Sweden had those too. Maybe not as late as in the 60's but we had em.

160+ hp out of a 500cc...way more powerful than anything electric. Not to mention the weight. The fact the climate whackos ended 2 strokes makes me livid, when all their belongings are made in China, who emits unlimited pollution.

I have designed flat 8 engines, both shared and boxer. I found that the boxer 8 is best for a production car due to smoothness, where opposing pistions move in and out in tandem to eliminate any rocking couple in the engine. It would be better at turning really fast than a cross-plane V8, while still getting the growl that cross-plane V8s has.

The square four would have been genious if he had made the two cranks 360 degrees. Then he (Ed Turner), would have made a U engine with perfect primary and perfect secondary balance. It would literally have been vibrationless. But alas he went with two 180 cranks and the rest is history.

The problem with straight 8s is that when you get a bonnet that big and you're certainly not making a car for the average joe, why not put two of them together and make it an epic V16 ! Today's grand tourers can easily house a V16, in fact cars these days are ridiculously big but the kind of services and characteristics a straight 8 in that range of the market can provide with the exception of its smoothness, are already outperformed by V8s, V12s have their own special charisma and can definitely outmatch any 8s with the right configurations, leaving V16 to be the only worthy and rightful heir to that huge throne of an engine bay

6 cylinders r supposed to b in perfect balance! With there 120 degree throws! Interesting way the engineers tackled the harmonics on this crank by using the biggest crank pins at three and four and the smallest at one and six so I would have to assume their were crank pins somewhere in between at 2 and 5 They possibly would have been better off using a one piece forged crank! With decent sized webs and crank pins to tackle harmonics. Fluid dampers were prob not a thing back then the cbx 1050 has never had a crank prob but only does half of the revs of course also uses a harmonic balancer I believe up there in the alternator / primary drive interesting that Honda used to drive the trans off the crank centre not so much now from what I’ve seen

If Ford made a V10 diesel, the other truck manufacturers would’ve been COOKED. Or a V12 for trucks available in gas and/or diesel made by Ford.

What is the Ferrari model appearing at 4:42? I assume it's a 250 GT Boano, based on the front nose and rear window styling. However, I have never seen a Boano coupe with the 410 Superamerica style front air vents, nor have I seen one with the pared down racing bumpers. In those days, the cars were totally hand built so a mix and match of styles was entirely possible on ultra-special examples.

The bmw 6sp 420G can easily handle 1000hp and north of 600+NM of tq. For a cheaper version, the bow ZF 5sp has also been known to handle 1000hp but its better to keep power at 800hp & 500-600NM of TQ or so max.

It may not've been a successful racing engine, but it sure sounded like one! Forget the Ferrari V12 "Wail", the BRM V16 SCREAMED...! Admittedly, when it was screaming, it might have had reason, as it was usually eating itself... But while it lasted, NOTHING sounded better...

I know quite a few whose M57's have gone +/-600k km and are still rocking perfectly fine, albeit after having some preventative work done like timing chain, unnecessary equipment removal like swirl flaps and egr, regular maintenance done - oils/coolant/filters/gaskets, thermostats, injectors, turbos All that list is something that needs to be done over a long time
