100% - at the end of the day, we’re all just having fun flying toy airplanes. Never forget that. 🥲As we mentioned in the video, we all fit stereotypes to one degree or another, but it’s important not to paint everyone with the same brush. Don’t send any hate to the types of people we mentioned in this video because they’re the same as you and I. You never know when someone’s just having a bad day.

Right on. Back in the 70’s when I was learning to fly helicopters, the fixed wing Guys complained of us hogging the field. This was no gyro days and hard. Today the hovering airplanes hog the field and there’s difficulty trying to get a forward flight of anything in. I can relate. Great job. I’ve passed it on.

It almost feels like a versus community now airplane guys tend to dislike the heli group. It's kind of funny in a way I'll usually stay a day after an event just so I have more time to pack I'll hop out of my tent throw a pack in my heli just to get yelled at because the airplane guys decided he wanted to get out and fly when I waited so patiently. there's good and bad in both but like tail heavy said don't take it too seriously we're all here to have fun

As an ex state CFI for over 10 years in Australia, I have to say that no club member should ever shout at anyone else, in particular newcomers! Kindness, respect and offering advice when appropriate, improves the pilot in questions ability and confidence whereas an aggressive approach achieves nothing but negative results.

As a 19-year old who's been in the hobby for 14 years now; i could think of a person for every single type you've listed. The first thing i've learned is to listen and learn from those who also listen to you and ask for your oppinion. I've met plenty of older dudes thinking they're better pilots but didn't want to prove it to me after i've flown and show what i could do. Of course the hobby isn't about being the best but about having fun but shutting someone up purely by burning 1 pack feels great! Anyway, great video!

As someone who grew up in the hobby during the early 90s I can say that I have witnessed all the traits you describe. When I was doing things with a model aeroplane at the age of eight that most men in the club couldn’t do, you get a bit of negativity from them. Now I’m now in my 30s and still love flying. The key is fly safe and have fun, they’re big kid toys at the end of the day.

I used to belong to a club in the mid 90s in North Texas. There was a 14yo kid there who was truly gifted on the sticks. His dad said that he was flying solo at the age of 8 after just one lesson. He took to it like a duck to water. To this day, that kid is still the most gifted RC fixed with pilot I have ever seen. He could fly with such accuracy it was incredible. Everyone respected him greatly, and if he gave anyone at the field any advice, they always listened. Even the really old timers. When I first joined the club I showed up at the field one day with a brand new plane. It was my second plane. I could fly, but was still very green, and hadn't flown in a couple of years. He went over my plane and made a few minor adjustments, then maidened and trimmed it. Then he buddy boxed with me because I was nervous I would crash it. He gave me a lot of pointers and had me flying solo confidently by the end of the day. Good times...

An excellent analogy for the AMA club experience. Especially the FAA wannabes and the Club police. I have been building and flying since the 1960s and I avoided flying clubs for those exact reasons. Back then we had to worry about crossing frequencies and shooting each other down. It was always better to get a bunch of friends, find a big field, and try to chase each other around.

I'm glad I found these videos and comments. I'm new to the hobby of about 4 months now and there is a local RC club/field about 4 miles from where I live (very convenient) ....never knew it was there. I stopped by there one day during the week while out on a rip on the bike, met a couple guys that was there, and they gave me the low down on requirements etc....they seemed like good ole boys and I was thinking about joining....not so much now. I'll keep going to the 2 schools and the ballfield I found, I hit the ballfield during the week and the schools on the weekend while kids are gone and the place is huge, you could probably fit 6-7 football fields inside the flying area and now I met the guy with a farm next door that has 40 acres, he told me if I ever get run off at the school just come over to his farm and have at it. I don't do drama so them flying clubs can have it, I like the quiet, peaceful, being outdoors, sun on my face, fresh air, no mouth, nobody bitching, no rules, out of the house and watching the graceful flight of my plane against the sunset backdrop ALL BY MYSELF....well, unless my friend shows up. There's not too much flying going on when she gets there.

I’ve never flown club, mostly just parks or blasting around over my neighbors fields (they’re fine with it.) I will say I’m one of those guys who doesn’t strictly maintain line of sight and/or sometimes hop into general aviation airspace when no one is using it. Every time I look at the FAA website and see that I need to go through a whole new process to legally fly is the start of a bad day for me. Now that you’re thinking I’m probably flying 50 miles away and 10,000 feet I will say that I have a personal maximum of 800 that I rare like go to and I will try to maintain visual contact, mostly with my drones as those are screens, my planes are a different story because I can’t take my eyes off of what I’m doing and those are rigged to goggles. The only time I’ve flown in a club like setting is when the fite fest West happened and that’s the first time I’ve flown an airplane FPV and not ended my day with a crashed plane.

Haha! I really enjoyed this! I have been into all things RC for over 40yrs. I for sure have seen all of these stereotypes in various forms, and must admit, I have been guilty of some of this behavior myself. I have found that the majority of long time RC enthusiasts tend to be male, and most are quite intelligent people. Many are friendly and will go out of their way to help you if you need it. Donating parts, helping you glue and tape to get one more flight in, etc. But many also have big egos and can be very argumentative sometimes. As I have gotten older, I have been able to recognize some of my own negative traits in this regard, and really work hard to not be "that guy". I enjoy debating with intelligent people and learning from them when we have a difference of opinion, but if things start to get heated, I try to apologize and walk away. I have found that life is so much easier this way.

