I first moved to Dubai from India in 1980 as a young, inexperienced graduate. My initial plan to be in Dubai was for just a couple of years but ended up spending 2 decades there. I moved to Canada 22 years ago and have been a proud Canadian citizen for over 18 years now. Here are seven more reasons not to move to UAE: 1) This is a true story - When I first went for my driving test in Dubai in 1980, the police guy (examiner) announced my name. Since I have a long, complicated Indian name, he mispronounced it because clearly he was not used to it. I didn't realize he was calling out my name until later and he was a bit irritated. I can never forget his words to me. He said "Ta'al kalb" (come here, dog)...and later he said "Kullu Hindi Haraami" (all Indians are thieves/cheaters). I am not saying every Emirati is like that, but no one (NO ONE) dares to talk like this in Canada. Please tell me honestly, if a UAE national calls you Kalb, Khanzeer or Himaar, what can you do? Absolutely nothing. That's the difference between UAE, all Middle East countries and Canada (a developed country). Here in Canada, everyone is equal, everyone is respected and there is dignity of labour. A construction worker, a taxi driver, an office supervisor, a CEO and our PM - all are treated equally, all join the queue to obtain something, all are given traffic violation tickets whereas in the UAE there are many sections in the society (UAE Nationals/Expatriates, Muslims/Non-Muslims, Indians/Pakistanis, Whites/Non-Whites, White Collared/Blue Collared etc) and Vaasta is above the Law. 2) Racism is ubiquitoes in UAE. They will openly say to you that since you are an Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan or a Filipino, you will be paid less than a white person. This is unheard of in Canada. If an employer says this to me, I can immediately go to the labour department and file a complaint or sue them. 3) The yelling of Azaan 5 times a day by a Muezzin on a loudspeakers gets to you. 5 times a day. For what? Saudi Arabia has finally put a stop to this nonsense. Loud, irritating Azaans was one of the reasons I had to move to Canada. Wherever you go, there are several mosques that have minarets with loudspeakers pointed at all directions. UAE is an Islamic country, agreed, but still so much noise pollution 5 times a day should not be allowed. 4) It is very difficult, complicated and cumbersome process to get justice in the UAE, especially if you are pitted against a UAE national. True story: in 1985 or 1986, one of my Hindu friends had a major altercation with a Pathan taxi driver. In a fit of rage, the Pathan spat on my friend. My friend lodged a police complaint and in eventually, the Pathan was acquitted and my friend paid a heavy fine because in front of the judge, the Pathan swore on Quran that he did not spit (and my poor Hindu friend could not swear on the Quran because he was a Kaafir). Such is the legal system in the UAE. A Muslim can easily win a case against a non-Muslim by swearing wrongly on Quran. 5) Unemployment benefits, Government pension plan and Old Age Security plan, free Healthcare, free schooling, free public libraries, free language learning, even free swimming lessons - these are the few things which every Canadian citizen and PR Holder has access to. In UAE, there's nothing free for an expatriate. A labourer, a carpenter, a taxi driver, a mason, a construction worker will never be able to afford all these these things in the UAE. Unlike Canada, there's a lot of disparity in the UAE society. You should see the dismal living standards of those poor construction labourers working 10 to 12 hours on buildings in 45 C~50 C temperatures, and not getting their salaries on time. They are in no position to protest because there are no labour unions in the UAE. The Arbab or the company can mistreat the poor people to their heart's content and there's nothing the labourers can do. You will never find such a thing in Canada because we have laws here and no one is above the law. Even the Prime Minister can be sued and brought to justice. Please answer honestly - will you ever even dare to think about suing a Sheikh? 6) Education: UAE is not a good place for kids' education. The school fees are exorbitant and the college/university tuition fees are even more exorbitant. There's is no value for a degree obtained from a UAE university, even though they have ties with some Australian or American university. 7) In UAE, everything seems to be fake and superficial. There's no mental peace. I have finally found mental peace in Canada. At the end of the day, that's what matter. Peace. Canada will exist and will keep flourishing even after 500 years, 1000 years. But once the petroleum is over, UAE and the entire Middle East countries will go back to the desert culture. Good luck in Dubai.
