My favorite is "Lite bakom flötet" which translates to "Slightly behind the fishing float" but is used to say that some one is not that smart, in a nicer way.

It's funny how different, and instantly recognizable, the Swedish-accented English is compared to the Norwegian-accented English. And same with Danish. Brits and Americans would probably be surprised to know that we can tell each other apart so easily by the way we speak English!

I love these. I understand the shrimp sandwich - it makes sense. Shrimp is expensive (pretty much everywhere in the world) so the logic works. :-D

Having traveled in Europe during my military career, I agree that some expressions and exclamations lose a lot in translation. These are very informative and interesting. I, for one, love to live the differences in cultures vicariously, as I don't travel anymore. Thank for sharing, Linn!

This was so fun and interesting! I really enjoyed it and makes me want to learn more and more and even more about Sweden and Norway. When talking or listening to anything that involves Sweden or Norway or Finland the whole thing sound like a really pretty fairytale .. maybe because the closest thing to it i grew up and enjoyed so much was the Moomins so it kinda connects to that .

I have to wonder if there is more then one way to say these weird sayings.. My favorite of these was the slide in on shrimp sandwich.. I never would accuse anyone of having a easy life... but I all too often under estimate how easy things will be.. So I guess my question is, would I be guilty of of thinking this would be as easy as sliding in on shrimp sandwich?

I suppose no matter what country you are in, there are sayings that may sound strange to others. I’m from Australia and we have one or many that other countries would find weird I’m sure. “Their a few tiles short of a roof”.

That could perhaps be what we in Sweden say that "Somebody hasn't all horses in the barn". Not the sharpest tool in the box. Somebody "har inte alls hästar i stallet", or "inte alla hästar hemma" = "not all horses at home".

I just love how languages do not sometimes translate lol. I live in South Africa and my mother tongue is Afrikaans (derived from Dutch but somehow sounds closer to Flemish) and it is a very expressive language as we seem to have an unique sense of humour. I just love the "not pure flour" and the "shrimp sandwich" one, somehow I know Afrikaans people would find it really funny. We have some expressions that just cannot be translated or described to carry across the true meaning as some of yours have been too, only Afrikaans people get it :-D

Shitting in it would be a breach of all the rules, both spoken and unspoken.

My father's ancestors were from Sweden and I'm told that our name "TACKLIND" means something. Can you tell me what it means?

David Tacklind: ’tack’ means ’thanks’ and ’lind’ is a ’linden’ tree. Put together to ’Tacklind’ it doesn’t mean anything really... Sorry... Lind is not unusual as a last name in Sweden, on it’s own or as a first or last part of a last name. Maybe, the person that told you might have confused it with ’tackling’, that means the same in english, ’tackling’. /Pia from Sweden
