Yes me too! While, no, Eccleston isn’t my favorite Doctor, I have NOTHING against him. He was good, VERY good...he’s just not David Tennant or Tom Baker (the two actors I consider tied for the greatest doctor of all time...With Matt Smith close, VERY close, behind them).

He is my wife's favorite Doctor, and I feel like a lot of people get so caught up in how big and captivating the personalities of Tennant, Smith, and Capaldi are, they fail to appreciate how Eccleston's portrayal of the Doctor laid the groundwork for who the following doctors are. Eccleston, I feel, made the Time War real and gave life to the sense of tragedy and soul hardening loss the Doctor experienced between the original run and the new series. Without him and how he played the Doctor, freshly returned from the destruction of his race, there is no depth of character to counterbalance Tennant's high energy, childish wonder, or Smith's cocksure playfulness. He definitely doesn't get enough credit.

I'd say Daleks were made terrifying in the Eccleston era. The episode shows how powerful Daleks really are compared to how they are shown after season 4 of NuWho. A single Dalek was portrayed as a creature which could kill off an entire city, making them one of the more powerful villains in the Who universe (and the most iconic)
@voodoominerman
@voodoominerman 3 жыл бұрын
"Dalek" and "The Stolen Earth" beautifully portrayed the most important bit of the Daleks: Dread. You can just see Ecclestons Doctor die inside when the Dalek first says his name. And when the Daleks broadcast their message to the human race in Stolen Earth, you can see the determination and strength just drain straight out of Sarah Jane and Captain Jack to be replaced with just... dread. Think about it. Sarah Jane has spent years fighting aliens threats and is about as skilled at it as a former companion can be. But when she hears that first "EXTERMINATE", she almost immediately hugs Luke and says "you were so young". One single word, and she's started mourning him. That's how you make a villain terrifying. Not through their own actions, but through the reactions of those around them. When the good guys start giving up because of one single word, you really know how screwed you are.
@adamfoxton6341
@adamfoxton6341 3 жыл бұрын
The referenced episode of Remembrance of the Daleks also did a good job of showing dread. At the start, the Doctor's almost nonchalant about the appearance of the Daleks- yeah, it's a Dalek, but they were expected and he's always won before. He makes the same mistake as Adam in Dalek- "THE STAIRS!" And then there he is, stuck at the top of the stairs, abandoned by his companion, a look of utter horror on his face as the Dalek advances towards him, screaming itself into a hateful murder-frenzy.

Only bad Dalek story in the RTD era was Daleks In Manhattan. Everything else was fucking glorious. Dalek is terrifying, Parting of The Ways is super suspenseful, Doomsday is downright iconic (Daleks fighting Cybermen? C’mon! It’s like every Who fan’s wet dream!), and the Stolen Earth was right back to terrifying.

The Dalek in Dalek was brilliantly spine chilling. I think the Dalek in Revelation looked creepy, but then you remember it was originally defeated by a mediaeval army (or was it earlier? Can't fully remember, it's been a while since I've seen the episode) and you stop to wonder how it's a threat at all.

As a child, going ALL the way back to the 60s, I _always_ instinctively just _knew_ Daleks could fly. If they wanted to. Plus, comics of the time had Dalek flying platforms anyway so ... meh, yeah. They’ve more or less always have had this capability (or could acquire it).

Originally, they couldn't even move, outside of their city. They relied on the magnetic propulsion system of their city floors. But after meeting the Doctor (and a bunch of other stuff) they quickly mastered interstellar flight and, if I remember right, reverse engineered a TARDIS. After that, I assumed they could fly.

The first time we see a Dalek levitating on its own is actually one Dalek story before Remembrance. In Part Two of _Revelation of the Daleks,_ Davros levitates before zapping Orcini, and in the next scene a Dalek hovers in the air to exterminate Natasha and Grigory. A Dalek actually levitates in 1973's _Planet of the Daleks,_ but it had to "stand" on an anti-gravity platform to do it; presumably they installed the anti-gravity device into the Dalek casing later ;)

Little known facts: The Doctors true name was known before the 2005 reboot and does appear in the series in a couple of subtle ways over the years. Sarah Jane Smith is the companion who met the most different incarnations of the Doctor, she shared screen time with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 11. The Brigadier is one of the longest running companions of the Doctor (first appearing alongside the second doctor) but he never travelled in the tardis. Cartmel master plan was much better premise than the Timeless Child... (ok more opinion than fact :p)

What Matt Smith did was allow Adults in the US to bring their kids into Doctor Who. Unlike in the UK, kids weren’t the audience for Doctor Who. The audience was primarily adults. But Matt Smith was very young and many kids were better able to relate.to this day my now 20 year old, who started watching Who with Matt Smith in 6th grade, still thinks Matt Smith is the best Doctor. I believe that is why Who “blew up in the US”. We had more room for growth.

