The parallel 5532 would be the JRC OPA5532 Dual op amp on Audiophonics website right?
@GOLD4MUSIC7 ай бұрын
Two surprises for me. 1st) The LHY Discrete, overall the best in all aspects, purer analogue amplifier is not possible, bass, mids, highs all there with speed and precision without hardening. 2nd) Parallel ne5532, no comments just one, just perfect sound for the price and much better than other competitors at 10 & 30x the price of this one.
@AstroSam663 ай бұрын
The NE5532 is, without a doubt, a really good audio OpAmp. But it's design is quite old. Newer designs like the LM4562 has a better SNR and faster slewrates. But be carefull, faster OpAmps are prone to oscillate if you don't have a suitible circuit and PCB. You normally can't hear this oscillation (it's in the MHz region) but your OpAmp (and following stages) will get very hot and could burn out!

Interesting video thanks for your efforts. I am an audio electronics engineer and am used to critical listening. IMHO the stand out Op Amps were the LT, Sparkos and Oracle. The LHY was excellent but impractical for the class D chip amps and IMHO not worth it. The NE5532 has always been a firm favourite with me and IMO sounds as good or better than a lot of Burr Brown or Analogue Devices Chips, especially for the price. If you parallel two NE5532 you will reduce the noise and clearly improve the sound, but the fact that they get hot means they are loading the power supply (and this troubles me; probably requires a decoupling capacitor on the power rails). Based on price, I would say the LT or Oracle are winners for me.
@meindertsprang7491Ай бұрын
The fact that the paralled NE5532 tells you that you cannot simply parellel them Each of them will have a different offset voltage and when paralleled, they will start to fight eachother to cancel each others offset * gain that appears at the output. you MUST add a resistor on each output before bringing the outputs together to take "the heat" of this fight.

It does sound really good - no lie! However, I just tried that in my Fosi ZA3, and after 10mins of playing music they were super HOT! To the point that when you slid open the case and touched them, you immediately went "Ouch %@#$!" I even had a thin piece of cardboard between them when soldering them together to have an air gap for heat concerns. (I removed the cardboard after soldering and placed into the amp, ofc). I then tried a single 5532 on the Left and a double on the Right - same issue. The double stack got super hot and the single was warm. Not sure if I would recommend two op-amps soldered together.

Just bought my first opamp mod LT1028 sounds so clean here and in real life. Took our Burson vivid v6 from the timekeeper 3i. 4 x LT1028 caused a lot of explosive and crackly issue on one of the channel. Kept 2 x v6 on the IV stage and the 2x LT1028 on LP stage. Cleaner background than 4xV6, lower-mid range forward, wider stage but more shallow, great dynamics, a tad less treble edge too. So cheap compared to buying 4xV7s etc. Thanks for sharing the vids, keen to hear anyone who can let me know why one of the channel started to crackle and pops when I fit all 4x dual LY1028. In my experience, and I have built amps with various designs, even with tubes: The sound difference you can achieve with amps is over-estimated. It takes careful listening to detect them. Opposed to that, the effect of a touch of EQ, or different loudspeakers / headphones are several magnitudes stronger than varying the amp. It is no surprise if you introduce another OPA into a circuit that was carefully designed for a specific OPA. This does not allow for a general statement about an OPA but always relates to the respective circuit.

Appreciate your efforts and time with this. I currently have A07Max w Eversolo DMP8, Arendal 1961 towers. After looking at many amp reviews and thinking I need to explore tube hybrid AB, I realize I need to explore op amp and upgrade to 48 v 5/10 amp power supply w filers first. So much is intriguing but costly and a pain returning equipment. W electronics I am blown away w class d but other genres less so, recordings clearly vary.
@brunobassi2440Ай бұрын
Class D has the problem that the distortion above 6khz increases too much if the volume increases. With the AB class it is possible to easily obtain a distortion of less than 0.1% up to 70% of the maximum power. With class D, distortion above 10khz increases terribly over 25% of the maximum power. Using a more powerful power supply, the phenomenon is reduced but does not disappear. Fortunately, it is rare to exceed 10 watts to listen to home. TPA3255 has a particular feedback system that reduces some defects in class D, so you can expect 10 watts clean at 20khz (0.1% distortion) but, increasing the volume, it is easy to exceed 0.3% to 20khz. It is true that a standard human ear does not perceive the distortion of over 12khz, but a young musician could understand that something is wrong.
@MichaelBeeny2 ай бұрын
NEVER NEVER just put 2 op amps together simply on top of each other. They will get very hot because it makes the chips oscillate and go unstable. You can parallel them, but they do need isolation resistors. Getting hot should be a warning that something is very wrong, think about it!! It could also damage the amplifier by drawing more current than it was designed to do. An average op amp will draw 10mA, some of these so-called discrete chips draw over 50mA. While these all share the same pin outputs, different chips need different compensation components to keep them stable and get the best from them.
@ryanchappell59622 ай бұрын
Hi Michael!
@ryanchappell59622 ай бұрын
Michael is right here that oscillation can be a problem. There was another commenter who said this stacking is a short circuit and that is not correct. The oscillation Micheal is talking about is more of an issue with high speed opamps with high bandwidth. That kind of oscillation would probably affect the sound in a negative way so if you were not hearing that, you might have been saved by the relative slowness of the ne5532. However that opamp is a pretty warm running unit and it will probably overheat and die eventually.

