Build 1000 space blimps with envelopes that can each contain 5 cubic kilometers of compressed atmosphere. Fill them with Venusian atmosphere and then use solar sails and the slingshot gravity trick to send these blimps to Mars for unloading. Then send them back. Make them fully automated. After perhaps a few decades, the atmosphere of Mars will get noticeably thicker while Venus may start to cool. You'd be terraforming two planets at once!

I had never heard any of this. I always felt the Mars colonization movement was impractical, an astronomical potential waste of money, and frankly foolish. But Venus sounds much more doable. Does Elon Musk know about this? Thanks Simon.

I sometimes feel a little sad that I was born in a period just before we make giant leaps forward. But I was extremely lucky to be born now and not as some peasant in medieval Europe, worked to death on some rich assholes farm and never travelling further than the next village which describes pretty much the last few thousand years of life in Scotland. When I travel by plane I really take for granted something that a few generations ago would have been beyond the wildest dreams of man. So I guess I'd take a colony on Venus for granted too once I'd been there once - "I hate working on Venus there's nothing to do" etc.

The atmosphere on Venus is so thick that, despite the g-force being similar to that of the earth, one of the effects would be to make it harder to move because the air is so thick. You would definitely be slowed by the added resistance, I think.

The variety of things we could build with just CO2, Nitrogen, Sulfuric acid and trace amounts of chlorine and fluorine is actually quite amazing. If we could just invent and drop some floating automated processing modules into the atmosphere it is possible that you would be able to fully build your colonies with the carbon and polymer building materials that they create. If we could just fully work out carbon-based electronics, and perfect some of the other processing and automation technologies, I don't see why such a floating colony couldn't be mostly sustainable.

Wouldn't we need an asteroid or two to build cloud cities on Venus? Also, how much is the atmosphere of Venus like the predictions for Earth under global warming? If the lizards had a civilization before us, they may have moved to Venus after dropping the asteroid on themselves, and then did that planet in with fuel that turned into carbon dioxide. Not sure what they were burning, since we're burning them.

So let me get this straight: worst case scenario we overpopulate and destroy the earth making it almost as horrible a place to live as...Venus or Mars. But Mars is too far away to be a workable first colony. Venus is closer and we could survive on Venus by using advance technology like floating cities and technologies for capturing solar energy and converting it into energy (electricity), food, and other useful resources-that would all be trillions of times more efficient and effective if we did similar projects on...Earth.

Instead of Mars/Venus, why he/we doesn't/don't make/ convert deserts into a habitable area, there is lots of surface there, many people can live there ( if there are the conditions). Big cloud project : You can make/produce a( thick harmless) giant cloud above Africa/ deserts ( covering it all), it can decreasing 30% of heat, or more . Thermos project : You can make giant thermos in deserts , building cities inside it , but filling its walls with air( not with vacuum),that is easier , important is to be the dark/ shadow between two walls of giant thermos, that is sufficient , is it not necessary to make vacuum inside the walls of thermos , but is sufficient be /set the dark/shadow between two walls of thermos, that is sufficient to create a cool area inside the thermos( without vacuum),( similar things ), so it is giant thermos almost( it is not exactly a thermos). Hole project : You can dig/ pierce make make a giant hole inside ( under of surface of deserts building many cities/neighborhoods inside it( like giant thermos inside it ) , it would be cool weather( normal temperature )there , ( under the surface) Floating islands( project) : You can choose/ find positions on ocean's surface which has normal temperature ( cool weather) and build floating islands there . There is a lot of surface there.

A Mars colony is a technological challenge. However, it will happen and the video's curt rejection of the possibilities does a disservice to the viewer. Venus for the foreseeable future will likely be the site for a floating research facility. For all the reasons mentioned it is technologically possible to do so but hardly economic or self supporting. Mars offers resources from Mar's surface, and easier excess to the asteroid belt and its own diminutive moons for additional materials. Mars can eventually became self supporting, economic and independent. Because of the extreme difficulty of getting to and operating on the Venusian surface most materials will have to be brought to the outpost. It would take centuries before a Venus colony could be economic and self supporting. In future centuries it may occur but I hardly would count on it.

Humans are rubbish. Space is excellent. I vote Venus.

That could be achieved in under a decade. Problem is the overlords will not stand for it unless they can remain in control.

There are many reasons Venus will make a better habitat than Mars for humankind, even with today's technology.

Also, ~100 genes in our immune system stop working in zero g. We don't know if 38% of 1 g is enough to keep it working. Or maybe it works 38% of normal... The problem with the immune system in 0 g has been compared to AIDs. What if COVID got loose with compromised immune systems.

This makes absolutely no sense....there's no way venus is a better candidate for colonization than mars..... 1. The gravity on mars isn't that much weaker than earth's. 2. We DO NOT posses the means to colonize either the atmosphere or surface of venus....however we do posses the tech needed to do so on mars. 3. The costs to keep colonists safe would be astronomical, pun intended...lol, much more than the cost to keep them safe on mars. 4. There's more potential to terraform mars and it's atmosphere all thanks to the ice that is there... 5. Closer doesn't equal better.... 6. There is absolutely no life on venues...the current "study" ignores many facts that disprove their findings.... I'm not going to bother busting the rest of these foolish "reasons" why venus is better than mars, cause they're just that foolish day dreams.....with just the slightest of knowledge on the subject one can see the foolishness behind it.

I read recently that the phosphene in Venus atmosphere is probably caused by the atmospheric composition itself and not by biological means. Also, the results of the paper that proposed life as the cause have not been replicated by other labs looking into it. Having said that, we really don't know much about the Venusian biosphere so it could still go either way.

Wonder if you could just use space elevators to simply pump the excess CO2 into space?

nope, gravity would pull it right back down to the planet. even if you did manage to get it to escape Venus, you are just dumping a lot of it into Earth's atmosphere.
