You can really see that it is a US channel. Unfortunately, most of the really good master system games are not named that way, because EU only. the master system was extremely strong in europe in the early 90's, and the games that came out at that time were on a completely different level technically and in terms of gameplay, than the 80's master system games. Closer to 16 bit Genesis games than NES games. If you are impressed by R Type, you should take a look at Power Strike 2, for example

Still a shitty list of mediocre games. R-Type and Quartet aren't even worth mentioning, considering the great games that exist. Muricans just suck.

Phantasy Star is the crown jewel of the Master System, and one game that is absolutely superior to its NES counterparts, Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior. Graphically, narratively, artistically, it's just so fully realized. Even the music beats out Uematsu's first FF soundtrack. It would take until the SNES for any Final Fantasy game to equal it. Give it a shot with the Sega Ages: Phantasy Star release on Switch. You won't regret it.

@jeanbob1481

Good choice, there are twice as many levels on the japanese game. Even the ending of the game is weirdly philosophical, you just gotta love the Master System. Here is the script : “Enduro” is a symbolic journey through life via the media of a race. The results are insignificant and what really counts is competing. Of particular importance are the lessons to be learned concerning one’s self from the various encounters you experience along the way. There is no victor or loser in this test of endurance. The only thing that really matters is that you make a commitment to begin the long and trying trek. This game is then dedicated to all of the “life riders” who have started out on the solitary trip to find their own individual limits. Last, but not least, may we sincerely congratulate you on a perfect run.

Hey, long-time Sega fan here! My brother and I also got a Master System for Christmas instead of an NES, at my insistent pleading. Loved the list! All solid choices. I second your Golvellius, Rambo II, Phantasy Star, and Wonder Boy II and III picks. I probably would also have Double Dragon (another 2-player simultaneous romp), Rastan, and Kenseiden on the list, but I admit those picks may be colored by nostalgia. The other one I’d argue for inclusion would be Y’s. It was my first experience with an action RPG, and those tunes are forever burned into my mind (thank you Yuzo Koshiro and Tokuhiko Uwabo and Izuho Nomata). One minor “um, actually” about the video is that the SMS was more powerful than the NES in every facet except sound. Even though I have a soft spot for those SMS square channels, I have to admit it’s objectively outclassed by the NES’ chip. The FM add-on is nice, but we didn’t get to see that here.

Excellent vid! Very polished! I feel a little fish-out-of-water here just because I didn't have access to Segas growing up. I saw the ads and wanted to play the games, but I didn't know anyone who owned one, so it was just the NES for me. I like that you guys didn't just retread over the classics, but looked deep for some games not everyone has heard of or played. I definitely gamed in that era though, so I am still envious of how good Sega titles looked compared to many I played on the NES.

I got both my Nes and Master System in 1986 (divorced parents). I loved them both but my Master System was king...whenever I could find new games for it. What really pushed me over the edge into Sega super fandom was the Genesis in 1989. Of course that was helped greatly by a Powerbase Converter and a copy of Phantasy Star. I actually played them both for the very first time back-to-back in early 1990. Incredible video guys! Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Addendum- Where is Rastan? Best Master System lists must contain Rastan! :)

@@TigerChainsawVideoGames You my friend are going to love Rastan. It does what R-Type did for the shmup genre on the Master System. This reminds me of something that happened during my childhood. Now, I don't remember the year but it was during the 3rd generation... So in Elementary school I had two very good friends with extremely different tastes. One was a Nintendo diehard fanboy (in the traditional sense) and the other was a huge Atari guy. I was in the middle as I had both the Master System and Nes (divorced parents+ medical disability). I was always cool with the Nes but the Master System felt special. My two friends would make fun of the Master System because too them it lacked big games like the Nes (had everything) and Atari (classics). At the time Rastan was pretty big in the arcades and when I saw it advertised in a Toys R' Us catalog I had to have it. After getting the game I called the two over to "hangout" and maybe play some Sega games. I waited for them both to arrive before playing Rastan... When they both were in my room the "Why can't we play Nintendo..." nonsense immediately started. I said okay but there's something I want to check out first. I slyly wrapped the cart in my hands and popped it into my Master System and their response was pure gold. "Rastan is on the Master System?! Can I play first?!" Nope. I played until they admitted the Master System was an "amazing, great, incredible, bestest ever console they had ever witnessed" then I shared. We played that game so much that my label became damaged and I don't care as it gave it character. ;) Once again, excellent video!

I think Quartet has the best soundtrack of the whole 8-bit era. The jazzy solo in the stage 2 music -- that stuck with me for decades; it's meaningful to me. Stage 4's music brings the funk hard, and it blows my mind that the composer had the panache to create that drum solo out of nothing but white noise. When I recently picked up a Sega Master System, having lost mine from childhood close to 30 years ago, Quartet was the first game I bought.

Dude, Tiger - FANTASTIC editing in this one! This is documentary caliber work! The cuts to ‘B Roll’ shots mixed in with shots of gameplay backed with the voiceover from MyLifeInGaming was expertly done! You should be proud! As far as a Sega MasterSystem…I actually have never heard of it before until I started doing KZbin here. I was a Nintendo kid. While the games and graphics look fairly decent, what the HELL were they thinking with that cover art? That stupid grid work on every box (while quickly identifiable as a MasterSystem game) looks f**king HORRENDOUS from a graphic design perspective. 😂 It kind of makes you wonder what they were thinking back then. Even the button layout on the system itself was like, “Sh*t, guys…shouldn’t we try to make it the SLIGHTEST bit nice?” 😅 Awesome stuff, Tiger! Great work putting together this collab! 🤘

One of my best childhood memories was during our school summer holidays. My brother and I were both bored and my dad asked what would help. My brother and I both said a games console and to our absolute amazement our dad drove us to Spa computer center in Leamington Spa U.K and asked us to pick a console and 2 games. We got the master system, R-type & Wonder boy. That console gave us pleasure for years. I still have no idea why he did that as we were not spoilt children and money didn't grow on trees in our house... maybe he did it just to put a smile on our faces 🙂.

