Underrated Tom Hanks performance... “The Money Pit”
@Jeremy-f3s2 ай бұрын
I've seen all of Hanks 80s films, if you want an undiscovered gem try the man with one red shoe from 84 before he was on people's radar, it's a remake of a French film but it features a scantily clad Carrie Fisher at one point which is reason alone to watch it if you haven't already.
@abegarfield70302 ай бұрын
Both good movies. I recommend 1986's Nothing in common. Not only a good performance by Hanks but also a spectacular performance by Jackie Gleason.
@Jeremy-f3s2 ай бұрын
@@abegarfield7030 I forgot about that one. I decided one day to watch Hanks' career right through since he seems to be America's most popular actor with only Tom Cruise being possibly more loved. So that's why I've seen all his 80s films but I'm stopped at Toy Story which I haven't actually seen and can't find cheaply on streaming which is why I'm stuck there but going through an actor's full career whether good films or bad really shows you the breadth of work they do, I never would've seen The Man with the Red Shoe or Nothing in Common if I hadn't decided to systematically go through his career chronologically. He's also interesting cos he kinda got stuck with comedy alot as a young man (That Happy Days episode followed by Bosom Buddies) til he did Forest Gump and then everyone seemed to realise he could do drama well and that's when his trajectory changed. But as you pointed out, there are films there during the 80s that show he was perfectly suited for drama like the 86 drama Everytime We Say Goodbye or 88s Punchline which is where he first worked with Sally Field.

Add the end of Mary Poppins Returns, Angela Lansbury appears as the balloon woman in the park. This part had originally been meant for Julie Andrews, but she turned down the part because she didn't want to detract from Emily Blunt's performance as Mary Poppins. Interestingly, Lansbury was in consideration to play Mary Poppins in the original movie before Andrews was cast.

Beverly Hills Cop 3 initial concept was it would be a third outing for both Axel Foley and, of all characters, Crocodile Dundee. If you look at certain scenes in Beverly Hills Cop 3, eg the one with Foley jumping all over the ferris wheel, you can see traces that some scenes were written for Dundee instead of Foley. True story.

As bizarre a concept as that is, it explains why BHC3 doesn't feel like it's part of the movie series. Axel and Mick are both great characters but I really can't see a crossover working.

The Driver (1978), by Walter Hill, was made with Steve McQueen in mind as the title character based on his performance in other car-oriented action classics, Bullitt (1968) and The Getaway (1972), but McQueen turned it down and Ryan O'Neal took the role instead. It still became a classic, and O'Neal was great, but you can certainly see how the role was initially meant to be a Steve McQueen role.

This wasn't on your list, and is totally guesswork on my part, but in 1963 Stanley Donen directed "Charade" starring Cary Grant, and in 1966 "Arabesque" starring Gregory Peck. Peck's lines in that movie totally sound like they were written for Grant to deliver in his suave, insouciant style - but coming out of Peck they just felt...wrong. I suspect Donen wanted Grant to star in this second film, but when Grant turned it down he cast Peck in his place - without bothering to rewrite the script.