K Rab I’d have to disagree about kids not being the audience in the uk. I started watching it when I was 9 (2008) and so did a few of my friends who are into that stuff. They also sold dr.who magazine, cards and sticker books that we all ended up collecting. Even my parents watched dr.who when they were kids. I mean it’s a lot scarier watching it as a kid. It’s definitely more of a family show, Sarah Jane was more of a kids show and Torchwood was for adults

Smith I believe happened to have more merch associated with him; I at one point had the 9/10 sonic screwdriver, a David Tennant cardboard cut out (he was our unofficial sci-fi club mascot) and a few books from the 10 era but not much else; Smith got LEGOs, action figures, cosplay accessories, actual commercials during the show advertising everything... I might just be misremembering/underestimating how much merch there is for all the other Doctors, but I wonder how much of Smith's popularity was tied to being able to show off via merch

u all raise great points ) i always thought it was bc Smith and his era, from his look, the feel of his episodes, his companions, and his behavior, naturally had a more international appeal for kids/adults everywhere. ontop of the fact, that yeah, his era could appeal to kids (he met Amy as a little girl, and he went back in time to get to know Clara when she was a kid... we even see Rory as a kid eventually), and yeah, there was definite merchandise, but i always felt that maybe it was also bc of Smith. Eleven was the doctor who gave u the most sense of 'i could travel with anyone, no matter where u r from/who u r/how old u r. as long as i think u r great, i'll travel with u. he felt like the doctor who was 'everyone's friend'. but that's just a theory, of course. :)

Speaking as someone who is a Stateside fan, used to watch the classic episodes on PBS, what back when that was the only way to watch it... I can tell you that most of the people I know who actually watch the show, really got tuned in when David Tennant became the Doctor. Our main problem has always been availability. We would love to the time have to watch it in syndication, and the show kept moving from channel to channel, as if the doctor would get bored on one channel and decide to move to another. For a while, all of the new who was available on Netflix, then the doctor got bored and moved to Hulu. And then all at once, none of our streaming services had it available. And it was like that during half of Smith's run, and pretty much all of Capaldi. It, of course, doesn't help that most people would cutting cable, so BBC America wasn't really widely available unless you were paying cable prices. Fortunately, HBO's streaming service has the entire run, so some of us can get caught up. But it's been a difficult Road for some of the American fans.

@@OneTrueScotsman I'm not a huge fan of monopolies... But I really miss the days when everything eventually ended up on Netflix. You might have to wait an extra year, but there was a time you knew that just about anything you watch would end up there. And in general, there was no interference from Netflix as to the type of content they carried. Just about every thing involved with Disney has to have California ideology built into the DNA somewhere, and California lives in a bubble. They prefer to go political over story... And what I mean by that is that, they don't manage to make whatever political narrative they are pushing intrical, subtle, or good for the story. They just shoehorn it in, and leave us questioning why they bothered to put it there, because it doesn't make any sense with the rest of whatever we're watching. Sorry for the rant.

Steven Moffat and Russell T Davis are such legends. Neither of them is a perfect writer, but they were absolute fanboys having fun and it shows. The Chibnall era lacks this buddies writting club feel. Chibs can be awesome, but he needs to relax and have fun. I also wish he assumed his Cartmel Master Plan nerdiness, and maybe invite the man himself back on the show ? We can always dream, but it would be funny to have Andrew Cartmel get rid of that "f*cking screwdriver" in an imaginative way ^^.

Excellent video. Extremely entertaining. I'm a hardcore Dr. Who fan since the Pertwee seasons, and just loved David Tennant. I was utterly devastated when he 'had to go' and delighted when he came back for the cameo with Matt Smith and the late, GREAT War Doctor, John Hurt. And as an aside, when I was at Oxford (University of Oxford) in the seventies, somebody did in fact 'bongo' me with LSD and it was a trip I would never want to experience again. You know how the titles in classic Dr. Who were designed to have 'streamers' coming off of them which moved and flowed as the playback moved and flowed? That was how an LSD induced visual looked and felt. I would not recommend it nor wish a repeat of it.

A bit more on the 3 seasons “rule”... Peter Davison knew Patrick Troughton from something they’d worked on together. Troughton advised Davison to leave after 3 series to avoid being typecast, and Davison took the advice. He then passed on the same advice to his son in law - David Tennant. That’s why Tennant changed his mind about staying on for the extra season.

