Wanted to add my 2c about the Algarve and the Azores as have traveled both extensively. Did both off-season (April) and.....Algarve was actually fantastic off peak. Great food, relaxed vibe and not too touristy. Azores off season was pissing with rain, sideways, the whole time. It was very cool nonetheless, but it is not comparable to white sandy beaches. The Azores is a more adventurous destination. It is not for a relaxing beach holiday - the beaches are black sand and the Atlantic can get very angry. Can highly recommend staying at the Azores Wine Company in Pico - one of the most uniquely wonderful off-track hotel's I've ever been to. Also just want to mention there are definitely a few Madeira clips in that Azores section - they are not the same place!

People don't do enough research! You have to visit the very popular and obvious places ONCE like Venice, Paris, Rome and the like but then you should venture out to the less known places like Bergamo (Wonderful), Trieste, Abruzzo , Ravenna - those sort of places. You have to do your research first!

I've been to many of the "overcrowded" places(in high season), and each is spectacular. Often times, the key to enjoying these places during the Summer is to make sure you spend a couple days so you can enjoy the mornings and evenings before and after the bus and cruise ship tours invade these areas. For example Dubrovnik in Croatia(not mentioned) was unbearable during the day. Shoulder to shoulder in the streets. But we stayed within the walled city and the mornings and evenings were magical!

@graemefoxworthy2785Ай бұрын
Went to Kotor as part of a road trip at the end of August. Easily the busiest place we visited during the 3300 mile, 12 country trip. The roads were gridlocked, the beach was standing room only, the entrance into the old town was a queue. Why you ask? Cruise liners, up to 3 a day, unloading thousands of daytripping cruise liner tourists into a town which can't cope with the numbers. The cruise liners dominate the sky line, as unlike Dubrovnik or Venice, these monstrosities berth right across the road from the old town. Prices in the old town (and around the whole bay to be honest) were probably the most expensive we encountered on the trip. Kotor was the epitome of overtourism.

Although the Azores is Amazing, it is not really comparable with Algarve, because they are totally different types of holidays. I would suggest instead to go to "Costa Vicentina" in Alentejo and visit Porto Covo and the crystal clear waters there, or go to "Arrabida" in Setubal and Troia which are amazing as well with emerald crystal clear waters. If you want just the beach and relax, you can go to Porto Santo island in Madeira. It is basically 9km of empty turquoise waters. The reason the beach is mostly empty is because of the lack of accomodation there. So yeah, if you want to go to Porto Santo, you need to book in advance. Last year I spent a whole week in Porto Santo, and it was amazing. No crowds, and in the best beach of Portugal.

Worth visiting once to see Pompeii, Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius - and possibly Napoli if you're brave.

@@sleepybubbi9638 There is a lot of organized crime in Napoli, and a lot of petty crime as well. People generally can be very aggressive for trivial reasons, inconsiderate and rude, dirty (like throwing garbage everywhere) and will take the opportunity to cheat you if they can. Southern Italy has lots of beauty but unfortunately it's quite poor and many people will take advantage of other people if given the opportunity. Case in point, a taxi driver dropped off my mother in law and raced away with her luggage as soon as she set foot outside the taxi - with the door still open and her screaming. We only got the bags back (with no apology) by waving down another taxi and forcing him to radio the original driver with the threat that we'd call police and had photos of them both (a bluff).

This year we're seeing fewer tourists as people wake up to the fact that other places are much better value and more welcoming (Greece, for example).
