I remember being about 12 when I went to my grandma’s house who was blind. I remember my dad announcing to her that I was there and she looked at me and said “you’ve grown up so much, look how tall you’ve gotten!” I was so confused because I thought blind meant seeing absolutely nothing, but she could see my outline because I was in front of a bright window. She could also see some light from a TV or other light source. I was so amazed that being blind didn’t always mean complete darkness.

@@vic_cresss Well technically yes, though personally I prefer to use the term "blind" only for those who either have so strong prescription that they pretty can't function without glasses or those who couldn't get glasses strong enough to fix their vision. (just FYI:My prescription is really weak so I can function perfectly normally without my glasses for the most part, only things like driving is where I absolutely have to wear them as my long distance vision is too bad to do it safely without my glasses). That said even with medical definition of "blindness" there's degrees, with only the most severe cases being a total lack of vision.

If i don't have my glasses on and someone is more than four feet away then their eyes look like dark holes and I can't really see their face in detail. It's wonderful! Just kidding I hate it. But I'm grateful for not actually being blind. It could be worse.

On eyes: Not everyone is even blind because of their eyes. Some people's eyes work fine but there's a neurological reason why they can't see.

Like me, my eyes are fine, my optic nerves are dead, which is why I can't see. It's been that way since I was three years old, and I get a lot of the same nonsense Molly does as well. You'd actually be surprised sometimes the questions we get when we're out and about, especially if we're by ourselves. These days I'm rarely out on my own, but when I was younger, I was almost always out alone, and folks would throw fits trying to explain to me why I shouldn't be. Honestly, I find it rather amusing.

I love that scene on grey's anatomy where they can toss things at a blind patient without warning and he'll catch them reflexively, because technically he can see, but his brain is convinced he can't, so he IS blind in the general sense, but he still reacts to things within his range of "sight." I’m a music therapist and I offer adaptive lessons so I’ve taught piano to blind students. My favorite thing is listening to the audience in the performance debate over whether my student is blind or not. You simply do not need sight to play piano and I love opening peoples minds to that reality.

Nah... It'll take a blind person just as long to learn those jumps. That's muscle memory. I taught my student to practice sliding her fingers along the black keys as she jumped to the next chord/note so she could feel where she was. Then as she developed the muscle memory through practice(just as a sighted person would do) she could make the jumps.

Why would being sighted not allow someone to play an instrument? lol. I'm in my schools orchestra and we do blind folded challenges, biggest part about learning an instrument is muscle memory along with ear training. Though, do you find your blind students have a harder time learning more complex songs since they have to memorize them? I find I rely on sheet music a lot (I have bad memory. )

Well there is Braille music. But I didn't use it with my student because she happened to have perfect pitch. And it's not hard at all. When you are being classically trained, You have to memorize all your music anyway before you can perform it. She just listened to a recording when she forget something rather than checking the sheet music. If you are blind you dont use visual memory anyway, so memorizing by ear isn't as challenging as it would be for a sighted person.

How do I say this... completely blind people I’ve talked to “look” everywhere with their eyes, as many don’t really use eye cues in non-verbal communication. However, I’ve seen people who became completely blind later in life still “track” things with their eyes even though they can’t visually see me. I know this isn’t applicable to you as you have light perception, but I think it’s really neat how our nervous system remembers to do such things, even though they no longer serve us any purpose.

It actually is applicable to Molly because she doesn’t ALWAYS see from light perception. She has stated before that sometimes it needs to be super bright in order to see shadows. I definitely think it is from muscle memory since she went a long time with having some vision.

I came here because I was on Tommy's Channel before and saw your collaboration video. I get that people think you're not blind. Compared to him you seem much more aware of your invirement. You look around, you look at his face, in to the camera, you understand colors, you ware makeup, etc. But people forget... Being born blind shapes you very differently then someone who lost sight. I think this is the difference between being born blind vs. becoming blind. In Molly's case she was 14 when she lost her sight so she has a very clear understanding of what seeing is like. Tommy on the flip side was born blind. He has no notion of sight or the nuances sight brings to our gestures or communications, etc. He could, say, look at Molly when she's talking, but why? To make you feel more comfortable? LOL

There was a streamer faking that he was stuck in a wheelchair (not a part time wheelchair user but completely paralyzed so people had pity on him and gave him more money). Then one day he stood up by accident. So yeah, money and attention, what I assume this girl doesn't get as much anyway so yeah. I think people are just too close minded, they're not informed enough about blindness awareness I guess. So don't judge that if you can't understand and make research or ask??? I can't get people.