The LHY is third for me only because it sounded a little too dark. I'm listening through a SET tube headphone amp, so that may account for the sound with the LHY being too dark for me on my system. *******After Downloading the Uncompressed File*********** With the uncompressed audio on the downloaded file, all of the tracks sound better. My top 3 choices are the same as when I listened on KZbin, except the order is reversed so that the LHY Discrete Double is my top pick, followed by the Burson v7 Vivid, which is followed by the Oracle 02. Excellent test. I have done some basic comparisons using the belly hatch of a Aune X8 DAC. And more serious testing of V6 Vivid versus Sparkos 3602 and 2590 in a Burson Conductor 3XP. Since you are using flying leads and have to leave the case open anyway, You should try the Sparkos Pro 2590. I believe you would find them to be the best. But they are very large to try to fit 4 of them inside a DAC for instance. I have compared them to OP1656, Burson V6 Vivid and Sparkos 3602 and the 2590 is in a league of its own. Especially if you solder on a pair of extra 100 uf caps onto the board in addition to the chip caps that are already included and add a simple ground bus wire between them which dual op amps do not have a pin to supply ground to the chip. The power supply on the board is undoubtedly well bypassed to ground on any high quality component, but especially when using the addition of flying leads taking the op amps away from the board, bypassing the Sparkos Pros right on their board makes a still further improvement. Even with the KZbin compression I could still hear many differences and do agree that the LHY was the best. The Burson V7 Vivid seems a good improvement over the previous V6 so I ordered my new (yet to arrive) Soloist 3X GT amp with them and the SP2 regulators as an upgrade and was hoping they would be good enough to avoid the urge to fit a set of (6!) Sparkos Pros but we shall see. It would be expensive but maybe I could get something back from selling the V7s I didn't like the Stacato or the Oracle. The double 5532 was better than using just one alone and makes me wonder what a double or triple OP1656 might sound like.

I have single to dual adapters I've tried. Tone is very subjective and largely depends on synergy with the rest of your system. But in terms of soundstage height, depth, width, and the layering clarity of spacial cues, dual OPA1656s sound 80% as good as the Sparkos. NE5532s probably closer to 60%. I need to try the Muse02s. Also have Oracles on the way. I've not heard the Bursons or LHY. Very interested to try the Sparkos Pros.

Perhaps it's something that you can only really hear in front of the actual speakers instead of a recording. Someone should do a comparison by subtraction between two tracks. If there's a difference, it should then easily pop up. If you get (near) silence, all the opamps are basically the same.

It's great that you tested everything so quickly!! (paralleling of opamps) I understood the topic a little and in general this is not entirely correct electrically, what you said about high temperature is precisely a consequence of this. But it sounds!! also my audio engineer friend commented “If he literally just connected the legs of the chips, well, he was lucky. This op-amp survived that. But don’t rush to accept a simple explanation as a recipe for all occasions. I insist that doing so is not correct. The total current consumption should increase significantly. Connecting the outputs directly is analogous to a short circuit. Most likely, in this design the through current of the output stages of both op-amps has increased significantly. But not to a critical value - operational amplifiers usually have an output current limitation. But increasing the current through the output stage usually has a beneficial effect on quality. In general, there are prerequisites for an increase in quality. But the method is barbaric." so be careful.

It's a great combo, and it would be neat to see a video by someone experimenting on mixing amps like this instead of just here are the opamps. Enjoy. This could be a neat video for you. Coincidentally I tried playing between the vivid and classics for my soloist 3xp and found as well V6 classics for the input stage and vivid for volume gain works best.

