@@quiettornado1970 That has always bothered me. Saying something like that to a beginner is just plain awful. My grandmother was very similar when I started learning things. I kind of realized early on though that she was saying it so that I wouldn't learn and know something she didn't. I find that tends to be the case with a lot of people. They are trying to stop you from "being better" than them in their mind.

@@suzywoozy2694 unfortunately for me, it was the 'advice' and unofficially mandatory standard put on me by my parents. Any time they would ask what I wanted to do for a career, I wasn't allowed to bring up art at all. If I did, it was immediately shot down as a childish dream, rather than a legitimate goal. Sadly, I didn't have the energy, support or self confidence to contradict my parents and wasted nearly ten years of my life ignoring my passion and losing my skill. I only just decided this last few months to go back to drawing and learning how to paint.

Great advice on how to date your art and guarantee it won’t be relevant in a year.
@SebastianSeanCrow5 жыл бұрын
4:19 this one is always a double edged sword. One one hand, creating popular work gets you lots of money. On the other, if you don’t know much about your subject or you don’t like it, it can be easy to tell because they’re isn’t any... soul behind it. If you create things that you love, you’re more likely to be proud of it. If you only create popular things, you may become rich/be able to support yourself/gain a large following fairly easily, but you could end up hating what you’re doing. Some artists I follow will create mostly fanart cuz that’s how they support themselves, but they’ll always make sure to create fanart of series they love or characters they like, that way they can still be proud of that piece. Finding a nice balance between popularity and what you love is usually ideal, but it can’t always be done. You should always think about what matters more: popularity/easy to sell or market pieces or pieces that you truly felt/loved, even if they’re obscure or unpopular.

I am sooo glad to have found your channel. Finally a couple that speaks the reality of what artists go through. I have had so much bad advice that it literally makes my head spin. If someone doesn't "create" art, they shouldn't have any advice to dispense about art. If they are creative, then they can share what has "worked" for them, but cookie cutters are not for art, they are for dough. You are soooo right about finding "your kind of people", bad advice is nothing more than undermining for a person who is creative. We are all different, and express ourselves differently. Art is a mode of expression, not a "job". Great video!!!

For the most part, if someone offers me advice (creatively speaking) I will listen to what they have to say for the sake of learning. I let them express their idea and answer with "Interesting!" or "Wow, that's a different idea." but I really try to understand what their view point is and how it compares to my own. Sometimes they mention a point I never thought of, and sometimes it contradicts my own viewpoint, but at the end of the day I get to decide whether to follow the advise or not and have knowledge of how the other person views me and my art. It helps me analyze what type of artist I am at that moment and which direction to continue, because I want my art to attract those who really resonate with my art and vibes. If they give advise on the business side, it's a little harder because people are so hardwired to stay with the "Tried and true" traditional routes. I've had so many tell me to "Get a real job!" or "You need to do this and that to succeed!" and I usually try to calmly explain that the art world is different than a basic 9-5 job or selling cookie cutter merchandise, but people don't want to listen because it challenges their believes since they haven't tried it themselves. Or if they have tried but never were(aren't) successful, they could be bitter and just repeating the same stuff other people told them with a "If I couldn't do it, then why should you?" attitude. At that point you learn who you can't talk seriously about your art career with. Don't bother asking for advice or complain about art problems to them since they won't understand/care anyway. If they keep asking you about it just give them the simple "I'm still doing what I love, creating art. What about you? How's your job going?" and they will either end the conversation quickly or just complain about their own problems. Best thing to do is limit your time around those type of people (even if they are family) they will just bring you down and cause you to start doubting yourself, and you don't need that, it kills creativity.

And on a side note, i draw big sexy women/pin ups because i have found out that works to make money for me, yeah i need to update my horror pages a bit but everyone keeps going for the boobs. It wasn’t about me and my art though, it was about my daughter’s acceptance to a performing arts college. Since it was about my daughter, I had an inner monologue that was really rude, while outwardly I kindly educated my colleague how my daughter’s degree would open many avenues of opportunity. A plan B was unnecessary when there was such a multitude of possible plan A’s. I went home, told my husband, and we shared rude dialogue. I didn’t look up to that person anymore.

Sometimes it’s just more or less intentionally reflective, but it’s always reflective. Anyways.

I did a few months of practice and tutorials and then I started trying to create my own but I was just starting them and never really getting anywhere so my bad advice was that I need to finish a painting before I start my next one and the only thing that did was stop me from painting. So it took me a couple months and then I switched it around and now when I feel like painting I paint whatever I can whether it's my main painting I have going or smaller practice ones or even painting rocks... to this day I've only finished one painting lol but I'm still painting and creating all the time ❤

I got into the self help scene a couple years ago and "The One Thing" book by Gary Keller was a fav in alot of circles. As an entrepreneur starting a business kind of picking a thing to focus on so you can be better than your competitors is what I think the idea is, dedication to one thing in order to be the best. The idea that I can't excel at anything because I'm diverse in my art is ludicrous though. Someday I will be know for a specific art style I'm sure, but gosh I would get bored if I only did one thing. That advice is terrible in my opinion.

Sometimes I feel like judgemental silence is even worse than bad advise. Your art, your life, your decision.

I'm a healthcare attorney with a similar story to yours. Honestly, I've found it's easier not to tell people. You can just say you're consulting in your field. It's sorta true, right? You just changed fields! Seriously though, sometimes facing people's judgement simply isn't worth the mental drain. Our society prizes money so much, it's nearly impossible for them to understand why we'd leave 6-figure jobs. Unless there's a benefit for you telling them, you may find more peace in keeping your own counsel.

