Sharing my notes here 😀. Keep shooting peeps. 1. SMARTPHONE GEAR - 3:30 - Top smartphones will deliver good results - Buying good quality stabilizer > Smartphone Gimbal - Manual Camera App = Moment Pro Cam, Filmic Pro, Bestcam - Pro Camera, DJI MIMO - ND Filter - Third party lenses - Tripod - Microphone - Portable battery charger 2. CAMERA SETTINGS - 7:30 - Highest Resolution (1080p to 4k) - Highest bitrate - Frame Rate - 24fps realtime, 60fps slow motion - White Balance - Shutter Speed and ISO > use ND Filter if needed 3. NAILING CORRECT EXPOSURE - 10:05 - Take the time to get a clean exposure 4. FOCUS - 11:21 - Locking the focus to prevent video from beating 5. LIGHTING - 12:12 - Shooting in ideal conditions - Prioritizing the best locations and lighting conditions - Shoot at golden hour or Shade/Cloud Coverage 6. CINEMATIC MOVEMENTS - 13:30 - Knowing how to incorporate smooth movements - Avoid these: - Using a low quality gimbal - The in camera stabilization is conflicting with the gimbal stabilization - Don't know how to operate the gimbal properly - Having gimbal doesn't mean that you will instantly get cinematic movement. You will need to constantly practice. 7. FOCAL LENGTHS AND LENS OPTIONS - 15:18 - Utilizing the phone's lenses - Main camera lens always have the best quality - Using third party lens like moment lenses 8. COMPOSITION - 16:47 - Make sure you fill the frame with subjects - Don't just digitally zoom like your mom - Use foreground - Use rule of thirds - Use leading lines 9. SHOOT TO EDIT - 18:20 - Ask yourself why you are shooting. Will it benefit to the content that you will make? - Do a little bit of pre-planning before start shooting - What emotions do I want to convey? - Always shoot more than you need. - Dont just shoot to shot. Always think the purpose of each shot. 10. CAPTURING PROFESSIONAL AUDIO - 20:02 - Learning how to sound design - Make sure that your mic is as close as possible to your subject. - You can use external mics (lav mic, shotgun mic)

Honestly the biggest tell is that the smartphone footage is waaaay over sharpened. If you can get the exposure right and use compositions where the small sensor deep depth of field isn't noticeable, you wouldn't be able to tell, if it weren't for the sharpening.

I'll add a couple: anti-flicker and de-sharpen. Smartphone footage flickers a lot, especially in higher contrast scenes, but I found the anti-flicker in Premiere does a pretty good job at removing this. Smartphone footage also tends to be way too sharp. When that's toned down, it looks a lot more natural. With my S21 the stabilization is pretty darn impressive. Unless you need to be walking for your shot, you really don't even need a gimbal, especially if you shoot in 60 fps for slow mo. Add in warp stabilizer and it looks like it was on a gimbal! I've been sleeping on what my phone can do, but after reviewing some video I took with it, I'm gonna start using it more!

I would say a bonus tip is to lean in to the quality. Instead of trying to make the phone look good, just use it a a handheld little story machine, like for flashbacks or some handheld action to create emotion, make the viewer feel like they are there. Thats how I use the smartphone atleast :)

Being an owner of multiple gimbals it's better to spend an additional $20 to $30 more than the DJI Osmo 3 or 4 and buy a high quality mid size gimbal like the Feiyutech G6 Max or the Moza Mini P. They are not bulky and still small in size and portable. With these you can be future proof and attach lenses , ND filters , cages and microphones without counterweights and risk burning up the motors. Also you can attach cameras if you want to upgrade so you're not stuck to a smartphone only gimbal and then have to buy another.

Wow, this is really impressive. I'm so glad I came across your video. This is why content creators need hardware nerds! The kind that are smart in translating hardware technicalities into simpler terms. I had a limited budget as a world traveler and I brought the wrong gear (insta360 X3) even after countless hours of reviewing the best action camera on Earth. Because no one spoke about its negative aspects of vlogging and the editing work. Now I have to sell it for a huge loss. I was thinking of using my iPhone 14Pro coupled with the latest DJI gimbal and adding in the best wireless audio from Rode. I needed to know with full confidence if my footage could beat the few thousand dollars cameras I couldn't afford. I was strategizing on using Adobe Premium Pro and upgrading my video editing skills, sharpening my music pairing intuition. Your production was the greatest testament, it was the best 25 mins I have ever spent on KZbin. You did so well in explaining and showcasing everything (The sales pitch was pretty subtle yet such a powerful presentation). Thanks for helping me to trust that what I have, is already a powerhouse! :)🕊

This is amazing and super helpful. Question: Everything I’ve shot has been with an iPhone 12 Pro, but is it really worth a £1000+ investment in a camera and lens when you can get such great shots on phones? Would love some advice from anyone in the comments
@abigailokoiobuli89452 жыл бұрын
It's a little late but here's my two cents. Phone cameras have come a long way and are a great option to start with if you can't afford camera gear or if you just want good quality videos without getting into all the techy stuff. However, there's a reason why all the top KZbinrs and professional videographers use actual cameras and it's simply because they are better in terms of quality. Dedicated cameras give you more control over your image and provide higher image quality. Thanks to their bigger sensors they provide high dynamic range, better colour accuracy, great low-light shooting, shoot higher frame rates, shoot in flat profiles/ log, have manual controls, etc. To put it simply, phones can take great pictures and videos, but they're targeted towards consumers who couldn't care less about photography/videography, hence, they lack any real specs or qualities that give the shooter full creative control. Cameras on the other hand are built with cinematographers in mind and therefore are better equipped to handle all kinds of creative work in the best way possible while giving the highest quality image.

Great tips! I love these kind of videos with smartphones. I don't know if this will sound like a stupid question but which aspect ratio is the best to shoot in with phones?
@SynchroM3h2 жыл бұрын
The aspect ratio is more important for the output video content (i.e TV or Phone and then TikTk or YT). If you are looking to do full cinematic, then 16:9 and 21:9 if you have the professional kit. Once you know which platform you are looking to show your video, then the aspect ratio will be key to ensure it fits on the screen / video. Each platform provides its recommended aspect ratio. 👍