Great video mate, I live in EU and I have to say - as much as I despise putting labels on people - we met the same people YAY! But I have met someone who is more kind of a yeti and was not listed above , the DUCT TAPE guy. Those who try to fix a broken propeller with duct tape , yes , they're rare but do exist.

Had an experience while maidening a P-51 35cc Mustang. We had two fields and right angles to each other but one faced the Sun so after I got the plane in the air I turned 90° to face away from the sun. I was no longer standing directly in front of the flight station now, so the president of the club came over picked up the flight station and moved it in front of me. I told him I'll be landing shortly using the runway I took off from, would he come back and move the flight station back from me when I land. Now that's the kind of adherence to rules that would have made Henrich Himmler proud.

It's a hobby thing across the board. I used to fly models, helicopters and planes but I'm mainly models railways for 60 years. Don't touch, no you can't have a go etc etc. We built a small exhibition O gauge layout. Ok, things are expensive? A 10 year old showed so much interest we showed him the sections, left him with it and went down the pub for 2 hours. His Mum couldn't believe it. If you want there to be a local model shop in your town ... you have to encourage and engage the kids in your hobby. Outside with Dad doing something practical.

20 whole years in r/c lol I've been in the hobby since the 70s and never had issues with anyone everyone is helpful and great to talk too I feel bad wherever you fly the only guy I've seen at the clubs I've been in is the hotdog the guy who has all the top notch stuff and does nothing but stunting all day

Love the video, I can relate to at least 2 types of rc pilots. Beside of identifying myself or some folks with this descriptions I feel all rc pilots kind of cicle between all of this types (and I think that it could be more) Just have fun and enjoy the hobby.

Good video... I started out as the 3D guy, and fit that description pretty well! Lol, though I've since found myself transitioning into the scale flyer guy 'not represented here unfortunately'... in which there is no such thing as too much detail, even if it adds a tone of weight and makes the plane fly like crap... also, trying to match full-scale roll rates and turn radius characteristics in the model's scale.

Silver hair pilots !  I would say most of them are friendly, saved many of my planes on maidens (because for me, cg is an option), can do crazy fixes on the field, try to help as much as possible any curious youngster. But a few of them, are the worst thing in the hobby. And let’s talk about pattern flyers, they are so painful in my club they restricted them to a schedule.

What a great funny video as always guys! I am that passionate kid in the hobby and luckily I’ve never received ONE complaint from an older person about how/where I’m flying thank goodness. My neighbors love it when I fly! Well, there was only one instant where I was flying my UMX Ultrix at a soccer field and this guy said he was getting nervous because I was flying too closely. I apologized and moved over some but he STILL CONSTANTLY was watching my plane. 😂 That itty bitty Ultrix haha. I’ve got myself multiple times with it and had my finger in those prop blades at full throttle before. Yeah it might hurt for a second but definitely didn’t cut me open. A bigger plane, yes for sure it would! Definitely still gotta be careful but sometimes people take it too far! Thanks!

You nailed it! I was at a club field flying one time...all by myself; nary a sole at the field. I was flying aerobatics over the field when another club who was driving past the field stopped and then proceeded to tell me that I shouldn't be flying aerobatics over the field. Apparently, I was putting him in danger at his house.

I loved this video guys!! If I am honest with myself and other folks, I have fit into 1 or all of these categories in at one time or another during my close of 50 years of flying. Rubber band, CL...if it would fly, I had to have it. And now at 71 1/2 years old I find that I have changed a lot. Living in a small town in Alabama where the closest AMA field about an hour and a half away...... I find it's just my son and I looking for a safe place to fly. Our rules are simple. Don't endanger other people or property, don't hurt ourselves, don't annoy anyone in the area. Also if anyone, young or old, shows any interest in RC planes....encourage them no matter what the age. Not many folks in this town are into the hobby so be kind and courteous to all. If I fly a little lower than I use to, I'm not showing off....I just can't see as well as I use to! :) Slow is good, slower is even better and most of all.....Have fun, respect and love others. Makes you feel good! Thanks for taking me into my past, present and...Future?? :)

My club is super chill. We have fliers that come from many cities over that drive past at least two other clubs to get to ours. I'm one of the old nitro fliers that extol the virtues of internal combustion. Except for the starting problems, running problems, cleaning problems, vibration problems, radio interference problems, and expense they are great! Actually, I do sorta miss nitro - for two things, not having to wait to refuel and 20-minute flights. Oh, and having the same power throughout the entire flight. OK, so that is three things. Hmmm...and the sound. The sound is pretty cool...especially 4 strokes and multi-cylinders. Smoke systems too I suppose. Really dig smoke on when my gasser Pitts is doing a tumble. OK, OK...that's like five or six things that are better. Anyway...'Lectric is cool too...No oily mess, right?!?!
