I believe they reclasssified fungi as their own kingdom. When I was a kid, fungi was considered part of the plant kingdom. They were considered “dependent plants” as opposed by chlorophyll containing ones which were classified as independent plants.

That last one was crazy, never heard of that one. Black walnut flesh is used to make preserves and historically a ketchup was made from of it. My guess is that cooking it takes away the toxicity

Holy hell!! Simon just DXed a rash I had last year. I was cleaning up a black walnut tree and all the old walnut pieces. I had arms full of the black walnut debris and I later broke out with tons of blisters all over my arms and I was coughing and felt sick. -- The Dr said I must have gotten into poison ivy but I've never been allergic to poison ivy. -- I bet it was the black walnut tree.

Just because you were "allergic" to it before every encounter with it increases the chance of being affected by it. Saw my boyscouts master who yearly would pick fresh ivy and rub it on his face well what do u know science is right 12th year of doing it he had his whole right cheek blister and had to go to hospital to drain it. I'm size of an orange on his cheek.

I grew up in an area where black walnut trees were numerous, and we had them in my yard as a child. People would collect them and turn them in for money. I think I remember people getting rashes from handling them, although I definitely threw plenty of cracked ones as a kid without harm. I don't recall anyone in my area ever dying or becoming ill, but we knew they were toxic. Can still smell the acrid odor of our lawn filled with fallen green and black pods.

We had a 100' tall black walnut when I was younger. The husks would often grow a bit bigger than a baseball, and caused many dents and a couple cracked windows on our vehicles. Come fall the husks stunk so bad and there was so much of that black gunk we had to shovel the fallings and power wash the area under it daily.

Kudzu is full of nutrients. The root is a great substitute for corn starch as an elmusifier but actually provides nutrients. The young leaves are great in salads and the blossoms make a great jam. There have even been studies that show that tea made from the leaves help alcoholics drink less.

Kudzu was given to the US as a gift. For awhile it was seen as a wonder crop useful for food, rope, etc etc. The problem is... Invasive. its survival stratagy vs its native predation is 'I WILL GROW SO FAST YOU CANNOT GET RID OF ALL OF ME!' With nothing that really will eat it in the amounts that it evolved to handle? It spreads. NIGHTMARISHLY fast.

On the family property on which I was raised, there is a *very* old Black Walnut tree that is also rumored to possibly have the body of an old peddler beneath it - likely from the period before or shortly after West Virginia gained statehood. Vanishing peddlers were a rather common thing back in those days.

We just had to cut down our Black Walnut Tree. Squirrels were trying to bury them in our backyard, and we didn't want the nuts killing our vegetables. My wife loves gardening, and we were able to plant certain flowers around the tree. Surprisingly, we were able to plant Ramps from the grocery store, and they have come back each of the last 2 years.

I can’t believe the Manchineel tree didn’t make this list! The sap can cause skin lesions, if it is burned the smoke can cause blindness, and even water running off the leaves can cause skin burns! The sap from the Manchineel tree was used by the Calusa in Florida to coat the tips of their arrows, and this was the ultimate cause of Ponce de Leon’s death after a battle with the Calusa!

You forgot the gympie-gympie plant. The gympie-gympie plant is notorious for its extremely painful sting which may leave victims suffering for weeks or even months. It is reputed to be the most venomous plant in Australia, if not the world. There are tales of people committing suicide to stop the pain. Where I live we have a lot kudzu in Georgia & I seen parts of forests cover in the stuff. I thought about eating it since it's edible but other plants like poison ivy & I think I seen the poisonous chinese wisteria mix in with the plant makes me not want to risk getting kill.