It’s important to not be narrow-minded. I was once sitting alone in an outer office waiting room and a woman walked in the room, made perfect eye contact with me and started signing. I began to reply to her in sign language (I was there to volunteer my services to a home for those who were deaf and/or blind), but she just kept signing. She wasn’t vocalizing. Then, somebody came out of one of the inner offices, looked at me and said, “She’s blind” and began fingerspelling into the woman’s hand. I sat there amazed that she knew exactly where I was and seemed to be looking right at me. I learned from that experience that it is important to understand that there are various degrees of hearing loss, as well as various degrees of the loss of sight - so “blind” doesn’t mean you can’t see anything at all, just like “deaf” doesn’t mean that there aren’t certain frequencies that one can hear. I am utterly amazed that somebody would argue with someone who IS blind and try to explain to them why they’re NOT blind…!?! (WTH?) How about we all just admit that there are some things that we need to learn and zip it, hmm? As the Bible says, “Even a fool is considered wise when he is silent.” Proverbs 17:28 Why open the mouth and remove all doubt?

There was a guy a grade above me (he has now graduated this year) named Cody who was born with detached retinas. He had the full smokey white eyes that are stereotypical with blind people but he never wore dark sunglasses. He even was able to walk around the large high school campus on his own with no help. He would often times ask people to accompany him to places saying he needed help but everyone knew he didn't. They went with him anyway because he was just the kind of person that you can't help but like and you would be hard pressed to find someone who didn't like him. He was very upbeat about his lack of sight and never passed up the opportunity to laugh and joke about it. He liked to freak people out with how good his hearing and memory was but calling out to people by name down the halls that were talking to their friends. It was pretty funny. He knew about half the school by just their voice. That's about 500 kids right there. He was on the percussion line for band and was damn good at the drums. He was decent at the xylophone too. Never underestimate a blind person.

I feel like some people are so used to seeing the way blind people are usually portrayed in movies - staring straight ahead, blank eyes or closed eyes, always making a big show of touching things - that when they see a blind person who doesn't look like that, they assume this person can't possibly really be blind. I remember there was an actress on a TV show here in the UK, playing a blind character. Apparently, she got loads of comments about how she was terrible at 'acting blind.' Of course, the actress actually *was* blind.

I understand about using words like "watch", etc. My former next-door neighbor has alopecia (she is bald). I once called her and asked if she like for me to get the kids out of her hair for a while. I never thought of her as bald. We laughed it off. She understands that there are phrases that don't sound right any other way. I'm mostly deaf and I still say "I hear/I heard" when I feel something, like the vibration from a passing truck or a train or a helicopter. I don't process it the same way that I did when I was a hearing person, but my vocabulary didn't change. Oh, and my ears still look the same too, even though they don't hear now. lol Love your videos. :)

Some people fake all kinds of things, so if someone saw a video and WONDERED IF Molly was faking, I think that's sort of reasonable. But you better be damn sure of what you're saying before you start levelling accusations. It always amazes me how people will latch onto some little apparent inconsistency and think that their powers of perception are far superior to the rest of the world. Then no amount of explanation will change their mind. there were a few things I wondered about with Molly, like how she was able to apply perfect makeup, but instead of going into the comments and ranting about how she's OBVIOUSLY not really blind, I figured that she has developed ways of dealing with the problem. Obviously not having been in that situation, I wouldn't have any idea about that.

Some people... My wife was born with bilateral anophthalmia, no optic nerves and wears artificial eyes. She has been trained to look at people she's talking to, but it does take an effort. Some people think she can see, which can lead to weird conversations. She's not that into sunglasses unless she can't wear her eyes for some reason (like a stye). She watches a lot of movies and television, some of it sans audio description (though it's kind of become second nature for me to describe stuff). And now I'm rambling. Sorry about that! ;-)

People seem to think being blind entails being unable to function in any given situation. Yes if you blindfold someone who can see they're gonna struggle but that's because they can see on a DAY TO DAY BASIS, they're not used to not seeing, but the funny thing about people who are born blind or have been for a long time is that they're used to it and use their other senses and and the technology around them to do normal things

