I live in Puerto Rico where, I guess you already know that, we recently had an island-wide blackout that lasted a couple of days. We learned to be better prepared for blackouts after Hurricane Maria, so we didn't have it so bad. The first layer of things I always have handy are cheap flashlights, portable am/fm radios, batteries, a small propane tank, portable propane stove, dried/canned foods, boxes of bottled water and functioning charger outlets in my cars. With this we held off the few days that the blackouts lasted with no problems. In the second tier I have a gas generator, 5 gallon gas jugs with 0 ethanol fuel and as many 5 gallon water jugs as I can store. I don't like turning on the generator as soon as the light goes off. I'd rather wait a few hours in order to stretch out my resources. I also keep open top plastic boxes that I use to collect rain water in the event that the running water was also out. This water is used to flush toilets and mop floors so I can leave the water jugs for bathing and cleansing kitchen utensils. With this set up we can go for a few weeks as long as the chains of supply for food and gasoline do not break. If you have never experienced a blackout that has lasted more than a month I will tell you that the ill prepared, infants and the elderly suffer greatly. If you can, at least, cover that first tier of items you will put yourself in a good position to come up with a longer term plan.

Uniheat packs are used for shipping reptile, plant and other living thing in the cold. They max at 100f and come in hour packs of 24-96 hours. I keep for my reptiles, people can use them too. Heat dry rice on a camping stove fill socks. I love Walmart brand tea lights, unscented and $5.00 for 100, that's up to 300 hours depending on how many you burn. Buy stainless steel scrubbers run one in wick through and put in 4oz canning jars and fill with olive oil, oil candles.

Seek lighting through crisco shorting, 64oz mason jar, long taper candle and you gave yourself a light for days. Glow sticks, glow stick in a gallon jug of water, lights the darkness really well. One of my light options (and other) is Harbor freight pop up/push down LED 360 degree light. Very bright, compact light about the size of a beer can. Runs on 3 AA batteries. I have rechargeable batteries and a means of using solar to recharge those batteries. Turns on by pulling up on the top to expose the LED module. Shuts off by pushing the top down. Self standing or use the metal wire loop to hang it.

You can get CB RADIOS, Bophane radios, can do HAM, but does Family Radio Service! No license required!
@winstonsmiths244929 күн бұрын
GMRS radios give you more distance and you MIGHT have repeaters for GMRS in you area. License is required but it is cheap and the entire family can use one license, and it is good for 10 years. But any comm is better than nothing. Even if it is just for use around you property, that is still helpful. Get radios that can be charge via USB and batteries do not have to be disconnected from the radio. Download videos that instruct you how to use them. Of course it is better to know ahead of time, but a library of instructional videos will be handy.

Eat steak instead of cold protein bars. Invite lady friend over for dinner. Have a couple bottles of wine put back. 5. Have a solar generator- always have ability to charge phone and watch tv - she might want to watch a movie. 6. Have candles on hand - you might get lucky after the movie. 7. Have boo boo kit in case she breaks a nail. 8. Work out. Healthy lifestyle. Will help with #6. 9. Hypothermia? See #1. 10. Don’t get the jab. Helps with #8. 11. Keep cash on hand in case you need to hike to store because you did not listen to #4. 12. Have self defense item. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. 13.
