So you got a couple up your facts wrong green iguanas can get to be 7 foot I have a 7 foot male and I would never feed him a whole head of lettuce cuz first of all that's too big of a meal and when I feed its fruits and vegetables with it i always mix it up so he has different stuff every day anyway you did a good job with you rest of the facts i just wanted to let you know keep you the good videos

@@killapopper8835 Thank you for your feedback. I always refer to them getting 6’ because that is the common average, but like any species there will be individuals that end up being bigger and those who end up being smaller :) As for diets, those are discussed in more detail in my care guide and iguana nutrition video. This video was more so meant to dissuade people from buying them, as opposed to telling them how to care for them. As for greens, I guess it depends on where you shop, because my bunch of greens could easily be eaten in 1-2 days by an adult iguana, but if your bunch of greens is much larger than what I have access to, then It probably would take a couple days :)

Absolutely - this subject is super close to my heart and important to me to talk about because of the condition Arcadius was rehomed to me in. The people that had him didn’t mean to not provide for him correctly, and they thought they were caring for him right, but he ended up with severe MBD and honestly shouldn’t have survived what he went through with his injuries. I see this happen with iguanas too often - except unlike Arcadius, they don’t even up making it, so I try my hardest to really help people determine if an iguana is right for them before they make the purchase and commit.

I’ve had my Bobby boy for 4 years now, from hatchling- and he is the best decision I’ve ever made. The sweetest, calmest, most affectionate iguana I’ve ever seen. I agree they aren’t for everyone but they definitely don’t make “bad pets”. That’s all up to the caretaker.
@zareptiles
@zareptiles 4 жыл бұрын
It’s not all about them and their attitudes - this video covers any aspect of keeping an iguana that wouldn’t be ideal for the average person looking for a pet reptile. Arcadius is the sweetest boy ever, so I wouldn’t say he’s a bad pet, however due to the level of care they require and the potential for a bad attitude which could result in very dangerous situations if not prepared, I would consider them bad pets for most people. We just happened to be very fortunate that our iguanas are very sweet! :) This also isn’t the only video I have made on the subject - I followed up this video with “why iguanas make great pets for the right people”, because they do make very rewarding pets (for the right people)

I'm always cautious of buying reptiles in general now. Parents should be very careful when picking one out for their kid. My mom let me rehome a friend's gecko when I was in the 4th grade. The thing ended up living for 26-28+ years (age unknown)! Whatever their lifespan says, double it as a precaution.

Nice video. I actually don't own an iguana per-se, but I do live in the tropics and there is park with a creak close enough that wild iguanas come to the backyard all the time (actually my mom hated 'em 'cause they keep eating her bougainvilleas - they particularly likes the flowers 😆). There's this large male that is so used to see us that actually let some of us pet him (My gf named him Gaston - LOL). Also whenever eggs hatch you can see the little green things running all over the place some actually get in the house to hide from the birds (they hunt 'em down) and like you say they DO have personalities. Some of the littlest ones (about the size of my palm) will actually jump into your hand if you reach for 'em and some others actually hiss and others just don't care.

Very informative and a lot to consider! Before I invest in anything I always like to hear the bad and ugly before I admire the beauty. Realistically there are several points about Iguanas, which I learned from your video, that may make it difficult for me to take care of one... having said that, I believe there's a right pet for everyone, perhaps an Iguana just isn't on the table for me at the moment. Cheers! 🙂

Thank you so much for the great feedback! I love hearing that! This is why I made videos like this! I have heard about one of those potential problems on some Nature Program on Reptiles. Which is on the Lizards. Henry Lizard Lover said about the Male Iguanas. They’re raised alone & don’t see other Iguanas & will stalk & attack humans. But it was a good thing Henry Lizard Lover showed the demonstration when 1 Male Iguana sees another Male. But at least he held on to the mellowed one while the other was in its boundaries for a private moment. Sometimes I wish Iguanas would understand that we’re different from them. No doubt that some life like toy would let it be a minor comfort of its own kind. Especially if it’ll be convincing enough to not attack a human. But we might have to pretend that the toy or figure it struggling like the real thing wanting to fight & takeover the other’s area.