It is really bizarre how ANGRY some people get at disabled people (particularly ones that don't fit into a very tiny box or stereotype they have in their mind.) I've definitely experienced that. How we look and present ourselves and manage our own lives has absolutely nothing to do with them, yet their ignorance has such a stubbornly angry and accusatory tone. I wish everyone was aware by now that disabled people come in all sorts of forms and appearances, both naturally and how we choose to express ourselves. It's ridiculous how many people (and doctors) in this day and age with the internet, with so much collective knowledge and experiences at our fingertips, still don't realize the validity and vastness of how we come in all ages and forms! So many people still only think disabled means you need a wheelchair 24/7, when there is so much more than that! I was born with no vision in my right eye and only partial vision in my left. When i was 12 I had a prosthetic put in my right eye to make it look more normal than it did because it stayed closed. So when people say "oh your not blind" I get the pleasure of pulling my eye out and proving them wrong lol. I can't lie the shock on their faces makes me laugh. But I am also high functioning; I am working on a Master's in Professional Counseling, I have modeled and I work a regular hourly job, so I also get people doubting me when I tell them.

I worked in Web Accessibility for 12 years and my blind colleague was one of the fastest typists I've ever worked with. I'm guessing 90 words per minute if not more. He both typed AND coded and was blind from age one. So not everyone is using voice dictation, some are actually TYPING because they learned how and they use a screenreader as assistive technology to read back or voice what they've typed. I'm so glad you have this channel Molly, such a great way to educate people and create understanding. Cause people assume the strangest things! cycatwoman I’m not blind I’m visually impaired aka legally blind. I can still see. But to answer your question I use my accessibility feature on my phone to help me when the text is too small or I’ll just screenshot it and zoom in that way to read it. Something people need to understand is that people who are visually impaired or blind can do just as much as the sighted but we do it in a different way. You guys write, we Braille. You guys count money with your eyes, we use money identifiers. Technology is so advanced today that there is all types of equipment that help us to do just about anything.

Im blind and use a speech to text app. And if my app doesn't work and sticks occasionally ? I have a friend who will comment for me. I'm listening intently here, I read braille and can't write anything down anymore sadly. I've only been blind since October last year, I still create hundreds of songs though , just takes alot longer than it used to do... Much love to you and ignore those who think you can see, Light to me is also glary! And extremely painful, it's overpowering ! Born blind is not the same as being blind later in life as we are left with little reminders of sight, seriously blurry areas of colour if light is present.. But absolutely no night vision, although street lights can give us glary splodges ,appearing like clusters..;-) Good luck in all you do ;-)

The whole thing about typing if I’m blind, I’ve gotten this so much! And explaing it to everyone is so exhausting and so damn frustrating. It gets to the point where I want to answer by lashing out at them and being brutally blunt with them! But then, I’d most likely get some replies from people saying that I was a psychotic bully and they would remember to never ask me anything again. I'm 56 years old and legally blind due to a delayed surgery from a whole retina detachment. I found out then, that I have myopia degenerative condition, severe retina thinning and lattice degeneration! I have double vision and problematic hallucination where something looks like it's in front of me but is not. I also suffer with light sensitivity. I'm also partially deaf in both ears. My eyelids apparently are almost closed as I obviously don't use them weakening the muscles. I had to laugh yesterday. For the first time my son got annoyed with me. He said "I'm sick of living in a home where it's always dark and no lights are on"!! So I told him well then why don't you flick the light switch on!! Any kind of light bothers my eyes as well as drying them out. my eyes are really sensitive to light including indoor lighting. I'm glad you did this Vlog, because I've had a crazy woman come up to me and screamed "Take your sun glasses off, YOUR NOT BLIND" i've had people grab my cane /stick or my backpack/ food cart without permission and list goes on and on. What I'm trying to say to the viewers/trolls of your channel is that your ignorant is no excuse and you need to step away, stop and think how ridiculous you sound. Whether we are blind, legally blind or low vision, we have a lot to deal with as it is. Everybody has different situations and I can't possibly believe that you would fake blindness. First of all you can't it's impossible because your eye surgeon who knows you and specializes in retina diseases or myopia degenerative disease etc. would definitely know whether you're faking it or not! Also, you are not able to receive a referral to the CNIB unless an eye specialist refers you to them. I am a member of the CNIB that sends coaches to help me adjust and deal with the problems associated with my condition. So I'd like to thank you Molly very much for sharing and educating the public! I see a retina specialist/surgeon at St Michaels. TMmI haven’t met anyone that has similar problems that I have. I see shapes and lines , but with blurred, double vision and extreme depth perception loss it’s difficult at times to where it is or what it is. I also have what is known as hallucinations. This is Where you would might be walking and a pole/tree would jump in front of you but it’s not really true. The tree and pole are usually on my far right, but I still jump backwards. My children, when walking with me, were great and calm me down at the beginning of this new symptom. It was quite scary at first, but the CNIB taught me how to avoid situations like that, by using my walking cane to feel for obstacles❣️🇨🇦

