Idk about you or other blind people. By since I’m legally blind and can fake being sighted pretty well, anytime I tell someone I’m blind they tend to respond with “oh I’m blind too.” No. No. No. you have poor vision that gets corrected to average when you put in contacts. That’s different.
@sadcat36025 жыл бұрын
My dad’s legally blind or at least he was when he was a kid and he prefers his contacts to his glasses. My eyesight is only slightly better so I’m not technically legally blind but I’m pretty damb close.
@copicgirl80575 жыл бұрын
Really, people say that? That is SO rude!!! My partner is legally nearly blind (he has under ten degrees of his field of sight left); he has usher syndrome and so he also is hard of hearing. I know, he can see in the center. I have worked as an optician some years ago and the dioptries don't say nothing about being "blind" or not. My sister has 10 dioptries and has a better vision than a lot of other people. Blindness or legally blindness is something you can't correct with glasses. People have to learn this.
@jacquelinesmith-jackson28155 жыл бұрын
CopicGirl Sadly that statement is not always true. In some cases someone being legally blind can be corrected with glasses. Try to explain it this way, try looking at something through your elbow or your nose. It just doesn't work. When Molly says that she can't see, it means that she cannot see, and some crazy people out there think she can see colors or faces. But that statement is wrong. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 So someone with astigmatism can drive a car their entire life, while other people cannot. But science has created self driving cars, I don't really understand that.

And if I say glasses wouldn’t work for me, they even ask secondary questions like, “well can’t you get like lasik eye surgery or something like that? Because that sucks, you should do something about it.” Ugh. That can also be offensive, because as if I’d choose this for myself if I had the choice, right? It also makes me wonder if people think I’m dumb asking about glasses. I mean, do people generally walk around with bad eyesight not knowing that glasses exist and could help them? It doesn’t even make sense.

I find that using body language when explaining scoliosis is more effective than just saying, “It’s when the spine curves in a way it shouldn’t.” I draw an imaginary snakey line down my front to illustrate the direction the spine curves, and rarely does anyone say they think they have it, too ☝️
@xanderpatterson47295 жыл бұрын
I’m actually worried I have it lmfao. Ik my spine isn’t straight, and never has been, but I’ve also never been actually tested for it lmao
@HopeUnquenchable5 жыл бұрын
Alexander Denver, a very simple preliminary testing can be done at home, if your parents or siblings (or even a friend you don’t mind seeing you with your shirt off) would be willing to assist you. You have to be shirtless, so they can clearly see your back, but they should stand in front of you, facing you as you bend straight forward to touch your toes (keep your feet together, with your knees slightly bent). Ask them to tell you if the top of your rounded back looks level, or if it appears higher/lower on one side. Hope that makes sense. If both sides of your back aren’t level with each other when you do this exercise, it’s likely you do have scoliosis and should see a specialist to confirm the condition and advise you on your options to manage/correct it☝️
@KristineKade5 жыл бұрын

Talk to me about autism. I would like to ask how do people with autism see things or like do they understand things differently than other people? I just wanted to say that I have a mobility disability
@angielopez13415 жыл бұрын
And also being a disabled person I find it very hard when I’m talking about myself and I’m comparing myself to other people who don’t have disabilities and sometimes i’ll try to explain to people for example like I can’t walk as well as normal people can and It bothers me that I say normal people because nobody is normal everyone is their own unique person but I never think of another way of saying other people who don’t have disabilities but like in another way. So I wanted to ask, when you explain to another person who doesn’t have your kind of disability or any disability at all, do you say normal people or something else?
@Catmum19985 жыл бұрын
Angie Lopez in terms of ASD most people (myself included) would refer to non-autistics as ‘neurotypical’ I have Aspergers and I would say that I experience the world differently to neurotypicals? I find it very difficult to read facial expressions, tone of voice and body language. Eg I might think someone is angry when actually they’re just tired or concentrating. I can also get easily overloaded with anything sensory such as bright lights, strong smells and too much noise (concerts are hell!) there are a lot of autism stereotypes like rainman and sheldon cooper from Big Bang theory, a lot of these aren’t necessarily true and actually quite irritating. I’m terrible at maths and physics, I’m also very disorganised 😂 I have some social skills and I sometimes understand sarcasm but I just have to work a bit harder and I get more tired out after socialising than a neurotypical. These are just a few things I can thing of off the top of my head and are completely different for each individual. Sorry that was a bit of an essay!
@angielopez13415 жыл бұрын
Jessica Francis oh ok. Bright lights make dizzy and nauseous and loud noises are the worst. When I got diagnosed the doctors told me the part that was affected was my cerebellum, it’s a part in your head behind the brain that controls the coordination and regulate muscle activity. I hated going to school because of the noise and the there’s too many people. Thank you for answering my question.

