mortal" in a sense because we see Q's death at one point... But he's also still alive at the same time because his native existence is outside of our concept of space-time, so he's a non-linear being. So, he dies in Picard's linear experience of him, but he's also still alive... It's wild. So, the Q are similar to The Prophets, except they can actually manifest in physical forms and enter linear space-time when they wish. Hence why they can "die" in those forms but also still reappear.

I think Lwaxana Troi (forgive me if I misspelled it, I've taken my night time tablets. Does bugger all for my memory lol) should be on the list. She lost her daughter and husband, she fell in love only to end up accompanying him to be with him as he committed suicide, and had rotten luck with men in general. Initially I found her annoying but as she was given more back story, and by the time she ended up stuck in the lift with Odo on DS9, I really started to feel sorry for her.

I'd actually nominate Garak too. He went through a lot both before and during DS9. After having spent so many years in exile, he's last seen returned to his homeworld but it's left in ruins, most of his people massacred and his supposed mother, Mila, is shot dead by Jem'Hadar. While novels and unofficial plays have had Garak leading the Cardassians and helping rebuild it, it's still a tragic end for him on the TV show.

Icheb was a tragic character. From his parents' attempt to sacrifice him - twice - to being assimilated, then disconnected and abandoned by the hive. He struggled to adapt to a human lifestyle aboard Voyager almost as much as Seven. His mini-hive of other former-child-drones was broken up and spread across the quadrant. And finally, he was eventually captured, tortured and left for dead, with Seven finally ending his suffering.

How about Arturis? He was the alien in the Season 4 episode 26 “Hope and Fear”(Voyager). He disguised his ship as an experimental Starfleet vessel, equipped with quantum slipstream technology and planned to lure the Voyager crew aboard to deliver them to the Borg. Yes, he was the villain of the week, but he was a tragic figure, having lost his home planet and what seemed like a rich culture. He also had a point. The Voyager crew, in their own rather selfish pursuit of crossing the galaxy at any cost, had helped the Borg defend themselves against Specie 8472, which had offered others a glimmer of hope that the Borg could be defeated. Sure 8472 were probably going to pick fights with everyone else, but Arturis’ point does reflect the larger issue that Voyager had cut a swathe through the quadrant, getting involved all over the place and leaving a bit of a mess in its wake. There’s also Miles O’Brien, who goes through hell in every episode he’s the focus of. From The Storyteller to Hard Time to that one where…..well I haven’t time to list them all. The man’s been through a lot.

I watched Half a Life yesterday and, though I knew the story, the performance of Majel as Lwaxana as she tries to convince Timicin to not follow through with the Resoltion, and David Ogden Stiers as Timicin was frankly heartbreaking. I'll admit the most I saw of Stiers was as Charles Winchester III in MASH, which was not the most flattering of characters to be remembered as, and it breaks my heart that most of his later work appears to be voice overs in games I do not play or TV shows I no longer watch since my kids got older. I know he was in Doc Hollywood, had a guest role in an episode of Frasier, and was in the first season of Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place; I just wish there was more where you can see him in play the role. He was definitely one of the most underrated master actors of the last 50 years.

Tuvix is disappointed by your lack of acknowledgement. But I will throw a curve ball. Q-uinn. So bored to tears he literally wanted to die only to have his own people turn on him and force him into a solitary confinement prison for 300 years which if he was bored and wanted to die before being imprisoned could you imagine 300 years in the equivalent of a tiny bedroom with no company, no contact with the outside universe. Forgotten, abandoned and left to live forever by his own kind. Ultimately the most tragic part is to have all the power of the Q's omnipotence only to grow tired of seeing the most bizarre and profane things existence has to offer. It reminds me of Seven's toast for Mirelle Paris. May she meet all her goals save for one so she would always have something to strive for. Q-uinn had so wrung out all the mystery of existence there was nothing left to strive for but death and that is a bleak story.

I disagree with your placement of Aamin Marritza. I had to re watch the episode to be certain. That DS9 episode was so memorable. I actually remember the evening it premiered. It's due to Nana Visitor and Harris Yulin. I'm guessing why the name of episode is "Duet". 1st time watching it, I was enthralled by the performances of these actors. The twist hit me hard. A person that wants to take on everyone else's sins for redemption. It's a different kind of courage but the sorrow he expressed at his cowardice for not taking stand. I shared it. It was important for Kira, too. Not to allow horrors of the past to haunt her present. It should've been number 2. Just saying.

