I love the sound of a Toyota 1HZ at idle its a pleasing sound reminds me of when i was a kid and my old man made me get out and open the gate's on the farm and the only sound that I'd hear was birds chirping slight breeze going through the trees and the quiet Rumble of a idling LandCruiser. Ahh Those Were the Days I didn't have to worry about bills, TAX, Farm TAX and all the other shit that comes with being an adult.

I love my i6's. I have an 01 dodge 2500 with the 5.9L cummins ISB was my grandfather's) and a 4.0L i6 in a jeep tj (also was my grandfathers). I have a high flow exhaust system and large tip (roast me) on the tj and it sounds like a less bass-y cummins at idle imo

The main rule with the two stroke Detroit Diesel engines is "Drive it like you stole it." And the 3406 Cat engine was a well built power plant.

It’s not a Volvo engine. Volkswagen built the engine and Volvo put a turbo on it. Most gutless turbo 6 cylinder diesel to be in a passenger car for sure.

I used to work at an AGCO (Successor to Deutz-Allis here in the states) dealership so we saw them fairly often. Always really cool engines I thought. Had quite a few SAME air cooled diesels come through, too.

Should've swapped the Nissan rd28 with the Nissan TD42 the TD42 is still a inline6 td engine bit it's displacement is bumped up to 4.2L and is way more reliable (some examples going up to 6-700 thousand kms

2.5 V6 TDI wasn't that horrible I have two cars with 2.5 V6 TDI and I'm happy they're never broke in my hands. People are talking crap about this engine because never had him and only heard that it is bad or they treat him bad ( it's not bulletproof engine). Sound if you add straight pipe is similar to 3.0 and on high rpm like petrol V6 :)

That is one bad engine. BMW could not build reliable diesels until 1998. I had driven a BMW E28 524 td, the second engine was a fluke. It was pretty much reliable, if treated right and got past 300.000 kms.

Ever heard of SISU diesel? Or AGCO power these are pretty much the same thing and are being used in Valtra tractors and in some massey fergusons too. I think they sound great as well!

In California, you can only operate an old on road Detroit for 1,000 miles per year. I miss that sound. Used to be in most busses, ready-mix trucks, fire equipment, many boats, etc.

I was honestly surprised the 3116 was on this list, now even though “small block” cats have their issues I still would have chose a 3126 or a C7 over the 16, but I do agree the 3406E is by far possibly the best they produced, but I do have a soft spot for the 6NZ’s though

Love those older air cooled deutzs. Allot of guys complained on rebuilds about setting liner height as it's very time consumimg. But like a Swiss watch,once they are rebuilt right they run for a long time.

I learned to drive in a 525e, 2.7 litre 123hp it might as well have been a diesel :) You are right about the Audi 2.5 tdi. at work I had a PD130 Passat which use to move, the sales guys had to have the Audi, what a waste of money they were.

I've seen a few in pickups. It's hard to find but there was a local guy here in NY with an early 70s Ford pickup (no bed,maroon in color) with a twin turbo 6v53. I think it ran in the 11s , and he said if you were stupid and did a brake stand it would twist the pinion like a pretzel. I saw him in a diesel drag vid on here, that has to be like 10yo now. and it would probably take me an hour to find.

MB OM501, OM441, OM366, OM352, OM906, DAF WS, XE, MX13, Man D2886, Iveco Cursor 13, Mack E series (Renault magnum), YaMZ 236 and many other great sounding diesels are missed. It's impossible to make "Best 10" video) because much more engines has great sound.