As a blind person, I totally agree with you on all these. I think one of the most annoying things is that people assume that I have an intellectual disability as well. When I mention I can't see, they immediately start talking to me like I'm 2. I use that comparison because I have a cousin who is autistic and that's how his parents and teachers talk to him. Really gentle, extremely encouraging over the little things, stuff like that.

One of my eyes was legally blind for most of my childhood, and it’s still a pretty sucky eye. People would ask, (and still do) “what do you see?” Or “is it just black in some places?” And I’m like, I can’t explain what nothing looks like. Like, what if you had no eyes? You don’t see black or white, you literally just don’t see. It’s like a little bit of nothingness has been mixed in with normal vision. That the only way I can explain it.

@@gabriella15748 Just think of like what do you see behind your head at all times? You don't see your field of vision and then blackness all around it, you have your field of vision and then just nothing around it. I did a research essay on this and studies have found that it depends on the type of blindness (i.e. spectrum), when they became blind (if they were born blind or if they progressively/suddenly came blind), how they became blind and stuff like that. It depends on each blind person, there isn't a specific answer to 'how do blind people dream?'. If I remember correctly, our dreams are based on our reality so if you were born blind you won't 'see' in your dreams like a sighted person, but if you lost your vision throughout your life, what you experienced prior to losing it can be part of your dreams.

hmm well I'm 5'2" and thin and nearly 37 and I still get mistaken sometimes for a 12 year old or someone in high school although lately people have been guessing I'm in my 20s. They tell me I'm supposed to be fatter with a bigger bust and wrinkles and grey hairs to be my age...and I'm just like uh some people are just size 0 with a small bust and non-wrinkly skin. Every once a year or so I get one grey hair. Then they're like "Oh I bet you pull it out." I say "no I just leave it there until it falls out on its own, I don't care..." then they're like "aging is bad. being tiny is bad." and I'm like "I find it to have lots of advantages like being able to fit in a tiny airplane bathroom, spelunking, tree climbing, being very aerodynamic when dancing, not having a big body or bust to get in the way when I'm backpacking, being able to sleep on my front if I feel like it...and being the same height as all the locals in Madagascar so they are more likely to accept me as one of them and I can more quickly integrate into their culture to save the environment with them..." so yeah this annoys them to see a woman that is okay with her body. If I'm not okay that's when they feel they can bully me to try to gain power over me or something. So they want us to be not okay. but to maintain our self esteem we should just not hand our power over to them and say we are okay with our small bodies. I like saying "Good things come in small packages." But this isn't the best response because then they start thinking about sex and I have to shut them up because they are being crass.

My Drs still want every detail, and since many argue about how reliable an SD is- I have to get the exact readings from the little machine... He usually alerts to get my attention, I go down the list of command words I've trained him with... And he paws me again once I reach the command he's alerting for. Then me and whoever is driving go for food and while waiting I test my blood.... I walk slow due to a shattered back, literally. So by the time I get somewhere hidden, I'm not going to be able to make it back before it gets hard(er) to walk. And I just don't like dragging out my medical supplies in a bathroom! Just no. Luckily the food places in my town know us well and always has a place that hides us from view(mostly) but gives my SD enough space... It just ticks me off when someone goes out of their way to stare at what I'm doing and then flips saying I need to do it in the restroom... I try not to mouth too badly about how would they like of their Drs drew their blood over a toilet.. But some days.. Uhg. I've had the same sort of things happen when I use my inhaler or someone thinks I'm going to use my EpiPen... (Haven't had to yet thankfully) Like just walk away bro, close ur eyes or something.