I'd like to see a "Top 10 Most Hypocritical Starfleet/Federation Actions". For example, the Federation and Star Fleet are (supposedly) all about respecting the religious and cultural practices of its members. But Riker forces Ensign Ro to remove her earring because it's "against the uniform code", and multiple Starfleet Captains refuse to allow Klingon ritual suicide. Sisko even tells Worf that if Worf honors his brother's request for an honorable death, he will consider it murder. There's more than just this (could probably do a top 10 list using just the Maquis). Section 31, the "Badmirals", any Enterprise crew condemning anyone else for ignoring the Prime Directive, etc.

He was innocent of any crime except that of existing. And update--Ro Laren who died for Starfleet and the crew of the Titan. Who researches this stuff???

Worf himself lost a lot. But he always kept his self respect. He lost his biological parents, his brothers, his wives, plenty of friends... Kirk may have had his triumphs but he and Picard lost out on family.

Some people were just trapped in their fate. Yar and Pike had more than one chance to get out and live Others are denied mercy, Merritza, and Kira finally found a Cardassian she could forgive. On the up side it made it possible for her to forgive others and even call some of them friends.

This may have been mentioned but Icheb had a pretty tragic story. Even though he and the other “borg children” were successfully saved by Seven and the crew of Voyager, his later revealed death in Picard’s first season was absolutely brutal and heart wrenching.

Sito Jaxa from TNG

I feel like we have to include Beckett Mariner on a second list. After all, she had the potential to become a great captain... only to end up losing her role model Sito Jaxa AND get broken down by the Dominion War, to the point where she couldn't stomach the idea of sending anyone under her command to their deaths. Little wonder as to why she kept seeking self-destruction, just to avoid that pain. And it's only NOW that she's taking steps toward healing, starting with fully accepting her promotion to Lt. JG.

Damar is even more tragic if you account for what happened after the chili dogs and root beer.

Damar. They never did find his secret mountain hideaway. Long may his legend live in the hearts and minds of all free Cardassians.

Lwaxana Troi experienced the death of her oldest daughter. Picard the deaths of his brother and nephew. McCoy the death of his father and pulled his life support only to find a cure a year later.

I have the solution to Captain Pike's fait. In that episode they claimed because he survived, which no longer put Captain Kirk as the Enterprise captain. So the outcome in the Episode Captain Kirk successfully defeated the Romulans wouldn't have happened. Solution: Send the letter as he intended. Then on the day of the accident, he retires from Star Fleet and requests James T Kirk take over the ship. COMTRAYA! Everything is better. 😁😁

I’m surprised Miles O’Brien isn’t on the list. That character was a pin cushion for the writers.

I think Worf suffered a lot & should’ve been on this list close to number one. Think about his story being raised by people who could never truly understand him or the customs of his people, the psychological turmoil he must’ve endured being the first Klingon to serve in Starfleet, how he had a beautiful & peaceful relationship with Deanna Troi disappear with no explanation (on the show or in the films) so it could make room for her to be with Riker, how he found love again & married the dope as hell Jadzia Dax only for her to be killed off by Gul Dukat (my favorite villain) like she was a background character & then replaced with an inferior garbage character, Ezra Dax, who shouldn’t have even been allowed to serve on Deep Space Nine (I hate that character soooo much & how the writers kept focusing on her for the last season of DS9. Such a waste). Oh no, folks, Worf SUFFERED & what’s even worse is that people made it seem like it was HIS fault. Like his pain was invalid. Don’t believe me? Do yourself a favor & watch all of Worf’s episodes again. The Star Trek writers did my man dirty.

Agreed. Definitely one of the most tortured characters in Trek.

There should be an opposite list for the most well off characters. Also, all 3 Borg Queens had tragic endings. Died before they could unite the entire universe. 😢

Oh, ya left out Marla McGiver's horrible death. The same parasite that Khan dropped into Chekhov's and Terrell's ears ... Khan said that it killed 20 of his people, including his "beloved wife" -- implicitly, Marla. She died suffering and insane. For a bookish history buff to die like that ... tragic.