1. Christmas/ New Year Specials are considered part of the outgoing season so yes the Daleks have been technically used in every season since the revival 2. Colin Baker didnt film a regeneration scene because he had just got the sack from Doctor Who and was rightly pissed off about it! He has said in recent interviews that it was petty and stupid but his idea of him doing the first episode of that season and regenerating at the end seemed like a suitable compromise

In just the third appearance of the Daleks they were seen on The Mary Celeste on different levels of the ship, ie; some were up stairs and some were on lower parts of the ship. They were not shown moving up or down those stairs, but they had to have gotten up and down them somehow. This episode was shown in 1965. Elements of the Cartmel Masterplan were incorporated into the New Adventures novels that were published after the cancellation of the show, particularly the novel "Lungbarrow". The Doctor was revealed to be the genetic reincarnation of a Time Lord who worked alongside Rassilon and Omega to create the foundations of Time Lord technology and society, but chose to let himself be forgotten by history. He threw himself into the genetic "looms" that Time Lords use to reproduce, got absorbed, and was reborn as The Doctor ages later.

I hated that. Why create a retcon character called "The Other" when it would've been much easier to have claimed The Doctor is Rassilon with amnesia and a new regeneration cycle? It would have tied in nicely with the Doctor who Movie, where it was stated he was half human, so I quite liked the idea, and fitted in with the fact Leela was last seen on Gallifrey romantically involved with a Timelord. Potential Spoilers.... I dont get, why so many people overlook "Remembrence of the Daleks" its a cool Story, we see Daleks fly for the first Time and we hear the "Clocksong" from Matt´r run, for the first Time. Even Creepier this time "Fiiivvveee , six....... seeevvveeennn, eight......there´s, the ....Doc....toooorr.....at! the! Gate!" + we get to see, the Dalek Battlecomputer is a 10year old girl, how cool is that. Sylvester McCoy mentioned the "Masterplan" in a Potcast earlier this year. It was planed, for the Doctor, to be "The Other" one of three Godlike Beeings. He alongside Rassilon and Omega created Timelord Technologie and society. Rassilon was the one who came up with the Power to regenerate. Limited to 12 for all Timelords exapt the three or himself....Omega was the "mad" Scientist who came up with weapons, such as the "Hand of Omega" or the "Moment" (Day of the Doctor) they were stored in the Omega arsenal thats why the War-Doctor knows about it. The Other was the one who made the Tardis (in some versions its Rassilon too) abd the moral stuff. But after Time, his companions god mad by power and the Other could not bare to watch his friends go insane. He changed his name into "The Doctor" took his granddaughter and left his friends and his Godlike status. Thats were the series kicks in. There have been hints all the Time. Brain of Morbius. Many people claim you see Morbius faces BUT when you look closly you can see, Morbius faces are yellow lighted the Doctors are orange. During the 6th Doctors run it was said, the Matrix stores Memorys but can not be inluenced, But the Doctor is able to "blast" the Matrix by plugging himself into it. The 4th Doctor did that too, also 13. Later in Rememberence of the Daleks, Ace asked the Doctor something like "Could they really do that powerfill stuff back in the days?" And the Doctor answers "Oh back in the Days we did unspeakable things.....uhm...i mean...they did" later that season Ace is asked by a villian "Do you know what the Doctor is?" Ace said "He is a Timelord" and the villian shook her head. Idk about you,but i like this version better then Chibnals version.

I think the biggest factor in the "Three Series Rule" myth has less to do with Troughton telling the producers that, and more to do with Troughton giving that advice to *Peter Davison* when Davison took the role. But even then... while yes, Davison only did three seasons, he had to make the decision on whether to do a fourth season before he had finished making his second season, and he wasn't particularly happy with his second season. Davison has publicly said had he gotten the scripts for his third season during his second season, he probably would have done a fourth. And of course, Colin rather infamously said when he took the role that he wanted to break Tom's record, and Sylv was intending to return for a fourth season when the plug got pulled on the show.

The Daleks were implied to levitate back in 1965, in The Chase they're shown on parts of the Mary Celeste that were only accessible via steps! And then of course you have the Planet of the Daleks ventilation shaft scene, although admittedly the ability to levitate wasn't built in at that point.

"Oh, I'm far more than just another Timelord!" - The Doctor to Davros, Remembrance of the Daleks (in the colonies, I think that line got cut out of the UK broadcast). Along with him mentioning working on the prototype of the hand of Omega with Rassilon & a few other bits, clearly the master plan was already being seeded. That memo sounds like a description of LSD from someone who's not only never taken LSD, but has never met anyone who has, either.

