In this video, I'll walk thru 10 or more proven hopper - dropper rigs...including my all-time favorite rig. The hopper - dropper rig is a super technique for covering water and learning a stream. It's my go-to method for first visit streams from the end of June thru October when fish are more aggressive and will actively move to feed. The hopper-dropper rig allows me to fish a stream quickly but also effectively, taking advantage of a fish's willingness to hunt down its meal rather than wait for a bug to drift into its feeding window. On return trips, I might decide on a different strategy based on the info I gathered from the first visit and time of year.

Great video, Drew! I’ve been a big fan of hopper-dropper rigs for a long time as well. In high mountain streams and lakes in MT, WY, and AB my go-to is a size 10-12 Adams Irresistible with a size 14-16 generic nymph like the Pheasant Tail, and like you I’m big on tungsten beads. I’m gonna look in on your tying videos to get some new hopper patterns now.

Caught several trout using my usual euro- nymphing rig on the Naches river this week. When I noticed that several were in shallow water below a riffle I figured a dry fly should get their attention too. Based on your superb videos, I built an 8.5 Rainwater Rod this spring and tied up some top-shelf hoppers using your tying video and, sure enough, got hits right away and caught my first trout on a dry fly I tied myself -- I'm a convert! Thanks so much!

Interesting (and at first sight very plausible theory): big fish come to the surface to take big baits because of the energy efficiency. However..., my experience is that I catch the real big ones mostly on (very) small nymphs (size 14-16). Often same with the dry ones. Do you have an explanation for that?

Hey Drew I’ve tied up a dozen top shelf hoppers size 12 according to your video. The first dropper fly I attached to the hopper was the black one you recommend in this video (#16 jig hook,3 wraps of 0.02 lead wire,3mm T bead) Cast it out appears like the hopper is struggling to hold the fly up.Two more casts and the whole rig including the hopper sunk.Surely with 4mm foam on the hopper it should easily stay afloat with the fly?Any advise?