Would a Bearded Dragon be a better choice for a pet lizard? I remember back in the 90s everybody had an Iguana it was as common as having a dog or a cat. Ferrets and Macaw parrots I remember were another very common house pet in the 90s. Today not so much except maybe Ferrets I still see common once in a while.
@zareptiles
@zareptiles 4 жыл бұрын
Yes bearded dragons are much better! Their care is very similar to an iguanas but on a smaller scale, and you don’t have to worry about humidity! The only addition would be that Bearded dragons also eat insects where iguanas dont. They would need uvb, high heat, and salads like a bearded dragon, but a smaller enclosure, lower humidity, and they are much better with tolerating human interaction! Mean beardies are much less common than mean iguanas

Being a beardie owner brought me here. I think a beardie makes wonderful pets. They love to be held! The only bad thing is the live insects. I learned to get over that pretty quickly, but some of the insects are like a second pet. You have to house them properly, feed and give them water so your beardie gets healthy insects. Its kind of sad taking care of them then feeding them to your dragon lol. But my dragon is super chill and loves to hang out and he is even good with my 5 and 3 year old.

My big red iguana was like the iguana in the video but someone stole her because I kept her in a outside enclosure and someone used bolt cutters to cut the lock on the cage and I was so mad but I got 4 babies green iguanas that eat well . I also am keeping a ornate nile monitor which also needs a big enclosure.

I have a harness and leash for arcadius. I wouldn’t put him down outside without one because they can move quickly when they want to. There are different styles of leashes/harnesses, so you just have to find one to your liking :)

I just got a Blue Iguana a month ago. How do I tell if I got a male or female.
@zareptiles
@zareptiles 3 жыл бұрын
Males will have a broad head, typically a bump on their head, larger dewlap, and larger femoral pores under their legs. Females have a smaller dainty body shape in comparison and smaller or barely visible femoral pores. I suggest googling the difference so you can see images, because its very easy to tell :) However, its not easy until they have reached sexual maturity typically around 2 years of age. Before that they all look like females 😂

What is the minimum size for an adult iguna?(baby and adult)
@zareptiles
@zareptiles 3 жыл бұрын
Babies can be kept in smaller set ups, but they’ll out grow them very very quickly. You want a large enclosure ready to go by their first year. My views on minimums keep changing as Im in the hobby longer. Ultimately minimum i’d go 6-10’ long, 3-4’ deep, 6’ tall. It really depends on the size of your iguana. Arcadius is stunted so he doesnt need what a huge adult would need, some adults are bigger than others, but plan for alot of space :)

Ahh I see. I was wondering if you lived in Florida, because If it is an iguana, it is now illegal to own iguanas in Florida. You would have had to own it prior to July 1st I believe and would have to follow the new protocols and guidelines to have your animal grandfathered in to be able to legally keep it

About thirty years ago, I wanted an Iguana as a pet after someone brought one to a party. It looked really cool with it's lovely orange green colour and was really sweet and a little harness and lead set, I let it climb on my shoulder. I think it was a female. I started nagging mum to buy me one and she said let's go to the pet shop and ask about them first. We went in the shop, spoke to the assistant who showed us their Iguanas and all the equipment and care they actually needed. Naturally I decided not to buy one.

The 2nd time I bought a small book on iguana care and followed the book's instructions. The 3rd time I bought a larger book and followed its instructions. If you are pet sitting for your friend, did your friend give you instructions on what to do? If so follow their instructions. MBD is also very common to see in iguanas typically not given proper lighting and or diet. With all due respect, you cannot blame people on the internet for the choices you made, so if something happens that is between you and your friend and no one else. If they left you information on what to do, follow that. If not, it looks like you found my care guide👍 Also check out my iguana nutrition video and one of my first ever videos was feeding my iguana, so you get an understanding of their diet ☺️
