That 42 car drove me insane. I remember seeing it during practice/qualifying and for years searched and searched for it, only to come across a skin someone made for NASCAR 2003. Seeing a real picture of it, it’s a bit cathartic and proves 12 year old me didn’t imagine it.

Elliot Sadler’s Pocono crash with Kurt Busch comes to mind for me. This one bugged me since I watched it live when I was 4 years old. I remember thinking there was no way not a single camera captured what was supposedly the hardest hit ever. I bet it’s lost not missing, and the broadcasters made an impromptu call not to show it. Maybe it looked REALLY bad.
@rdfox76
@rdfox76 2 жыл бұрын
I doubt it. The cameramen were probably all following Kurt's car, because he was the bigger name and spun earlier, and if they were laser-focused in on him, they might not have even noticed Sadler until afterwards.

I think another piece of lost media that I'd love to see is Silicon Motor Speedway stuff. The only stuff that exists other than home videos is the second half of the replay intros, the replay extros, and some early 1997 videos from their website. The full intro and videos from the 2000s have been lost mainly due to Flash's discontinuation and the fact the replays were stored on VHS.

One piece of lost media I am surprised wasn't mentioned is the 1991 Cup Series spring race at Atlanta. Just like with the 2 2000s Busch races mentioned, footage does exist of the race. However, after just 50 laps, NASCAR decided to postponed the race to Monday due to an incoming rain shower. ABC was not allowed to pick up the race from where it was due to contract obligations, and apparently, no other network did. The race did finish on Monday, with Ken Schrader taking his 3rd and penultimate Cup Series victory, with the only proof of the race actually being finished, being newspapers from the same week.

The in car of Gordon obviously is a NASCAR cover up. They did the same thing when Elliott Sadler flipped during practice at Michigan. Elliott says he saw the footage, and it showed the car flying higher than the catch fence. NASCAR said no one else would ever see the footage. Cover up for insurance purposes.

Not NASCAR, but the in-car footage from Dan Wheldon's fatal crash is lost because there's no way Indycar or ESPN are going to give it up. The broadcast was riding along with him when the accident happens, at which point they cut away to a wide angle, but there's an episode of a Discovery show called Nerve Center that stays with him all the way up to when he hits the car in front of him. How they got this footage I have no idea, but footage past where the broadcast cut away potentially up to when the camera was destroyed definitely exists.

You know, most of these could probably be solved by simply requesting that NASCAR put their copy of it up as one of their classic-race KZbin posts. Some might be more difficult to get than others, but a number of these, I suspect just two or three people contacting them to ask if they'd put the complete footage up would get results. Particularly Nazareth and the '92 Atlanta Busch race, though they might lack commentary (Nazareth because they realized they'd never air the full race, just a quick highlight package, and Atlanta if ABC intended to have commentary done on Sunday if need be, meaning they don't have to get the commentators to the track for Saturday's race).

I'm glad I'm too young because as someone with over 5 thousand videos from tik tok saved to a harddrive and would totally have recorded every nascar race and probably make a false copyright claim thank god that never happened.

I think I know why I find lost media so ominous. If you go on to the internet, you can find just about anything. And at least someone has archived even the most obscure videos and photos in existence. But the fact that a major American sport has footage of races lost to time, and they're absolutely nowhere to be found, is scary in some weird way...

The 1968 Daytona 500 has various narration-styled films and even the highlight clip from the 50th Daytona 500 Box Set from 2008, but the full ABC Coverage of the 1968 Daytona 500 is hard to find on KZbin

A couple of ones that I kind of find interesting (might edit this if I remember something else) 2008 Busch Series at Mexico City: This race was on KZbin at some point I think, but nowadays all we can find is the finish of that race I'm pretty sure somebody might have the race as it was pretty recent (EDIT: It was found some months ago, just forgot about this comment and that's why I haven't updated it yet lol: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJeQaY2Ym92DhKMsi=W0Fl95waqm3Tf6l1) 1995 Winston 100 at Charlotte: This race is mostly known for the gruesome crash that killed Russell Phillips. This race was supposed to be broadcasted on tape delay by Prime Network I believe, but the broadcast was left after the crash and it was never shown (although the crash itself can be found on the Web, even the full results from the race are missing) It is likely the broadcast was destroyed (hopefully) so it's impossible there is footage of this one 2017 Mid-Ohio Challenge (Xfinity): While you can find footage of this race on KZbin, the whole Stage 1 and almost all of the Stage 2 are missing. Not sure why is this, although I know the full broadcast was uploaded at some point according to Racing Reference

Geez my mind is racing now about your #1 clip. I had no idea! I’ve always known it was a massive hit and most likely played a huge role in Jeff’s back pain and ultimately his “early” retirement but now I have so many questions! What manner did his body move in that car, so much so that Hendrick asked the footage to be locked away. This only raised more questions for me. Jeff is one tough sumbitch, way more so than most people gave him credit for. He took some serious licks in his career. Scary though, from the sounds of this story he may have been closer to a career ending if not life ending shot than any of us knew.

I was at the truck race in 96. It rained sooooo much. I don't remember if we stuck around for the finish. I do however remember seeing one of the smaller teams trucks on a roll back driving down the highway after we left. I loved Nazareth. Such a unique track.

I had virtually all 3 series recorded from early 80's through 1999 but the ta0es were stored in my mother's basement . I even watched 1996 NW about 6 years ago but when I moved to California 4 years ago I decided due to cost of moving 20 ones of VHS Tapes and 23 boxes of Kenner Starting Lineups were victims . Only had room for so much 300+ Diecast and many McFarlane were saved along with Playboy Pinball machine . I wish I knew .