1. I "watched" this video, as I often do, relaxing on the couch with my eyes closed. 2. As for what blind people are capable of, there are a lot less limits than many people think. I have a blind Facebook friend who I met in the mid-1970s at a radio station where I had previously worked. He worked midnight to 6AM, alone in the studio as I had done a couple years earlier. The only changes made to accommodate him were that they installed a Braille teletype printer so he could do newscasts, and they installed an audio oscillator which allowed him to read the meters on the transmission equipment. (This was the 1970s, before much computer equipment was used at radio stations.) Anyway, he was and still is a great guy.

I’ve had people tell me I was lying when I mentioned my mom had cancer in some posts. Like.... who would lie about that? For what, sympathy? LIKES?? And to just assume someone would lie about something like that says a lot about the person making those accusations. When we found out, I’d recently moved, and I didn’t have a lot of people to talk to about it, to process and get used to the idea (it was a total shock), so I was kind of trying to... own what was happening and get accustomed to it, because I still couldn’t say it out loud, and I was trying to work on it. I lived for 3 years in an apartment next to a blind 60 years old lady and her guide dog. Sometimes during summer she asked me to watch over her (young and active) dog. I was too curious and after a while I asked her why she went outside without her dog. She said that she was taking sailing lessons! After she learnt, she started taking her dog with her and she drove the boat on her own, using the wind to keep the right direction. She also showed me photos of her and her dog when she went cross country skiing! It's amazing what blind people can do if they don't let their condition discourage them!

Plus you lost sight when you were 14 so that also makes your language (uses of the word "seen", "watched" etc) more "cemented" if you will, because it used to be literal for you when you were sighted! I'm a sighted person and I've never considered the expression "I'm watching this video/movie/etc" to mean specifically and ONLY visually looking at something. So much more goes into _watching_ a video, if you're looking at it yes, but you're also listening, thinking, analyzing, engaging. A LOT is going on up in our heads when we are _watching_ a video, case in point you could be idly doing something in front of the tv, you can hear the tv, and you could be occasionally looking up at the movie on the tv, hell you can be staring at the screen but be spaced out, and if you aren't engaged, if you're not _watching_ the movie, you probably wont know what's going on or get confused with the plot because you missed something. So much more goes into watching media than just using your vision and to think blind people can't benefit or wouldn't enjoy _watching_ movies or videos is pretty close minded.

Love your videos. I agree with your definition of "seeing" a video. I'm in a wheelchair and often say " I need to go sit down" or lets walk to the store...not going to "roll to the store". Lol

Am I really that one weird person that started saying roll when I had to be in a wheelchair!? I was in highschool and very light on the subject of my wreck.... I even wound up with the nickname wheels cuz I really did love being in my wheelchair, it was speedy and didn't cause pain when used So I was thankful to have it and loved it. And also, wheels was shorter than what the band called me "drill sergeant" roflad. I'd get mad the freshmen weren't doing their part and keeping us from getting home after the game... And took things into my own hands but had to use a deep voice so that when I yelled it didn't turn into a squeak... That's what they get for laughing the first time I did roll call. I could walk a bit, and after the 2nd surgery was walking more and more.... It was just very slow. I was the overachiever, always moving and nearly running everywhere I went... So the chair was enjoyable thruout the time I needed it. Now I have an SD to help me balance so I don't fall constantly, still walk rather slow but it's better for me to be walking. I'm just weird.

@@wildlifesymphony you're not weird, eventhough I don't need to use wheelchair sometimes I think it's quite convenience because it just like a mini car that allows you to walk faster than normal people. I think if I ever try to use it due to curiosity I might be addicted to it.😅😅

It's even better when the teachers didn't have the heart to tell me to slow down xD They did threaten to out up speed signs and clock how fast I went and limit it that way... But hey, I police myself better than the teachers ever did hehe I enjoy using my chair on long trips, like to the zoo. Especially since I taught my SD how to help me roll in the chair easier XD

People say oh I bet this and this is terrible, my grandpa got in a major wreck and alot of things happened to him and we went to a parade and saw a woman that was paralyzed but she was very cheerful and happy clearly and my papaw said wow, I'm glad I'm like this and nothing worse but now he's way better and can walk now.