@@TigerChainsawVideoGames The NES port of 3 is pretty good, 4 takes a few liberties but is decent. 5 is an absolute travesty. Wonderboy III alone is worth owning a Master System to me. There's even a remastered version available from a few years ago for PC and I think some consoles that lets you swap back and forth in real time between new hand-drawn graphics and new covers of the original music or either combo of those 2. Just as fun today as it was a million years ago.

Rastan, Black Belt, Enduro Racer, Action Fighter are some including many in your list are in my top 10, I started with a Master System in 1987 as my first home console. Bought with money I had earned babysitting. It was $86.36 at KB toys in the Burnsville Minnesota Mall. Everyone had an NES around me, friends, relatives ect. One good friend had me over to try his master system , I knew then I liked it best. However games like Contra, Castlevania, Metroid, Super Mario made my decision tough. I got a used NES bundle at a great price with those games and a few more in 1989 before the Genesis came out. Rainy day & snow days were alot of fun for me growing up. Nice video, brought back a lot of great memories, thanks!

6:02 It wasn’t until years after my Sega Master System and my copy of Zillion were a distant memory that one of my cousins pointed out to me that all of the weird symbols that I had come up with crazy names for to remember them (heart, bug, eye, lock, double lock etc…) were actually just the numerals 1 - 9 (plus 0) mostly just mirrored vertically 😭😭😭…

Interesting list! I made a top 20 video series for the Master System and I also liked Zillion, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, WB3 Dragon's Trap and R-Type enough to add them to my list. Some of the non-US titles really dazzled, including the super impressive BUBBLE BOBBLE and MASTER OF DARKNESS.

You mentioned in the start of the video that the master system has 117 games. I have a complete set of every north American release which by my count is 115 games, this does not include misprints or blue label variants (minus Shinobi world and slapshot) do you have a list of the other two games?(are you counting misprint monopoly and super wonderboy)?
@TigerChainsawVideoGames
@TigerChainsawVideoGames Жыл бұрын
Excellent question! Super cool you have a complete set, I'm very jealous. Here's how I got to 117 games.... and by all means I could be wrong (I hope I'm not....but perhaps I am) Wikipedia says there was 312 total games released for the Master System. 15 of them were released only in Japan. 312 - 15 = 297. 22 were released only in Brazil. 297 - 22 = 275. 158 were released only in PAL regions. 275 - 158 = 117. So therefore, 117 games were released in North America. I hope my math is correct (or wikipedia is correct!) Thanks for commenting and watching.

@@TigerChainsawVideoGames thanks for responding! I went through Wikipedia after my response. And I went down the list looking at my north American master system games. Nothing seemed too out of the ordinary and all my games seemed to check out as I went down the list , the weird one was snail maze which is a built in game for og master system which some may not count. The other thing I noticed they had hang on listed as a solitary game in the US these are dual carts, hang on/astro warrior - hangon/safari hunt, so I guess if you add these games it would bring you to 117- w/ 114 carts/cards total plus snail maze if you have a master system 1 this 115. Mystery solved. That was fun. Thanks for inspiring another look at the collection. Great video and I subbed. Salute!

@@hiphopheadspodcast Of course! Always happy to discuss Master System knowledge and input with a fellow gamer. Still can't believe you have a full set, what a cool accomplishment. (Also, I do love SnailMaze. I used to play it a ton as a kid) I'm glad we were able to solve the mystery. Happy gaming!

In Australia we didn’t really see the SMS, but we did see SEGA Master System II with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in. Good for Christmas where parents could buy the system and get an excellent game to play right out the box without a game cartridge so it was good to go!

Nice video. When I was a kid my brother and I begged our parents for a Nintendo. My dad brings home a Sega Mastersystem, needless to say 8 year old me was so disappointed. This wasn't a Nintendo! I soon fell in love with the system and had and played many of the games you had in this video. Got mocked and made fun of by my friends for not having a Nintendo but I didn't care, I became a Sega backer at that point and always defended the system vs the Nintendo.

Haha, it's funny how kids were initially disappointed but once they got their hands on the SMS they found out how great it was. Your dad is a cool one! I had a Master System for a very long time until we finally upgraded to the PS1 so it holds a special place in my heart. Thanks for watching!

I'm in the UK, I never had a Master, I had a 64 and a Nes. I used to read Mean Machines so I was aware of games like WOnderboy3. When I got my Megadrive I intended to buy the converter (still 30 quid) and buy Wonderboy3...and if I had known about them at the time; Golvellius and the Golden Axe Zelda clone as I know I would have loved them! I also loved the Asterix games, but stuff moved too fast back then and I never did get he converter...bought a load of Megadrive games though. :D I think I had a thing about not buying games for an 8-bit system when I had a 16 bit (probably still brought some Nes games). But looking back now in 20/20, the best games sometimes appeared on different machines and sometimes that was the 8-bit.

Nice video, love the Master System. Back in 1987 while trying to decide which console to get, the 3-D glasses were the tipping point. I wish Nintendo would not have strangled the developers back then. So many great games were denied because of that. Though for me Rastan, Rampage, R-Type, Golvelllius, Alien Syndrome, Kenseiden, Wonder Boy games and Phantasy Star were just fantastic