Since you asked: yes, eyes are important when eating. My grandma has recently become blind and she constantly drops things off of her fork, or misses bits of her food. I think sighted people use their eyes to 'pick out' what to put on their fork and determine if it's the right size to stay on it. She does good with finger foods though.
@symonehadorn51886 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you on the fact that we use our eyes to pick out food because it’s totally true. We determine if it’s the right size to stay on a fork/spoon or how to put something in your mouth. Colors also have a REALLY big part in what we eat.
@yoursimenthusiast87216 жыл бұрын
So missing bites cuz they fall of is a fact of life for both blind and sited, and since I got to experience what it was like to be in complete darkness under blindfold while doing normal things like eating your movements slow because your brain is unfamiliar with the loss of something that you were once so dependent on and because your movements slow to make sure you don’t like, hit something, your not able to have the force to poke something or scoop something because your brain thinks you’ll get hurt moving too fast because you can’t see your surroundings and because of that food falls off. As for knowing what’s on your plate, once you’ve done it enough times you’ll start to realize your utensils can be used like your Kane except it’s meant to feel the textures of the food that’s there and you’ll start to associate the textures with what the food might be, you’ll never be exactly right every time but that’s how you would eat something that’s not finger food
@yoursimenthusiast87216 жыл бұрын
Using your fork as a makeshift cane to find food on your plate can also be used to hover around the pice you intend to get to feel if it’s the right size that’s just a fact of how blind people eat

I have trouble hearing on one ear and can't always understand what people are saying even if the volume is fine. What helps me is talking at a reasonable pace and not mumbling. Else rephrasing helps a lot if I didn't understand it the first three times.

I’m going to refrain my sick sense of humour from commenting on this one because I don’t want to offend anybody. Take care all and stay safe online. Will need to remember to only say online what we would say to someone’s face (strawberry - this is not a dig at you, very far from it darling) I went to make a comment that I thought it would’ve been funny but then thought someone might take it the wrong way. So thought it was a good opportunity to remind people that although we are behind a screen and often a fake name like my own, we are all humans.... take care and by the way I get eczema as well as being blind and well legally blind) and is a wheelchair most the time. So I don’t really fit into one category if anyone wanted to put me on the box but I fit into many.. If you know what I mean. Because I’m not totally anything. Instead I’m totally human and a total little loving person who happens to have a few kinda major disabilities and chronic illnesses. You have a great day:)!

OMG, some of those are sooo stupid! Specially the period one, eating one and wiping :D I have PCOS and always struggled with bad acne all over my body because of that and the most common question is: "And have you tried to wash yourself?" ... No, never. In fact I don't even wipe myself on the toilet and that is why I smell like honey, because I'm surely not using shower gel that smells like that. -.- Really? I think that for people with acne is properly washing themselves the first thing they do to try to get rid of it. Also, on a job interview they asked me if I look like that (acne and scars) all the time as if I could choose days when it's better and those when it's worse. Like, yes, when I go to work, I'm gonna look normal and I will have acne only on weekends, don't worry.
@danielleyouie80286 жыл бұрын
omg i feel you. ive struggled with acne a lot on my face and it makes me so self-conscious. I don't get rude comments that much because its so natural for some people to have acne, people don't usually care. But that's dumb, like you really think someone with acne is not gonna be hygienic and try and stay clean. No one wants acne but its not something that you can just wash away like greasy hair.
@tazhienunurbusinezz17036 жыл бұрын
@@danielleyouie8028 My daughter had severe acne for 4 years. She was getting made fun of by a few girls because of it. We went through 5 dermatologists (Your derm should care more about solving the problem rather than selling you expensive stuff out of their case of "goodies" in the front office. The derm we ended up with didn't mention that case at all & was more than happy with her using her Doxy, the 2 different soaps she recommended from Target, one medicated/one gentle, her Sephora exfoliating mitt & her Belif Aqua Bomb Moisturizer that she loves). Now she's had clear skin for 5 months & after a year of having no acne she will start her laser treatments for the scarring, probably 1 during spring break & 1 or 2 treatments next summer depending on the downtime she's looking at. My husband had severe acne in high school as well but men's facial skin is different so his scarring wasn't much of an issue for him after age 22. He also didn't ever pick at his when it was bad so the scarring was minimal all things considered. Finding a competant dermatologist is key. She just turned 15 a couple weeks ago & is going to be a Sophomore so she will be good for her last 3 years of high school. I hope you guys find what works for you. I understand just how hard it can be & just how damaging it can be emotionally because of nasty people. Good luck & have a great day!

