Godzilla Vs Hedorah is sickeningly underrated. I'm a History major in college and it's a great film that deals with 70s culture in a hilarious and unique way. It's also super psychedelic!

The English rendition of "Save The Earth" (the opening) is embedded in my memory since childhood. That movie had so many eerie scenes that I never forgot. I remember for instance feeling scared for the kid when Hedora came out of the water and he lifted his knife up, and his knife sliced through the monster. The effect on me was probably greater because I was that age so always had an association with the boys in the godzilla movies. Growing up in queens New York, I played in places like that - where the water wasn't the cleanest - or other urban settings. I was the latch-key introverted kid just like the boy in Godzilla's Revenge. Being of the same age and the same time it was so easy for me to connect with these movies. Anyone from my generation understands this yet it's impossible to share it with with others because they don't understand the appeal of those early movies for the kids of that day. .

Excellent top 10 list and these are absolutely great suggestions....I just would have put Godzilla 2000 somewhere on that list. It is simply a great introductory film for Godzilla that has a classic, straightforward, Godzilla centric plot-line. It is one of the entries that works well for younger and older audiences. It is sort of the prototypical Godzilla movie that checks all of the boxes that any non-fan would expect from one of these films. It also works as a great double feature with Godzilla 1998, not in the sense that it is a continuation of that movie or connected to it in any way(although it is fun to imagine that baby growing up and mutating into G2K)....but in the sense that it is almost a direct answer to everything that film missed about Godzilla. Puts Godzilla front and center right off the bat, spaces him out well throughout the film, has a classic sequence of the military throwing everything at Godzilla and failing, and finds a way to be a 'Solo Godzilla movie' while also making room for him to fight a giant monster at the end.

G2000 is severally underrated. Easily one of the better movies as a whole. Most G movies have a lot of skippable parts but that one is great from beginning to end. Orga was a great bad guy. Plus, the new G suit was bad fucking ass!

Godzilla portrayed as a force of nature is really one of the best things. Godzilla has tipped against nature, such as in Shin, and for the balance of nature, such as in the 2014 movie. I like that he isn't portrayed as for or against people in that one, and wonder if some of the bad guys get "corrected" by Godzilla in King of the Monsters.

Time to update the list! My top 10 for now are Godzilla '54, Minus One, GMK, Shin Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters (because I saw it in an actual theater back in the day on a double bill with Yog, Monster from Space and it blew my preteen mind), Godzilla vs Mothra '62, Return of Godzilla '84, Godzilla 2014, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah '92 because it's so weird, and King Of The Monsters 2019 for its weirdness and because it has Rodan the way I always imagined it. I’ve always been a big Heisei fan and Godzilla vs Destoroyah is by far my favorite Godzilla and even among my favorite films ever. The combination of emotion, action, visuals and score is nothing short of magnificent. I hope they save Destoroyah in the Monsterverse to fill the same shoes as before as the climax of the series as there would be no better fitting way to end it in my opinion.

I always remember growing up as a kid, my dad and I would go rent movies from Blockbuster on the weekends and I was always curious about the Godzilla films. The cover art made the monsters look terrifying, and when I asked my dad about them he would always refuse renting the movies by saying that they would give me nightmares. That only made my imagination go wild with what could be so terrifying about the films. Ironically I think I remember them more than the movies we actually ended up renting.

One of my personal favorites was Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla mostly due to the fact that they used the original 1954 Godzilla's skeleton as the base of Kiryu. When Godzilla's roar awakened Kiryu's dormant mind and the real Godzilla came out it left a big impact on me. It was like the original Godzilla was coming out to reclaim his mantle from the newer one. Not only that but I thought the action was pretty awesome too.

"The Return of" and the American cut "1985" is my second favorite Godzilla film following both cuts of the original. The sense of scale was done so well in that film and I'm happy you highlight Raymond Burr's monologue at the end, that scene was one of my favorites within the entire series. The conflicted mood at the end, the necessity to stop Godzilla juxtaposed with an empathy towards the creature and acknowledgement that Godzilla was a product of human error highlights the tragedy of the character.

growing up in late 80s/early 90s my parents had a couple godzilla movies (probably for my other brothers) but 1 I always loved was godzilla 1985 (return of godzilla), idk what it was about that movie but pretty much the darkness used really made godzilla scary but so freakin cool lol. That and the music was amazing

I consider Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster a significant film in the overall Godzilla series. Introducing fans and viewers to Godzilla's arch nemesis as well as the more heroic aspect to the character we'd come to know as the 60's progressed. As far as favourites go, Mothra vs Godzilla, Son of Godzilla, Godzilla 2000, and the og, Gojira.

