When mentioning Disneyland it is important to mention that it is not technically in LA. Yes, it is considered to be in the metropolitan area of LA but it is in a completely different county. People visiting LA will probably have an easier time getting to Universal Studios than Disneyland.

Not only that, but depending on where in L.A you are staying, it can be a mission to get to Anaheim. I live close to Long Beach and it’s a 25 minute drive with no traffic. L.A is huge, it takes me 40 minutes to get to Universal Studios and over an hour to get to Six Flags (no traffic).

It's just easier to say Disneyland is in a suburb of L.A. and that is the truth. But people from places like New York City are used to seeing suburbs as boring, powerless, not as sophisticated as the city and detached from the city. They would say "My best friend lives OUTSIDE New York City": I would say " I was raised in the Los Angeles AREA". L. A. and its suburbs form a network and share power. The TV stations are in the suburb of Burbank. Our nationally televised parade that is on the same level as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is in the suburb of Pasadena. So for someone who sees things that way, you don't have to strain to make them understand that Disneyland is not in L.A. city.

My son worked in Burbank for a few years. While he was at work, I explored. It was easy to get a bus a few blocks from his apartment to downtown LA and walk all over the downtown. Bonus: the bus went through Chinatown, part of Griffith Park, Los Felices, and other neighborhoods we'd never visited before. When I asked to go to the Huntington Library and Gardens, my son drove us to Pasadena where that amazing place is located, despite its Riverside address. Afterwards we parked at the Pasadena train station for not much money and took the train for a last-chance run into downtown LA. Because that train is elevated, we got to see huge swathes of the industrial side of the city, something neither of us had considered because nobody talks about manufacturing in LA. When he and his wife moved closer to the Bob Hope Airport, they had to drive me to the subway station in North Hollywood. Wow. A clean, safe neighborhood and trains filled with friendly people!

In the seventies and eighties I worshiped New York City. I lived in Southern California as a kid a million years ago, went back a couple of years ago for four nights in LA and three nights in San Francisco. I absolutely am in love with LA and wish I could move there. I know I know, it has problems I get it, but it is the place where I feel most at home. I have never been happier than I was walking the streets by myself, visiting Union Station, The Chateau Marmont, Philippe's, dinner at Musso & Frank's, I realize those are vacation things and that living there is different, but I know I would love to live there. There's something in the air in LA, something spiritual that is nowhere else, at least for me. If I were younger and richer I would move there.

Correction about there being no public transportation from LA to Disneyland. There's actually a bus that takes you from LA union station to Disneyland and Knotts. Also don't take Amtrak to Anaheim, too costly. Take the Metrolink train to the Anaheim Transportation Center and from there take the shuttle to Disneyland.

Great tips. I have some two cents of my own, as someone who has been living here for 20+ years and counting: 1. About the weather. Yeah, we do get overcast days, particularly in May and June. But that's not what I would warn travelers about. LA weather can get HOT... very hot in the summer and early fall months. We will always have a couple days of the year where the thermometer hits over 100 degrees (40C for non-Americans). In some really bad years, the temperatures can hit as high as 110 degrees. I once returned from a trip to Canada. A Canadian family by me told me they wanted to bring their kids to Disneyland. They came in October, and unfortunately, it just happened to be one of those years with a really long summer; even though it was October, it was still like 95 degrees outside. I don't know how well people from colder climates can get used to walking around in 95 to 100 degree weather outside all day. 2. I disagree about public transportation. LA subway is extremely limited, and while it does take you to some tourist sites, unless you plan on only visiting those limited tourist sights near the subway stations, you will need a car to get around.

Let's no forget that there are times when there are people who pee or poop on the seats of the LA Subway or Metro Stations. If I tell this to someone who lived in Cambodia, they'll assume it was just a baby that made the mess. In reality it's a full-grown adult that wet the seat. As a LA native, there's a lot of things that happen here that makes this place difficult to live in.

@Yellow Productions Warning people that LA gets to 30, and later following that up with 'LAs public transit system is decent' is delusional. I'm from Brooklyn and the public transportation system here in NYC is extremely lacking when compared to other (comaprable cities) public transit systems around the world - where does that put LA at? After many vacation trips to LA and the Bay Area the only memorable thought that stuck to me is the extreme distaste for the urban-hell/lackluster public transportation system there; taxiing or renting a car is your only real option. On weather, the average LOW temperature in the winter seasons is around 52f or 11c -- a light jacket is fine -- anything meant to withstand 30f or -1c weather is ridiculous, and even more so when visiting in any other season. I also find the entirety of LA county brimming with tourist culture, as opposed to a community that locals live and work in, like here in NYC (and more so here in Brooklyn). This is even more surprising as New York's five boroughs are 10x more denser than LA county!

People in LA DO walk but just because we walk DOES NOT make it a good walking / pedestrian friendly city. Having grown up here in LA with a working class family, we took the bus and walked out of necessity. It’s not a great place to walk for leisure. Also the “walkable” neighborhoods are always in the wealthier places.