@beherit98 I see. It's cool to see that I'm not the only one to have that opinion. I initially had a Sound Blaster AE-9 for my custom-built PC, and I was curious about the op-amps. I did some research and found that they can change the sound signature, and that's when I ran across the Burson V6s. I decided to purchase a set of each for Vivids and Classics. I found all Vivids to be a bit overwhelming, all Classics a bit too rich. Classics in the I/V and Vivids in the LP lacked a bit of punch. When I reversed this, I felt it was perfect (for me, anyway). Later, I upgraded to the V7 pros, and it sounded even better. I was initially running with a pair of Audio Technica ad700x. I upgraded to a Sennheiser HD 6600S2, and that was even better. I have a 5.1 surround sound system in my room (Onkyo TX-NR6050 with Paradigm Cinema CT70 satellite speakers), so all I used the AE-9 for was headphones. Unfortunately, the ACM unit bit the dust a couple of months later. I decided to try their dacs. New to this, I purchased a demo unit (more than half off) of the Composer, believing it to have a headphone jack. I was wrong. I even purchased a set of V7s Classics. When I realized my mistake, I gifted it to my dad for his birthday/ Father's Day gift as both were around the corner. He, too, agreed on the orientation of the op-amps. I ultimately settled on the Playmate 2. I swapped out the op-amps from my sound card to my new dac, and I must say, it put the AE-9 to shame. I'm glad I switched. Don't get me wrong. The AE-9 is fantastic for a sound card, but I certainly didn't realize how much of an upgrade I was getting.

Who wins this battle for budget opamps? I've got Sparkos in one of my Class D amps (I LOVE THEM) but am looking for an alternative for my Aiyima A07 Pro. Thinking OPA828 V5. To be honest, the stock 5532's are subdued, not liking them.

I had A down as the standard NE5532 Op Amp in all but track 2. Think I preferred B single to A parallel. My favorites however were D F and G so smoother sounding amps, not a surprise as I prefer analogue.

Cool test, thanks. Do you think there's room to fit a small aluminum dip 6-8 heatsink on the Parallel N5532 op amps with the V3 Mono enclosure. If so, max height for aluminum heatsink? I guess you could try to get really crafty and fit a solid aluminum piece that would fit between the opamp and case, try to transfer heat directly to enclosure. tricky tho.

Hello, first of all, there is no one who makes a wide variety of detailed comparisons in opamps, it was a very nice comparison video. But it would be great if you write the opamp names like A,BC,D... It would be great if you at Least specify in the video description which opamp is playing while playing, thank you.
@obudaifourty97 ай бұрын
I was thinking the same.

The goal is to identify the opamps you prefer objectively, without the bias induced by knowing wich opamp you are listening.
@SERKAN_HOT347 ай бұрын
@@tofffsymagic1099 Yes, I partially agree, but it would be great if it was stated in the descriptions which opamp plays in the A,BC,D... options, because not everyone has the chance to buy expensive opamps and it is impossible for them to do this. It is also impossible for these opamps to recognize their sound, I look at the issue from this perspective. Of course, I respect the effort made, thank you very much.

Even better if you get the two ic opamps stick a piece of copper tape on top of both oamps making sure they're not going to touch any of the pins except the ground pin and solder it to the ground pin. and you can leave a gap between both of them it shouldn't be a problem still enough room with the pins just about also putting a small polystyrene cap across VCC plus a minus of 0.1uF makes a big difference reduces inductance

Paralleling 2 OpAmps reduces the noise (i think by the squareroot of 2, but i am not sure) and increases the output current the OpAmp can deliver to the load. So it is easyer to drive low impedance loads, but i don't think that this is significant for any better sound in this case, since the TPA3255 inputs has an input impedance of about 20k (according to the datasheet). But i won't do this with the discrete OpAmps, unless you really know what you are doing. But hey, if it helps 🙂

@lamprosantoniou78536 ай бұрын
Paralleling devices is not a new concept but in this case some precautions should be taken. The LT1028 datasheet should have something similar. The example with the TDA1543 is not an apples to apples comparison. The TDA has a current output and when paralleled the currents sum up. In the case of an op-amp the output is voltage. In a perfect world the output would be zero if the input was zero but in real life the output has a DC offset that varies between units. Connecting them directly will cause due to the voltage difference even if it is just a couple of mV a high current flowing from one output to the other. In most cases this can be mitigated using balast resistors.

Can you do a tutorial about the stacked NE5532 ? Do you also know if this can damage the amplifier ?
@VirtualHiFi5 ай бұрын
Hello, I'll update it in about 2 weeks. You can do it yourself by soldering 2 on top of each other. But I developed a converter so that you can use basically any opamps and parallel them. Also I created a Supersonic opamp that use 4 dual ne5532 in parallel and I'm testing them at the moment. They all will be available in about 2 weeks since I already have first batch ready.

I'm sure the op amps do indeed improve the performance. However, I must make a point that the rest of your system (DAC, Speakers, and upsampling to dsd 512 via HQ player) is what truly make these demos sound excellent, even with KZbin compresion. Those in the market for an inexpensive amp, such as Fosi, will not be pairing the amp with $15k worth of speaker, dac, upscaling music server. I'm far more interested in comparisons of Solid state amps and dacs in the $2-5k range. I appreciate your excellent hard work.
