I started learning German when I was in high school. Die Sendung mit der Maus and Lola Rennt were two shows/movies that we watched. I minored in German in college and took a class on German film, I can't remember all the movies we watched in that class, but there were some that I absolutely fell in love with. Das Versprechen, im Juli, Der Untergang, etc. Today, I have over a dozen German films in my collection. The best movies to help with learning or keeping up with German are Goodbye, Lenin!, Nirgendwo in Afrika, Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei, Das Experiment, and Das Versprechen. As for my favorite TV shows, Babylon Berlin is great, as are The Empress and Charite.

There are sooooo many more, dear Jenna. The problem is, at least as far as my German Netflix account shows, that the majority of them don't come with subtitles. So, not very adequate for beginners I'm afraid. But shows like the in another comment already mentioned "Der Tatortreiniger" or "Mord mit Aussicht", "Hubert und Staller" or "Stromberg" are well worth mentioning in case people are interested in German shows and want to refine their German language skills while being very well entertained...💛💛

isnt stromberg just "the office" in german? with worse actors, and worse plot? sorry if i am wrong, never watched more than 1 or 2 episodes because it was just BAD
@flamedealership
@flamedealership 2 ай бұрын
@@Brainreaver79 You are kinda wrong - yes, "Stromberg" was an adaptation of "the office". And to be honest here, to judge the plot of a comedy show is like judging a car for it's colour - you _can_ do it but in the end it's a rather meaningless endeavour. I've watched the British original with Ricky Gervais and the US version with Steve Carrell and I have to say that in terms of acting skills I was thoroughly disappointed in the British original. I *love* Ricky Gervais as a nasty comedian but he isn't that good of an actor. On the other hand Steve Carrell and Christoph Maria Herbst are both in a league of their own. Their skills as comedic actors are outstanding - perfect accentuation and timing! Though I agree that in both cases the rest of the respective cast members aren't that good with the exceptions of Bjarne Mädel in the German version and John Krasinski and Elli Kemper in the US version. But that's just my personal opinion and everybody is entitled to have their own... Have a nice week 😁💛💛

qflamedealership: yep, even most dont come with dubbing (which was more important) or subtitles (in difference to much more Spanish or even Turkish shows). And there are many German shows/movies which sound more profane for Germans but could be much more famous if they were better accessible for the global market. In difference to what many think it has not to be 'extraordinary' just good standard ware which has a regiional flavor (from the global perspective). Most of the Spanish an other shows are quite trivial ... Germany already made the mistake by on one hand having the first 'Princess Charming' show but again, not did a dubbing or subtitles. People from Asia to the Americas had to reconstruct indiretly/complicated some subtitles themself. All of those cases are NOT mostly due to different laws/reglementatoins but a lack of awareness to flood/create a much bigger market outside of Germany. They dont GET IT!

"Dogs of Berlin", yeah, I love that one, too. Did you know that Berlin, the Bundeshauptstadt (Federal Capital) sometimes is called the "Hundeshauptstadt" (dog capital) by Berliners themselves, and even the renowned Langenscheidt dictionary offers two translations for the word "Tretmine": an antipersonnell mine or booby trap (military), or a pile of dog dirt (colloquial). I lived in Berlin for seven years, and no matter how cautious or thoughtful you are, sooner or later you'll step onto one of these booby traps, preferably when the weather is cold, the poo is still steaming warm, and there's no place near to clean your shoe. It's a unique smell. If you haven't had that experience yet, come and visit Berlin. I'm sure you'll like it.

Also "Toni Erdmann" (funny and deep) and this years Oscar nominee "Das Lehrerzimmer" is already on amazon prime. Apart from that my all time favourite in the German language is a 1942 classic "rom-com". "Wiener Blut" (like the waltz by Strauss) is pure comedy gold still.

So my personal advice list is short, or old: "Männer" by Doris Doerrie has great funny moments abount relations (in fact any movie by her). For really classic sci-fy watch "Raumpatroille Orion", a 60s tv series of 7 films about a spaceship, preceeding startrek but having really funny tricks. And to get deep into german humor wartch any of Loriots TV shows, like "Weihnachten bei Hoppenstedts". Just to name a few. Most of them available on YT. 😉

Do you like (German) vampire movies? Then you should watch "Wir sind die Nacht" (we are the night). A lonely street girl in Berlin (played by Karoline Herfurth) gets involved with a group of vampire-ladies in a night club. She joins them and enjoys a luxury living - but soon she sees what cruel kind of things vampires are capable of- and gets doubts if she wants to become a vampire or rather be together with her new cop-boyfriend... Too late for her? Partially a bit like the US series "The sex and the city" as a vampire-version, but with a great dark atmosphere in the Berlin club scene.

Der Untergang is one of the best German movies evr, IMHO. But it may be difficult to follow if someone is just starting to learn German. Well, worth trying anyway, I guess. Goodbye Lenin is really hilarious, and caught the feel of the time after the wall fell pretty good, I'd say. It does help if you know some of the habits in the old DDR though. Else it may just look crazy, because its so far out how they behave. Well, the times were crazy back then...

"Das Leben der Anderen" is really fantastic. To the "Boot" (one of the best ever) especially the mini-series, I would add the series "Babylon Berlin". The anti-war films "Stalingrad" and "Die Brücke" both absolutely not heroizing (like Hollywood). "Helen Dorn" and "Sarah Kohr" are strong female characters in crime fiction. For German 😜 advanced the "Eberhofer" crime thrillers, hilarious!