Quadruple check your parking spot for highly conditional no-parking signs. There's specific days and times where parking isn't allowed and it varies block to block. When I lived in Pasadena I had to move my car all the time to avoid parking tickets in front of my own house. And really look up and down the street to be absolutely sure you didn't miss any signs. Have gotten so many tickets in LA. There's these little 3 wheel parking enforcement cart thingies cruising around and giving out tickets all the time. But if you're just ubering and walking, then no worries really outside of the normal big city pick pockets, etc. I much preferred Bob Hope (Burbank) airport over LAX when I did have to fly in/out. I've also taken Amtrak a ton of times between LA and San Diego, including the Anaheim stop he mentioned. For me that's way less stress than driving. If you have the time.

Some things: I love "we have bad weather. See how we have some clouds?" Yeah, we can get wind/rain/heat, but we don't have snow or hurricanes. "Nobody walks in LA" doesn't mean "there isn't a single area where people walk." It means that most people are going to need a car to get around. Our city is sprawling, and our public transportation system is weak. I work two miles from my house and it would take me hours to get there if I tried to do it on a bus. I'm fortunate enough to live close to the Red Line (now the B Line), so I can actually take the subway downtown. But I rode it today for the first time since COVID, and holy cow that thing has gone downhill. The cars were filthy. You don't need to go to Skid Row to see people who are homeless. They are everywhere, including people surviving by riding the subway all day. I love that you said "LA isn't expensive" while standing in front of the Griffith Observatory, where parking is $15 an hour.

That's what I was thinking! And the bus normally would be $1.75 for a tourist, but it's free for everyone now. However, I assume Disneyland is only for folks with a vaccine passport.

I actually was caught up into two myths. I thought the people were going to be mean but they were really cool. The weather was actually cool last month. We asked someone where is the weather we hear about all the time. People give them slack about the healthy food but the Veggies were really good they tasted more natural. Didn't see a ton of overweight people because they were more active walking, biking, surfing, and the food. In Malibu it was mainly local establishment. Branded fast foods you had to really want it bc it was 30mins out.

I'm visiting LA this February but I opted for a direct flight from the midwest to the John Wayne Airport. I get in on a Friday afternoon, whats the best way to get up to downtown or Holywood? Take a Lyft?
@susieasado6675
@susieasado6675 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, renting a car or taking a Lyft would be best. TBH, I Iive in LA and I don’t think it’s a great place to visit. Lots to see in SoCal but LA is a big, hectic, expensive, and disjointed city. Unless you need to be here for a specific reason, there are much nicer places to visit in SoCal… i.e. Palm Springs, Laguna Beach, Joshua Tree, San Diego…

Neither tbh, for L.A. the cost of living is super high and not worth it not to mention the price of gas being anywhere from $4 a gallon to $5 a gallon and the homelessness is ridiculous. For las vegas, as far as I know, is that as soon as you leave the strip things are bad, but idk much about vegas tbh.

True! Way back in the 80's I was staying out by Disneyland and had gone into Downtown LA to meet someone at the New Otani Hotel 🏨 in Korea Town. As I recall I had to take an RTA Bus known as the 'Freeway Flyer' to get back out there! I think we took the 5 Freeway and it took awhile! So Yeah No Do like Mark says and concentrate on the area you're in LA and OC are 2 entirely different destinations Both worthy of ample time to explore them!

To be fair, those studios that you mentioned that DO still produce and have tours are in NORTH Hollywood.....on the other side of the Hollywood Hills....and nearby to the east, a little.....the exception being the Gower Studio complex...on the corner of Gower and Sunset...formerly the Columbia Pictures Studio where The Three Stooges Shorts were produced...among others.

I grew up in So Cal for the better part of 30 years and can absolutely say people can be friendly but most people tend to keep to the people they know. There are definitely neighborhood where everyone knows everyone but i think that is decreasing in general. Also traffic is as bad or worse than you think. There are a ton of unsafe places in LA, and rent/housing is sky high. Honestly if you can, leave. The only great things about so cal is the weather and the beach. If thats enough for you to stay great, but if not, leave now!

One thing i would say about LA as a brit, is our introduction to LA was the riots and gangland trouble around crenshaw etc. So from that people are of opinion that the whole city is one big ganster land, Especially people of my generation who grew up in the 80s in UK. Think that would have been a myth 11 :)

As an L.A County native, I agree with Chris. While we do have the most random weather, it’s mostly sunny year round. Also, Anaheim (Disneyland) is a completely different county and a very long drive if you are staying anywhere North of L.A. I live in South L.A close to Long Beach and it’s a 25 minute drive with no traffic. I couldn’t tell you how long it takes with public transportation tho, we all basically drive everywhere.
@BubblyViolin11
@BubblyViolin11 Жыл бұрын
I live in Ventura County and it’s about an hr and a half drive depending on traffic. A 45 min - 1 hr drive to get anywhere ‘touristy’ is pretty standard for us. Malibu and downtown LA are around 45 min, SB is an hr, Big Bear is an hr and a half. I personally don’t find it to be that bad but it could be because I’m just used to all the driving. Lol.
