I made this video because I feel that it is important to talk about the bad parts of keeping snails as pets. And seeing as it's the time that people usually go get some of their own, why not discuss it now? The first con is longer than all the rest but please stick with at least that one. It's the biggest con to snail keeping

OKIDOKI GUYS! I have been getting lots of comments from people thinking I am against snail keeping. But if you watch the video then you'll see that that isn't the case. At all! I do encourage snails as pets but I also think its good to give the cons about pets. I plan on having a con video for every pet I own. I dont think that nobody should keep them. Obviously I keep them and I have care guides for them so you can learn yourself. I upload these so people can be even more informed and its not all painted up to have no flaws. I love snails and I love that you guys love snails 🐌💕

It's because your title sucks and makes snails seem like bad pets, and you don't really seem to know a lot about snails. 7 of 10 not to get snails are not even real issues. The gnats and mold are rough though for real, so that is one good warning
@ExploringExotics
@ExploringExotics 2 жыл бұрын
@@pajamapantsmonday6893 i also said in the video that these arent all my points and I dont see a lot of them as cons. But everyone is different. I asked groups and ended up with people saying their own cons. I added up the most common ones. Your experience isnt the same as everyone else's. Mine isnt either. I hate culling. But decided that the pros outweigh that for me. But i dont see mold or gnats as a problem but you do. Its not a list designed for specifically one person.

in the video you mentioned snails being social, this is actually a common myth! there isn’t anything proving snails require other snails. they cannot get lonely (they aren’t “advanced” enough to feel emotions) and the only thing i see is that they have more enrichment when it comes to getting food- but that’s it, and there are no negative impacts we have seen to keeping a snail on its own!

I watched this video 3 weeks ago when I found a snail and wanted to take care of them. I did understand why I had to kill the hunts and eggs if I didn’t want them to hatch. It was hard understanding because I felt like you were too “cold” because of the way you talked about it (the vibe you could say). Now I feel like I’m ready. No stupid questions here ☺ Mantle collapse is a condition where the snail starts to come out of the shell. There is no cure as far as I know. Also, if you are crushing the babies, do you freeze them before hand? And would that make them dead/unconscious like meal worms or crickets before you cook or in this case crush them so that they don't feel pain? I think that's something I might try if I ever am over burdened and my decollates can't keep up
@ExploringExotics
@ExploringExotics 2 жыл бұрын
So studies are showing that snails do not really feel pain like we do but they do feel stress. freezing living snails is extremely stressful and is considered inhumane. Eggs would not feel it which is why it is acceptable but live snails at any age should be crushed. it is easy to crush the smaller ones since they dont have very strong shells however if you do want to sedate them or you have a larger snail that needs euthanized, then you can give them a beer bath before hand. ofcourse if you crush try to make it a solid and quick one and done crush to avoid them experiencing the stress or potential pain

@ExploringExotics
@ExploringExotics 3 жыл бұрын
One good thing to remember is that snails have so many babys so that they have a higher survival rate. They arent all supposes to live, which is really sad. If you decide to take some in just be prepared for culling or anything like that. The snails outside may not have the best luck if there are pesticides in your garden. You can try relocating them as well :)

I have a question! So my boyfriend lives in the city and i found 3 giant garden snails by the road. I've never seen snails before so I got excited and I wanted to give them a better life so i was gunna take them home with me (i live in the country) i was gunna release them by a pond with tons of plants and soil. But I googled it and it says it's bad for the environment to release or relocate snails?? I didn't know that until after. the thing is I've only had them for 2 days is it still bad to release them to a better place? I didn't wanna fuck up the environment by relocating them so i just bought a whole tank and decided to keep them but then I realized they mass breed. i realized I might have to kill some. I can't do it I will not be able to kill any. I already have a whole set up I spent 40$. I don't really know what to do with them after realizing this information. my question is what if they do have babies what do I do?? because I refuse to kill any and I don't think I'm allowed to release them. hypothetically if I ever have to get rid of them what do I do without killing ?
@ExploringExotics
@ExploringExotics 2 жыл бұрын
If theyre a specie of garden snails they will usually cull themselves. With the healthy babies you can try rehoming. Just make it clear to whoever you are rehoming to that they may be runts and that you dont cull. Dont charge for this since it is unethical to sell runts. You can also find them as eggs and freeze or crush the eggs. They will not feel it as eggs

Hey, my garden snail had a white bulge on the right side of the head and when I touch it only my snail reacts and the bump stays in place and this happened after 2 of my snails mated. After my snails mated I saw a weird white thing on the lid of the enclosure (Nobody in my family knows anything about snails so I told you because I'm scared that my snail might have a parasite or disease.

Lmao that's actually the snail's sperm packet, your snails are fine. Basically the snail equivalent of a peepee is a solid barb of sperm that one snail spears into another, it sounds violent but that's just how they are 😂 Edit: also the weird white thing(s) might be eggs but typically they lay eggs underground

I've had 22 pet snails as a kid and they never laid eggs. Once I found something that looked like eggs but it wasn't. Maybe it was because of their species. I had so many different ones but since they can reproduce on their own idk why they never did xD

Hi there! I'm Ryan and I'm interested in buying an African Land snail but I'm allergic to soil of any kind, I was wondering if a fake grass carpet for reptiles would still be fine for them instead of soil? (I would keep it humid and spray it daily to keep a nice humidity in the enclosure).

My little sisters friend Got snail and she told her she didn't want them bc they were much work. And wonder if I could take them. I told my sister to tell her I could, but also tell her you shouldn't get that many animals in one go, it shouldn't be a habit to re home them just bc you got bored. except if you are running out of space or/and moving. She has many animals herself from what I know, I don't know what animals tho. But I understand, she is young and probably want an animal to hold more often. But it's never too young to take accountability for small animals.