Godzilla Tokyo SOS is one I'd recommend to friends as well. It was the first Godzilla movie I saw and they did a great job with pacing and special effects. Godzilla feels like such an ominous threat and the score is intense. And the fight scenes between him and Mechagodzilla are so iconic. They also make a call back to the first movie when MechaG remembers its origin as the first Godzilla. Overall it felt like it could be a stand alone movie because it has the classic "Godzilla attacks Tokyo" storyline, but with the added fun of extra monsters.

There is a kernel of truth to the dual ending myth. The Japanese version ends with onlookers debating whether or not Godzilla survived the fight, while the American version just says Godzilla disappeared without a trace. Also, the Japanese version has both Godzilla and Kong roaring over the end card, while the American version just has Kong's roar. While it certainly isn't "Godzilla wins in Japan, Kong wins in America", one could see how this myth got started.

My favorite all around Godzilla movie is probably Invasion of The Astro Monster or, as it should just be called, Monster Zero. Monster Zero has everything you can want in a Big G movie. Great fx, great characters, obviously a great score and the first Toho "Benevolent Aliens Who Make the Inevitable Heel Turn" plot in the series. It's fun and goofy but not TOO goofy. Destroy All Monsters is fun but Monster Zero has everything. And I think Terror of Mechagodzilla is seriously underrated.

I'm assuming the 2019 Godzilla film would crack this list? Personally, i have it as the best Godzilla film ever. All the monsters were incredible. We finally have a Rodan that is interesting. I just didn't care much for most of the earlier incarnations. Loved the way it held to Godzilla canon of the characters. The storyline of the Titans bringing life to the planet and restoring order is just fantastic. I couldn't be more pleased with the film.

I had a VHS copy of Godzilla vs Megalon when I was a kid. Mu gram got it for me at a dollar store. It cemented her and Godzilla's spots as my two favorite people in the world as a child.

I randomly decided it was time to actually start watching Godzilla films. I did some research to figure out where I should start. The story of Biollante sounded the most interesting so I started there. It’s pretty much the perfect combination of b movie camp, an interesting human story, amazing creature design, darker themes, and an entertaining Kaiju battle. It got me hooked on Godzilla and I bought every Heisei blu-ray I could find and eventually I’ll get that Criterion collection. I loved “vs. King Ghidorah”, and “Mechagodzilla 2” but Biollante’s still my favorite so far.

One of the best things about "Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidora, Giant Monsters All Out Attack" is that it's an argument against the question of whether Japan should rearm itself and develop a conventional military again. Godzilla as rage manifest to make Japan remember its crimes, attempting to remind the Japanese viewers of the horrors of its imperial past. While the JDFs attempts to improve its Combat Effectiness proves itself absolutely useless against Godzilla. This stands in sharp contrast to Shin Godzilla, which criticizes Japan's bureaucracy, pacifism, and unwillingness to offend the global community. And argues for stronger, more consolidated, and more definitive executive power and military force.

I got my start with Godzilla back when I was about 4 or 5. I've loved the Big G ever since, and I am happy to say my son is also a fan of everyone's favourite radioactive reptile. I first introduced him when he was about 9 (he's 20 now) with _Godzilla vs Mothra,_ and he loved it! Honestly, I can't argue with a single thing you've said on this list. This is a great selection as a starter pack for people new to Godzilla.

Godzilla vs destoroyah evokes more emotion in me than any bit of media I've experienced, with Godzilla king of the monsters trailer/theater viewing being 2nd, the former reminds me of the period in my childhood where not only had I witnessed the death of my most beloved movie monster, a lot of important things came to an end and reality began to set in and I had to start growing up, it makes me mourne the years past and hope that someday I'll get to make more memories like that again, good and bad. The latter... well I'm sure y'all guessed it, I felt like I was a kid again, like I just sat down on the old couch with my dad as he introduces me to the giant radioactive reptile I will obsess over for the rest of my life. It's ironic that big G was dying from his radioactive heart melting down because my dad has heart trouble as well now. Catching the 7am matinee of KOTM with him felt just like old times. Cherish the good things in life while you can, nostalgia is precious and finite, but all good things must come to an end eventually. I love you dad.

Godzilla vs Megalon was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw. This was back in 1991/1992, I was about 7 years old and my only exposure to Godzilla prior to that was the big Imperial plastic toy in my toybox. Not one of the best in the series, far from it, but to 7-year-old me it was the shizz and I have nostalgia for it to this day because seeing G vs Megalon sparked a lifelong pre-occupation.

I have seen most of the Godzilla movies and I enjoyed all of them. However, King Kong vs Godzilla was the one that had all the children in the Kiddie Matinee screaming their heads off!!! PS: I think I was the only one cheering for Godzilla!!!! My friend told me "How could you cheer for Godzilla??? Godzillla is a menace!!!"????