You feel it, 100%, haven’t you ever had that moment where you’re out with friends at a cafe or at school and the second you stood up, you felt it? And you knew you had to get to a bathroom ASAP. You just can tell by the feeling of it. I won’t go into too much details because it’s TMI but people like to be dry. And you can tell when you’re not dry all throughout your period and that tells you what’s going on. For me, my biggest thing when I first went blind was worrying if I had any spots on my pants. Because even though I could feel my period, I was always so anxious that I didn’t get to a bathroom in time. Most women can see whether they’ve had an issue or not but I couldn’t, because after awhile, it dries. I had to ask my mom a lot to make sure it wasn’t on my pants. Thankfully she never saw anything so I guess I did a pretty good job ;) haha it’s funny because I spent so long agonizing over my period, because my periods are so heavy due to endometriosis. And really I shouldn’t have worried at all because it really is easy to tell what’s going on without seeing it. Hope this helps! Sorry if I did get too TMI in the end lol

First of all, oh, my gods, I'm totally using the term "sighties" now. That is amazing. Secondly, I've been visually impaired since birth and I've gotten questions like, "How much can you see?" or, "Do you wish you could see?" or, "Would you like me to pray for you?" (I hate that one so much! Sure, pray for me if you want, but because I'm a person, not because you pity me or see me as a golden ticket to Heaven) And some of my favorites are when they're asked about me, but aren't directed at me. Like, if I'm at a restaurant with people and the waiter talks to someone at the table instead of me: "What would she like to drink/eat?", "How would she like that cooked?", "Would she care for some dessert?" I always want to be bratty and answer in the third person, but I just politely correct them instead.

So this might be a weird question but regarding sighties and food, what are your feelings of the saying “your eyes are bigger then your stomach”? I’m constantly wanting to eat more then I can because I see it and while my eyes are telling me that looks good and I want to eat it my stomach says no. Have you ever had that problem where you are full and then you smell popcorn or bbq and suddenly you are hungry again? I feel as a sighted person I eat more because I can see it rather then because I’m hungry, like I have to finish my plate of food even if I’m full. Thoughts?

I’m visually impaired, which means I don’t normally have as much vision loss as Molly. 1. It’s a common idiom. It’s not something we’d get offended over. 2. While visually appreciating food is awesome, the lack of seeing food isn’t going to make us eat less or not overindulge.

Or when he wears his in training Patch they will say "So your going to give him away?".. It's like people think a disabled person has to look or act a certain way. Sometimes invisible disabilities can be hard because people often don't understand or think I don't need my dog. Disabilities come in all shapes, sizes, diagnoses, symptoms, boy, girl, every race, etc. They don't discriminate to "This must be what you look or act like" I think thats the hardest about able bodies is when they don't have disabilities or personally known anyone with them, they don't understand. No fault in there own if they don't have the experience of knowing someone, but it can be frustrating at times!

