On December 13th each year Sweden, and some other parts of the world, celebrate Santa Lucia, a Saint from almost two thousand years ago whose eyes were gouged out and then became a saint.

I loved your video. Thank you for sharing your tradition, sounds pretty amazing. I’ve seen videos of the ceremony celebrations but wondered if you have any specific videos you’d suggest to see the celebration

The reason she is celebrated in Sweden is because in the Middle Ages when Sweden was going through a great famine, she brought bread and wheat to the people of Sweden on a ship in the middle of the night. She was surrounded by light and saved people from starving to death. That's also why saffron buns (made from wheat) are eaten on her feast day.

I attended a Swedish Lutheran College where Santa Lucia was always a big celebration. But I never understood why a Sicilian girl was feted in Sweden. Thank you for clearing this up!

@@robertaswanson5633 no problem! The more I've read about this tradition, the more I've realized few people know about it's origins. Funny how things become a part of a culture without the story of it being passed on with it.

Because of this, your country should have the kids take the day off from school and the parents take the day off from work. It just sounds like a big enough reason to stay home.

Saint Lucia was born and raised in Siracusa, island of Sicily. Why she has become so popular among vikings, really I don't know. By the way the local name is not LuSia.

Ibland är det dessa vanliga traditioner som ger oss en koppling till andra runt oss, såväl som komfort. Sometimes it is these traditions that give us a connection to others around us as well as comfort. No, I am not Swedish I just tried a translater.

It was originally a pagan ceremony celebrating the winter solstice, the rebirth of the sun -- and hot chocolate

Well you can’t call it a pagan ceremony it’s syncretic a mix of Catholic and pagan orgins it’s stupid when people try to claim it as just Christian or just pagan

@7grains ofsalt the "only pray to Jesus and anything that remotely looks like praying to someone other than Jesus is WRONG WRONG WRONG"-type of Christianity is very recent. Ancient Christians have been asking for the intercession of the holy people that came before them through prayer (AKA the saints) for centuries. Granted, is not the same as asking for the saints to do things out of their own powers, it is implicitly assumed any effectiveness of prayer directed to them is produced by God, of which our only mediator is Jesus Christ. The saints were people extremely close to Christ in their hearts as evidenced by the lives they lead and their deeds. Finally, many of these celebrations are also claimed by each country's culture regardless of any religious origin, so oftentimes people celebrate this ancient Catholic feasts for fun and tradition and not religious reasons (because that is what they originally were, Catholic religious feasts that incorporated all those symbols, including former pagan ones as they had been endowed with a new Christian meaning.)
