Your tutorials are incredible! I will be honest and say that as an architecture student I've been a bit hesitant to rely on Photoshop as a main solution to visualization problems. However, you've helped me understand concepts in Photoshop that you CAN'T GET looking at one of the many "ArchViz Photoshop tutorial" where they put 100 effects and everything is done at 4x speed. Thank you for your hard work and you deserve all the best! :)

Hello, Unmesh! Have not watched the video yet, but the title alone reminded me that PC parts are limited these days and a lot of folk are learning Photoshop on slower machines from home. I would love a compiled guide on how to optimise Photoshop for older machines (especially for art-related stuff with many layers). You have done these in the past and I will get around to watching them, but just like the Curves adjustment layer, there's always something to tweak! And as always, thanks for the pro lessons!

There is one more way to reduce the PSD file which I've been using for a while now. Essentially, you just make all the layers invisible before saving the document. The only compromise is that you have to make them visible next time you open the file, however that takes only couple of seconds. This is extremely helpful if you're working on different projects daily, and you want to have a copy of all of them on your machine. For me it usually makes a difference of 5MB per file, so I save over 5GB of storage saved up on 1000+ PSDs that I have.

Hi Razes, thank you for all your videos. It is always inspiring to watch them. At this case I would spread your 10 tips to dozen - 11) delete your working channels, if there are any; 12) check bit depth of your file (bits per channel) - in most cases 8 is enough.

Great video! I would also like to recommend saving images as TIFF, not PSD. TIFF is able to store all of the Photoshop data such as layers, smart objects, etc. while also providing additional compression methods. With compression enabled, I typically find that TIFF files are sound half the size of PSD. Give it a try!

A year or two ago, I was blown away by a mock-up PSD that used actions to build a very large file from a very small one. Granted, it takes some serious know-how to custom build an action for that purpose, but it is another method I've seen to greatly reduce file size.

Two simple things I always do that also help are creating a top layer that is only white and turn it on before saving and reducing the canvas size (not image size!) to something small before saving. Weird, but works. I think it has something to do with the thumbnail preview... which I could care less about because I'm good with file naming conventions.

Two other tips I learned and helped me a lot: 1. when saving your PSD file group all layers and hide them, or add a solid color layer like black on top of all of the layers and save it. 2. Save your file in TIFF format and chose ZIP in image compression and ZIP in layer compression. this will affect the file size majorly.

Another tip is if you don't need to duplicate a layer (and can accomplish something with simply a new layer) create a new blank layer instead. I know in some tutorials by others they tell you to duplicate layers for some things (I do generally create a copy of the background layer in many cases as a base starting point to go back to in case I do something wrong but otherwise try to avoid duplicating layers if I don't need to, as this does add to file size, especially if you have a large file, say from a 40-50MP camera). As mentioned, the question is what you are willing to use to save space. What I usually do is when I think an image is "done" I usually make a few backups of the image (in its full state, with layers and all) and then start to compress it and then keep that compressed version on my primary photo editing drive in case I need to go back to it, but if I need to go back and totally re-do something i can go back to my backups and retrieve the original PSD with all the layers if I Need to. I do wish that Adobe would do away with the 2GB PSD limit though, as I find in some cases, I have to save as a TIFF if the file happens to exceed 2GB. Doesn't happen often as most of my files end up being 1GB or less (mainly if I'm doing HDR or exposure blending of high-res photos) but it would be nice because I think the PSD file format is a bit more efficient than TIFF.

A side solution to smaller working files; Apple is introducing _.heic_ as the new high quality small file size image format. Windows and Linux are slow to catch up as usual but I have been converting my libraries of images. I have found that saving to _.heic_ with compression set to _notch 4_ in *Apple Preview* offers near perfect images but with savings of up to 95% of the file size. The savings vary, it is best with large hi-res files, especially if there are large areas of flat or smooth colour, but they are all worth it. Especially as _.heic_ includes alpha channel transparency. Everything works faster with smaller file sizes and I have nearly doubled the storage on my backup disks. Apple's Finder lets me quickly preview and sort my files as it does with all media so I pretty well have much smaller files, readily viewed, at my finger tips. For the software that hasn't kept up, I just take the files back into Preview and convert them for use in an older format.
@PilgrimofOsiris3 жыл бұрын
That's nuts. Crazy cool. Trying to code a really small image file type myself. The heic is one of the most impressive I have ever heard of. Apple did a great job with it.