Omg yes!!! Every single day I get asked “are you training him??” And I am like... no. He’s mine. I’m blind. It makes me wonder what people think a blind / visually impaired person is supposed to look like. Like. I don’t get it. It is baffling. And then people like to let their pets walk up to my dog. Just wander into him. And then they say “I thought you were training him.” My favorite question I get occasionally from kids “what’s wrong with your eyes?” Also my guide is currently rolling around in front of me. Vader says hi to Gallop!
@TheAshypoo6 жыл бұрын
I'd respond "Yeah. I'm trying to train him. He has a bad habit I want to put an end to. I'm trying to train him NOT to pee on random people." Then, if he goes up to them, say "Uh oh. I think he's going to pee on you! o.O" and see how they react.

Haha....My husband and I are both red heads, when we go out people always ask if we are brother and sister....WTF!!! Would you assume that of other people with the same hair color or skin color as their mate. I have also had a lady stop me while on a walk with my red headed children. She was very excited to question us on whether we knew that red heads would be extinct in 200 years. My children looked horrified. I calmly smiled and told her we'd all be extinct in 200 years as I guided my children away from her.....lol...some people's children...

Dumb lady. Recessive genes don’t just disappear, they are carried and reappear. I have a full on ginger red haired cousin on my Honduran mother’s side of the family while almost everyone else is dark skinned and haired. My dad is blond and while all us kids are brunettes, most of my nieces and nephews are blonde and blue eyed despite having half Latino parents with dark hair. When I am out with my bro and niece, we often get dirty looks cuz people think she is not related to us but she looks just like my bro when he was little but with blonder hair (his hair got darker as he got older)

One comment I get when I'm out with my guide dog: "It's a blind dog...". I think, and sometimes can't stop from saying, "God, I hope not!". :-) Another thing that has happened to me so many times, is when I've been out with my husband, who does happen to be blind, "Is that your brother?". People just refuse to imagine that I'm married, or in a relationship! I know that most people mean nothing bad at all, but it is a testament to the continuous cycle of weird education about blind people, or anyone 'different' for that matter. :-)

Brilliant response to a stupid question haha! Relationship wise I get the opposite - I go out somewhere with my brother and people think he's my partner! Nope he's just a good brother taking care of his sister 😂 and the unusual thing is we share so many friends, so it doesn't make sense to go out separately. Plus we have very similar taste in music so most concerts we go to, we go together as well. The only time we've really come across siblings who get the exact same thing was at a friend's wedding, so even though we didn't know many other guests we instantly connected with these other siblings and had plenty to talk about!

so im adopted and people always ask, "why dont you look like your parents?" thats an obvious question and i understand why they would ask that. But then when i explain my adoption, they always ask the weirdest questions. For example when i said that i way adopted when i was a few months old (btw im from asia but live in America) they INSTANTLY ask, so can u speak chineese? And can you say a sentence for me?" And i just dont understand why they would ask that, i mean i was adopted when i wasnt even 1and they instanty think that i know the whole asian language. Although im not blind, i sort of relate to how some people just ask the weirdest questions. *I know that people just want to know about my adoption, but seriously, its not like im different from everyone, i just wasn't born by my parents :/

Michael Triola I know that’s right. Personally, I prefer to date disabled though. Able bodied people have a hard time getting over their annoying phase of getting to know me. FueledByKass The older I get, the more I kind of don’t mind this question. (Other than my general disdain for questions, and possibly feeling objectified). If I’m tired enough, I’ll fall asleep in my wheelchair, on the toilet, or possibly somewhere else, just fine. 🤣 Ideally, I get into my bed before I fall asleep. Many wheelchair users who can use their upper body can transfer onto a bed. If they can’t, there are a variety of ways to make this happen.

Mia #9 oh my God I can’t stand when I get asked that question. It’s like, that’s the go to question that everyone wants to ask. It’s so annoying. It’s like, I tell people I’m visually impaired. Or legally blind, if you want to refer to it that way. Meaning I can still see shapes, colors, and stuff like that, but only up until a certain point, and then it’ll blur. But anyway, everyone always asks me that question, and I’m just like, I don’t know. Sometimes I just start randomly guessing, and sometimes I will actually get it right. But after certain point, I’m just like, please don’t ask me that question anymore. It gets really annoying. but… One day I should be evil, and do what you said. LOL. If it’s someone who is being a. dick that is.

