I agree about John Scalzi. I read 3 of his books in a week lounging around the pool or shore side in Maui just a few weeks ago. Perfect reads for holiday. After I read The Kaiju Preservation Society the hills all looked like resting kaijus....it was the reading highlight of many many decades of vacations to the Hawaiian Islands.

Ha, I also have ADHD so gripping books that will send me into hyperfocus are just my thing. Some assume those need to be bad, pulpy sensationalist books with no substance, but no. They just need to be fun, beautifully written, engaging books. Thanks for the recs! Btw Andea Bartz on the cover of Delicate Condition is a thriller writer! And she's sister to Julia Bartz. They both write about things that happen to women or from a distinct female perspective. And Julia wrote The Writing Retreat, which is absolutely unhinged. I can't decide if it's good or bad but gosh, did I have fun with it 😂

I’ve bought so many books based on your recommendations. As another commenter said…your tastes are very similar to mine. I always look forward to seeing what you have to say. I much prefer having a personal recommendation, and am more inclined to believe you telling me “It’s a page turner” rather than the much used tropes printed on the books. The one for me is “New York times no.1 bestseller” 🙄 It seems everything lately is described as that. Thanks for another great video Willow 💜

I keep meaning to read Small Angry Planet, but I'm kind of daunted by the prospect of starting a four-book series at the moment. So thanks for emphasizing the things you did about it, you made it a lot easier for me to start. I think the most notably "page-turner" book I've read lately was Elder Race, by Adrian Tchaikovsky, which I read in a single morning. The chapters alternate two POVs in a way I don't think I've ever seen before, and the way Tchaikovsky has them compliment and collide throughout the book is mesmerizing.

I LOVED Yellowface also, but the person I recommended it to absolutely hated it, which I also understand. I think some people just cannot wrap their heads ( imaginations?) around despicable protagonists. I happen to love deeply flawed and morally ambiguous characters so it was right up my alley. Like you, I didn't enjoy Poppy Wars at all. I guess I will have to pick up Babel now!

I would have to disagree with you about The Remains of the Day. I really liked that book but the book was the opposite of a page turner for me... like I would have to force myself to sit up and read it because I know it's profound and all but it's tiresome to listen to Stevens' self-deception and long-winded explanation. It does get better towards the middle of the book when you're sufficiently invested in the character and the world they live in. I think it's also true for the other two Ishiguro books I've read: Klara and the Sun and Never let me go (the latter would be one of my favourite books of all time and the reason I decided to read The Remains of the Day at all)

I really like your videos, your book recommendations are interesting and I've seen some books that I haven't heard of before. I didn't really like If We Were Villains, The Secret History is a much better piece of literature. IWWV felt a little... I don't know, cheap maybe? Too similar to the Tartt's book and not in a good way, in my opinion. And the characters were weak and the only trait of the bad guy was that he's just BAD for the sake of being bad. There, I said it, my unpopular opinion about If We Were Villains. But it's just my opinion and everybody has their own :)
@WillowTalksBooks2 ай бұрын
It’s a more popular opinion than you think, trust me! I loved IWWV because I was a college student studying Shakespeare so I have a kinship with them. And also because it leans into the thriller more and I loved that

@Cosmic19465 ай бұрын
I’m shocked-I’ve actually read the first three in the list! 😄 (and loved them!) Kaiju Preservation Society was such fun, I loved that as the reader we got to discover the world right alongside the narrator. I didn’t realize how reworked A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder was for the U.S., which seems very patronizing indeed. I enjoyed the second one too, but I haven’t finished the third yet; it takes a turn in the middle that I’m not sure I can follow, but once I can get it from the library again I’ll try my best. And as for Delicate Condition-*loved* it, but beware, the AHS adaptation is bonkers-it’s all over the place, changed significantly in ways that don’t serve the original text, characters melded and reshaped in strange ways, and though the series hasn’t finished yet (they’re just now releasing the second half of it in the U.S. right now) I can’t see how it will wrap in a way that was as satisfying as the book. But I think that’s the risk with adaptation, so mileage will vary from viewer to viewer, of course 🙂 off to read Yellowface, I’ve had it in my TBR for ages! Thanks for another marvelous round of recs ♥️

I'm very suspicious of such literature. I'm one of those that loves a profound emotional journey covering a lot of psychological territory. I sometimes put a book down for an hour or two to process what went on. For `Notes on an execution` there was one chapter (I think it's one of the best chapters in modern literature) when I had to take 24 hours off from the book to unpack it all. I don't read to turn pages I read to turn emotions, happenings, relationships, profundity, ideas and glitches in the systems. So no, I don't get it.