There was a line cut from the later Doctor Who TV Movie where The Master mocks The Doctor over that former claim after The Master discovers The Doctor is half human. I really liked that along with the deleted scene where Chang-Lee accidental hits a crow while driving the ambulance and that angers The Master. Another thing that didn't get done - that Phil Segal wanted to do - due to budgeting was adding all of the Classic Doctors to the scene where the Eye of Harmony displays the 7th Doctor to Chang-Lee and The Master. The budget took a major hit when Phil Segal and Universal discovered that the BBC didn't own the rights to the Doctor Who theme music and Segal insisted upon paying a hefty price to license its use from Warner. That also nixed the plan to include K-9 in the movie [since the BBC also didn't own the rights to that character either], not to mention only being able to briefly mention the Daleks separately from their updated "Exterminate" voices for the intro scene where The Master is allegedly executed...but I digress.

To be fair (kind of) the whole movie and trying to make Doctor Who an American production was a terrible choice so that could be why the Boob doesn’t want Joe Hill to write Who. OTOH the Beeb licensed Who out to US production companies so that dumpster fire also lands squarely on their shoulders as well. Paul McGann was done dirty too but he at least got a few amazing curtain calls.

Prior to Remembrance of the Daleks, Davros is also seen hovering in Revelation of the Daleks three years earlier. Not a Dalek I know, but it would be likely the same tech is used throughout the Dalek forces!

I love how he mentions Remembrance for the floating Dalek, but forgets, or at least didn't mention the Doctor slipping up and telling Ace that "didn't we have trouble with the prototype" for the Hand of Omega, in that same story, as a bit of proof for the Cartmel Masterplan.
@HandofOmega
@HandofOmega 3 жыл бұрын
FWIW, after the series was cancelled, many of the writers (including Cartmel) would fully enact the Masterplan in the 7th Doctor novels, so it's possible to see what they were going for. I dug it at the time, as it was Answering Questions and Filling In Backstory, all stuff I loved at the time. Now, I'm glad it didn't get made canon, for much the same reasons The Timeless Child is bad for the show (altho TTC is much worse, IMO).

Also, any such list of Who urban legends (especially ones with absolutely no basis in fact) is incomplete without the rubbish that the Kameleon robot was simply found by a dumpster outside the studio, and JN-T just thought, "Hey, let's work this in!" That one's particularly frustrating because the REAL story behind Kameleon is SO well documented, but it keeps coming up.

Here's an "urban legend" for you--two of them actually, though they're similar--and they're kind of a spinoff of that "only Brits can work on Doctor Who" legend. I'm writing an entire series set in an alternate Earth, and the show of Doctor Who exists in that world. I've also invented several races that have "lesser versions" of the Doctor's abilities/habits (some form the ultimate travelling caravans and divide their years between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres like Arctic Terns, and some transform with the seasons to look like totally different people at different times of the year), and the legends both say that the Doctor himself was based on those races' abilities (the debate is if people of those races wrote it themselves, deliberately exaggerating their skills for dramatic effect, or if people _not_ of those races wrote it and simply misunderstood where the limits were). Is the collective legend true, that the Doctor is based on those people? And if so, which side of the legend is correct? I don't know yet, I'll need to do more research on Doctor Who and worldbuilding in my storyverse; with how my world is set up right now, if the collective legend _is_ true, the travelers and seasonal shifters most likely wrote the show themselves.

@GamingWithChu I'm not a pro football player either but I can tell when a player misses a goal. Chin Balls missed the goal when writing for Doctor Who, being accomplished for one thing doesn't mean you're great at writing for everything and to assume otherwise? now that's being childish.

@GamingWithChu And where are you getting all this information? where are your sources? and on what planet is losing over half the viewing figures over the span of a couple of seasons a good thing? Know what I think? I think you're just blindly defending it for one reason or another. Saying a bunch of bull because you feel you have to. Of course if you can back up your claims and prove me wrong, I'll admit as much myself.

I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for doing it. Any rumors when Chibain will leave? A new head writer can rewrite the Timeless Child like the Doctor fell asleep and dreamt it all. Like they did on the old 19 80's TV show, "Dallas"! It's been a while now and I still can't wrap my head around that dumb episode.

Waaaay back in "The Chase" the Daleks were implied to be able to fly or leastwise to navigate stairs, though it wasn't shown on screen. When the Daleks take over the ship _Marie Celeste_ a Dalek or two are shown on the upper deck, which is only accessible by stairs.