Thank you, Molly, for making videos like this to 'get things out in the open' because there's always people who don't understand and will ask those awkward questions. I'm sighted but have other non - visible disabilities and sometimes people can be difficult when they find out my disabilities; at times they're rude and abusive. For example, I sometimes need a cane to walk, and on bad days people see me walking with my cane and they can see that there's something wrong with me. HOWEVER, if they see me on a 'good' day walking without it, I hear comments from them saying that I'm cheating the system and stuff like: 'See? He can walk without his cane - he MUST be scamming the system, I should get some video of him walking without his cane and report him to the authorities! The point is that I and a friend of mine as well unfortunately get this sort of thing from normal, non - disabled people who don't understand that we have our 'good' and 'bad' days. It's just uncomfortable, and I'm sorry to hear that you have to answer those same questions over and over.

My friend who is blind was asked by a friend how he tells money apart? He told her he smells it as a joke and she actually sniffed it! She realized it was a joke like after a second but him and I laugh about it still to this day! It is amazing what sighted people will believe when u tell them. I recall seeing a documentary (sadly don't know what it was) but there was this blind gentleman and he had someone help him fold all his money differently depending on the bill. I don't know if that is a common practice but I thought it was genius!
@zararoyce3196 жыл бұрын
super geeky yes, that’s basically how it works there is also an app that you can waive the bill in front of and it will tell you what it is but, for me personally I just try to avoid using cash as much as possible and just always pay for everything with a card because that is safest and even if there is some type of an issue then I could just contact the bank or the card company and explain and then they would take care of it whereas if you got cheated out of money in cash there isn’t much that can be done it would just be screwed

I don't know if you read comments from your older videos (even if it's less than a month old by this point in time) but here is a comment either way. Warning you now, this is going to be a long one. So if you choose to read this, grab some popcorn and a cup of tea, or whatever else you want to snack on, and get comfy :) I will admit, I came here from Mr. Kate's video of your room transformation (which is absolutely beautiful and looks like it would be so much fun to be in! I'm totally envious!), and before I watch your collab with Mr. Kate I wanted to see what your channel was all about. This video happen to be the first one I clicked on to watch. Now, for some context, I have mental illness. Not just the usual Anxiety and Depression mixture, which are already debilitating enough as it is, but also Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, in which I get flashbacks of my past traumas at random times for no reason whatsoever (and let me tell you, having a flashback while at work is NEVER a fun thing to have to explain why you're screaming and crying, completely terrified that you're reliving your worst trauma possible, all when no one is near you) among other things. I have gone though intense counselling, many many many types of medications, all of which have different side effects in and of itself (and sometimes even more debilitating side effects than the actual mental illness). I often get comments in real life about how mental illness is all in my head, I'm doing this for attention, I need to get over it, I'm faking it, I'm a baby, that the real world is hard and I need to push through it, etc etc etc. When you were saying that people often say your faking your blindness, it really made me think. I always thought of myself as someone sensitive to other people's feeling, someone who tried to be considerate and respectful of everyone, but I never thought about all the stigmatization people have for all types of interference. (Yes, I said interference, because it's only a disability if you let it disable your life. And you are NOT one to let your blindness be a disability, I can tell that just in this one video, and that is why I am subscribing to you. You have an interference to sight, but not a disability, because you can obviously see in ways other people can't.) Your video make me think. It's making me realize that no matter how much I am one of those people who still need to change my perspective on things. I thought I had a good grasp on how to be kind and thoughtful to others, when really, there's a whole other side to kindness and consideration I never even considered. Thank you for that. I have always wanted to better myself in general, and I know I have a whole list of ways to do so, but now I want to really look at stereotypes. I want to really take a look at how many stereotypes I've often told myself, and figure out ways to change my own way of thinking, so I can get rid of them for myself, because often times, those are what hurt the most when people look at me after they find out about my mental illness. All this, just to say thank you. Thank you for making me realize mental health isn't the only interference with severe stereotypes, all because people can't see the cast from a broken bone, or the Kleenex and red nose when someone is sick. Thank you.