Consulting but changed fields! Brilliant!! Yeah, I think I’ve come to terms with the fact the mental energy exhausted on people who don’t understand just isn’t worth it. It always take a bit of time to regain my confidence after someone’s negative reaction. Keep going!!!!! I hope everything works out for you!!! X

This is my first time on your channel. I don't know how old you are, but I was stationed at Cory station back in '94. I used to larp at a comic shop and partied at Night Owl. I was all about electronics back then, but now I am all about art. I really like this video. I am going to need to check out more of your videos. I would think that you would be able to sell a wide variety of art, between the older people from all over, and the military (from all over).

When I first started my (old) etsy shop in 2013, I did sculpting. Sculpting is honestly my main love. I worked with polymer, and I was (am?) really good. I haven't done it in a while now.. but I loved it SO much. In the beginning, everyone completely looked down on it. They literally told me to stop playing with play dough and get a real job. Now, I understand that this isn't necessarily advice for being an artist. More like advice on how NOT to be an artist (*insert eye roll here*) But it really discouraged me. I was 24, I found something I was basically addicted to in a really healthy, inspirational way, and I wanted everyone to appreciate the work I was putting into it as much as I did. I worked in tiny little details and LOTS of texture. And sure, I improved over the years. But because no one around me took me seriously or supported me, and I didn't really know where to go for education on being an artist, I fell completely off of it. I didn't know how to take good pictures (I had a shit camera anyway) I didn't know how to do things, I was afraid to put things out there for fear of being copied.. it was just a mess. One day I'll start sculpting again though, because I really did love it so much.

Thank you, great message...Art is personal and is the of the Artists personal perspective.

I can relate, I've been told: -"Most of your sales will be making things you don't like making that are popular, like pets, you should make pets. Painting things you feel like painting won't sell." ...but that's most of what sells 🤣 Though that's not the main motivation anyways... -When I started painting full time... "You can't paint everyday!" The list goes on... Appreciate you guys! You're hilarious. Keep up the good work!

I agree with everything you guys said! Except the Pensacola one because as a consumer I like that idea.

All of the advice shown in this vid: Spend all of your time on one thing to get good at it. Create what people want to buy and not what you want to create. Art that captures history or has political atmosphere is the only art that matters. Go to big art dealers and schmooze. You should sign *insert where you are from* so people know where the art was made. Weird stuff doesn’t sell, you should make things are familiar to people. You should put your art for sale everywhere online. You should be on every social media platform platform available You cant trust anyone. You should focus on repairs than more than artistic creations. Repairs are the bread and butter.

lol I love you guys so much! Great vibes! One of the worst pieces of advice I got was to do a bunch of spec work. I was never into it and it's such a waste of time rather than doing my own art.

WOW!!! Well done!!! I’ve heard most of them... and I agree with your thoughts on all of them.... I want to create stuff that matters to me... and I want to create in whatever medium/expression is appropriate for whichever project(s) I happen to be working on. And I love your T-Shirt’s message. ;) I create, weird, “Dark” art, sometimes, too. I think this is a really really good video, full of very good messages. The most important being “be yourself, create your stuff, your way”.

My mother was a failed, and bitter artist... Her advice always was: "People only buy pretty pictures..." That and: "The only way to succeed as an artist is to already have money, and to have connections..." In my life the worst advice I've ever received was. "Oh, yeah. That'll sell..." Meaning: 1. Sell as many of that one piece as you can.... Forget about creativity, you can be creative when the production end of things is exhausted and you have to come up with something new. 2. Hard sell: EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME! 3. Sell it anyway, a sale is a sale: It doesn't matter that you're not ready to sell a piece, because there are some design flaws, or it's an experimental piece that still needs work. I can't sacrifice quality or integrity for a few dollars. I know it seems odd to have three points to the message "Oh, yeah. That'll sell...." And believe me there are more, but I think you get the point. Hugs to both of you!🤗

Oh I got a piece of great bad advice! I make goofy shirts for women who weight train and a guy at the gym told me that the designs were really cute but that I should get rid of the barbells because women don’t lift and that I should manufacture the shirts as cheaply as possible and then go sell them on tables outside of the abandoned KMart! Just found your channel and am loving it! Shameless book plug YES!! Other advice that I get all the time that I truly hate is “why don’t you just put this text on a thirt that says -insert quote- I see this all the time everywhere so it must sell really well!!” Thanks for the video!!

I only heard the 2nd one for writing and it completely keeps me from writing (the rest of this also goes for #6). I have some fun and creative ideas. But, some aspects you would first think “oh, this is for elementary school” then other parts are super serious about real problems in the world for middle or high schoolers. I’ve always heard that no one will read and enjoy my writing if it isn’t for a specific age range. And I can’t do that. My writing is based off of my child-like imagination and creativity and joy, but also part of it is real life problems that are ‘real’. So it’s always split between “oh, that’s Zootopia” and “oh, that’s retrograde amnesia and depression, and the main character goes to jail”

I don't know if this is bad advice or not? I hear alot of "adapt or die" to change with the times. I refused that free shipping bs on Etsy as one of those adapt or die moments. I once worked for an employer that wanted to cram so much info into a space. (I do graphic design as a full time job.) He thought it was getting more $$ for the space the more he crammed in it. Not many people realize "white space" is much better to the eye and the marketing message comes across better too. He made some side comment about my designs being "french" in a negative tone so from there on out I would add a subliminal(opace) "fleur de lis" in the marketing material until the day I left the job. lol. I still laugh about that.

Having multiple creative abilities and outlets can function as inspiration that informs everything you create. It can also add depth to a project you are exploring...in my humble opinion. 💗

this is great, thanks for sharing. my worst advice is your #1 - just focus on one thing. i dabble in a lot of different things which used to give me anxiety. recently i accepted it and embraced it and the anxiety is gone. i dont make a living off mine but i imagine this freeing up the mind would help sales. people can read that confidence and they like it.