People saying "you can't type your blind" makes no sense to me. When i was in elementary school we had a typing unit we had to do because they were converting everything to computers. They told us the reason the J and F keys have the little bumps on them is so blind people know where the keys are so they can memorize where the letters were, like if you have sight and you type you don't have to slowly type and look for each letter if you type enough you develop muscle memory of where the letters are. Why can't people just think about the every day use of things.

It also why we have two sets of number keys, the number pad on the right had a bump on the 5 for people without vision to easily remember numbers on the keyboard...

My question, to everyone that doubt her blindness, WHY would a person do that??!! Like, being blind in our ableist community has got to be a massive hassle (please correct me if I'm wrong), in the sense that people judge and assume things, like the sunglasses and the cloudy eyes. Why would anyone fake a disability of any kind, when so few places and communities are built and adapted to the needs of people with disabilities? Especially when they have to deal with people questioning them. Why bother? So, to people claiming other people are faking disabilities of any kind: Why on earth does it bother you that people on the internet have disabilities? Why can't you just learn from what they tell you? Why can't you just be grateful that you don't have to deal with people like yourself and can benefit from the ableist world we live in? (Once again, if I've gotten anything wrong, please educate me)

I agree, no one on this world should be able to fake a disability like hers, because you can tell if someone is blind, because if most people are blind, you can tell by their eye color some of the some of the eye color will mostly be grey but someone could have a black eye color if there blind I'm blind to and it sucks only if light shines on the object I can see it but I use the Alexa thing I use it on everything I also have a person who helps me but I mostly have a dog that's named Basil I call her sweety bell or Hazel

Sadie .101____123 what I understand is she can perceive light but can't see anything else. Her disease is kinda like looking through a tunnel that slowly gets smaller with time. So it's not blurry. Shes reached a point where the tunnel is too small to see.

I have one legally blind eye. If both eyes were as useless as my right eye, I’d be stumbling around like someone had rubbed vasoline on my glasses. Also: touch typing. Are people too lazy to at least try to touch type nowadays? My mom could type 70 words a minute while watching a soap at the same time.

I get it too. I’ve been legally blind since birth, and the most annoying thing is when people constantly ask me “why don’t you just get better glasses?” Or “why don’t you just get Lasic”. Oh, wow, after having dealt with this my whole life and having been to dozens of different eye specialists, it took you, random person in Walmart, to point out what should be an obvious cure-all to anyone with a visual impairment!

My husband is blind on one eye. When people say “But your eye doesn’t look blind” he thinks it’s so stupid, because of similar reasons to what you stated. I forget he’s blind in that eye though.

There's a youtuber whose eyes are both sighted technically. her lifelong illness caused a lot of things included completely destroying the connection between one of the eyes and her brain. it took doctors awhile to figure out she wasn't faking not being able to see out of it. because the eye still responded/responds now the way it was supposed to to light tests

Well, typing is a tactile experience. I typed for about 12 years before my vision loss. I don’t need to see the keys. I have a screen reader called jaws and I use zoom text. I would suggest checking some of those videos out. Also, maybe check out what macular degeneration is. There are many eye diseases that can cause blindness, however that does not mean that I live in total darkness.

Now as an adult, I just try to educate people that certain behaviors are not necessary and really off-putting.

First time seeing one of her videos and I instantly believe her, because it looks like she has nystagmus (constant and rapid movement of the eyes). I have relatives with albinism, which also affects vision, and they have/had nystagmus and both are/were diagnosed legally blind. Doesn't mean a person with this is automatically blind, but their vision is undoubtably impaired.

Alot of blind peeps can use regular qwerty keyboards due to bumps telling them their finger positions. Same goes for keypads and many other devices. Remember how you never even look at the keyboard when typing?

You're not wrong. As someone with a disability myself, the impression people's confused gazes and insensitive questions gives me is that until speaking to someone living with disability, they assumed we were crushed, housebound, broken people, depressed and without joy. I think its because the nearest situation is being sick with flu or something, most can understand and empathise that. The thought of that feeling forever sounds terrible, in bed all the time, too sick to enjoy anything, the only perk is people oohing and aahing and bringing you grapes maybe. But disability and chronic illness (I have both) aren't the same. Maybe that's the confusion. Like, it reminds me of that look your mom gives when you're off school with something and you start getting a little too active and she's like 'if you're well enough for that then maybe you should be at school!' That's what it looks like to me...

I don’t see how people can be so rude against people that have something wrong with them. How would u feel if you were that person blind and you were hearing all of these rude comments about you. You wouldn’t like it so idk why these people are saying these things I mean I get offended when I see people bullying other people let alone something like this.
